To me Howard, Garvey and Nora all look pretty good. Much more natural, believable and attractive.
Again though, I really like the body language while talking

Howard isn't the most attractive thing either, and thanks to his voice, comes off as a bit of a dullard. He's pretty easy to write off as a cypher and non-entity to me. The thing is, I actually like Piper from what little we've seen of her. She has a good overall design and I like the way her voice and personality come across.
To me, the problem isn't Piper's design. It's her animation, specifically the lip flaps. Maybe it's just a lip synch issue in a video (if that's so I'd hope someone at Bethesda feels embarrassed), though the Vault-Tec guy's mouth also seemed weird to me. I hope it's just a trick of the video. She's infinitely more appealing than Garvey is to me. A stupid name does a lot to hold one back.
I was a little surprised she wasn't black. I think because people said she was wearing a red jacket, and the placeholder model that popped into my head was http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Red in Fallout 3.
Then he must be psychic, because he's a dullard before things go wrong.
He has a different tone in the intro, but yes, he's still nondescript. It could be that they don't want the PC to have too strong a personality so as to not clash with the type of character the player has envisioned. Commander Shepard was also like this.
Women can never seem to escape being rated based on their looks, over and above anything else they have done or are capable of doing. As we've seen with Bruce Jenner/Caitlyn even soon as a man has a six change op and becomes a woman he immediately becomes part of that circus.
On the plus side, in a Post Apoc world I expect that "talent" (especially without having access to "cheats" - makeup/hair/plastic surgery...even dentistry, imagine the horror!) would be very tradeable.
Either you dont know what a unibrow is, or you need new glasses No offense, thanks for the clip, never seen it before!
I'd argue that goes against the whole argument they had of including voiced protagonists: To hit the emotional story beats better than they did in Fallout 3, something they attributed to the lack of a voiced protagonist. If they want to hit those beats, the performances need to have emotion, character, and personality. If the people reading the lines have about as much personality as a text to speech app, why not just stick with text boxes?
That's what bugs me about this whole conversation. If you're talking about the animation being off, that's fair even if I don't think we have enough to judge yet, but that's know how OP phrased it. We immediately got a flock of people just calling her ugly. There are so many more interesting things we could be talking about - what her motivations are, what her related quests will be, how she'll be useful as a companion, the backdrop of Diamond City... instead we're criticizing her eyebrow maintenance. Really?
Not so bothered by her looks as I just am the poor graphical representation of something that is supposed to be a living woman. I hardly blame Piper for that. If done properly I think she would look fine.
Putting Jenner and circus in the same sentence is correct, but I never thought I should try to find that grandfather attractive. I'm sure he doesn't care what I think though.
Interesting when you find yourself in one of those moments that let you know what things are really about in the world.
There's a serious gap in their technology if they can make synthetic robot skin but have no facility for plastic surgery.
Ain't that the title of the thread you entered though? I'd understand if the thread was meant to be about Piper's character as a whole, but the title, "does piper looks a bit", is obviously referring to her appearance and not her motivations as a journalist.
>.>' It ain't like it doesn't cut both ways. I've seen both men and women judged by their appearances in nearly equal proportions out in the real world, but as far as non-mobile gaming is concerned: There are far more men than women and as such it's far more likely for it to seem one-sided.

On topic: After having looked through some of the other material we have been presented, I wouldn't say it's exclusive to Piper's character. It probably has something to do with the art style they used, but the characters do look unsettling if you pay enough attention.
Guessing that's where it's going to take us. I expect all our companions will have some kind of associated quest line.
She looks to be good in the sack.
Will be hitting.
Should I just keep my opinion to myself? Fine, I'll lighten up and admit her mouth is weirdly structured and her stupid gloves make her arms look like shipping cranes. I still find her pretty good-looking. Her appearance is pretty, but yes a bit rough, which matches her personality. She sounds either abrasive or fascinating, depending on which side you fall on. She's the kind of girl you could have a fistfight with and a nice cuddle afterwards. Not that I'm *ahem* committing to anything, there are still several unmentioned companions I'd like to check out. No, not like that. Well, not just like that.
Anyway, I think the highly-stylized art direction--the color/lighting and exaggerated movement--keeps Piper out of the uncanny valley, at least for me. I do think the character models look a little cartoony, but I have a feeling that's only because I'm watching the same snippets over and over. I think that once I'm fully immersed in the game and everyone looks like that, it will seem less out of place.
As far as associated quests, I'd put money on her trying to expose the corrupt leader of Diamond City: We can side with her and find the truth while introducing major instability into the town, or side with the establishment to get the benefits of the ruling class while beating down the voice of the people. Although I'm not sure how much we can oppose her - one thing I really like about Bioware is that they let you mess up some relationships irreversibly, and it'll be them or you. Earlier today I finished Dragon Age 2 and had to kill some of my friends for their convictions. Will companions turn on you if you betray them? I'm not sure what to expect, but clearly Bethesda is putting new importance on this facet of the game.
For those of us rp'ing blind characters...
"Public Occurrences"
That's the first thing I noticed too. Immediate playback of all those games I've played where conversation = "zoom in to mugshot mode.... everyone's back perfectly straight? OK, commence speech!"
I'm no serious voice acting critic, but the mo-cap body language makes it all feel so much more real.
That is the truth, I did? expect her to look different then in the video, though it's not the big of a deal to me, it just threw me a curve ball is all.
I don't get it... are you talking about pretending your character can't see? Or just criticizing the name?
Yeah just a fancy way of saying "if you ignore what you *see* for a couple seconds"....
Definitely criticizing the name. Not in the same spirit as the "OMG Beth svckz" threads. But it did make me cringe.
It appears my attempts at humor are nearly as bad as her Newspaper branding.
