Does Size Matter?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 7:37 am

The problem is that melian is saying the files are disappearing from the directory after there are so many files in there. It isn't supposed to happen and isn't a limitation of the filesystem.
Agreed, but it was indicated that the problem only occurred in Morrowind. Other file managers could correctly display the directory which, as they probably both use the same underlying API, indicates that it is an issue with how Morrowind caches the directory contents rather than an issue with the filesystem itself.

The files on your hd are just data associated with a name in the FAT (File Allocation Table) and directories are just a way of organizing those files and are stored away from the file names.

NTFS doesn't use a FAT it uses a Master File Table

Well some girls say size doesnt matter and its about how you use it.... oh wait, wrong forum

But you can't get to england in a row-boat.

However, this principle does apply to mods (and seems to be the consensus here). Acceptable sizes depend on the content and quality.

Edit: Oh, and here's the old list of compression ratios:
http://www.maximumcompression.com/data/summary_mf.php

Notice how far down both WinRAR and 7-zip are on the list. WinRAR does a decent job, and can do a pretty good job on code (programs and DLLs), as well as text. 7-zip, though, advertises itself as a great compression program, so much better than the others... It's not. The best formats are rare, so you would have to include a batch unextracter, but in the cases when you need to go beyond WinRAR-best, they're definitely worth checking out.

I'm sorry I guess melian is having both problems and files are disappearing from the directory and also files are not being recognized by Morrowind. It may be that both problems stem from the same thing but that would mean it isn't a problem with Morrowind since it doesn't delete files. It may also mean there is 2 seperate probems one where Morrowind can't read a directory with more then a certain amount of files. The other is that something is effecting the filesystem like a virus or a bad spot in the first bytes of the hd which would cause problems with the Master File Table.

PS. Sorry about mixing up NTFS with FAT.

The biggest gripe for me are "visual mods" with no screenshot included on i.e. its PES page. More often than not I just skip it altogether...

Edit: No need for screenshots in the actual mod; just link 'em :P

Reminds me of when I was packing http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=5066. I tried the (at the time) main compression tools available: RAR, ACE and ZIP. Surprisingly ACE gave me the best compression even though I was expecting RAR to be the best, 7ZIP wasn't that widely used in the community at the time.

Just wanted to say thanks to all who have participated in this poll so far - 75 votes is great as it gives a good idea of whether size matters

I've learnt screenshots are very important in helping players or mod collectors decide whether to download, having a clear description of what the mod does and providing other opportunites to learn about the mod such as WIP or videos are useful too

However many have said they prefer not to have the screenshots included in the mod if they are are available on line to look at - which seems reasonable

And while Ialso learnt that 7zip is not as good a compressor as I thought it was - I'm still glad its free :)

So thanks to everyone who took the time to post and add comments
