Does Skyrim look spectacular?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 1:03 pm

I highly doubt the graphics are even completed. It looked fantastic in the trailer. I can't wait to see it on uber high everything on my comp

AND the trailer was taken on the 360.

I dunno guys. The clothing looks sharp.

Just kidding. I vote yes. Skyrim looks beautiful

Now, when I was a girl "sharp" meant "cool" ...

I should have been more clear. I'm asking if you like Skyrim's graphics or not.

Looks pretty amazing to me. I'm not a huge graphics person, so if a game is pretty much on par with the other games around the same time, I'm perfectly fine with it.

My thoughts. It looks so spiffy in fact, that I'm probably going to have to build a new computer to enjoy it. Happens.

Well when I saw the Skyrim trailer I was amazed and I could not believe it was gameplay and being run on a 360.

Artistically, it looks great. I love the art style and the color palette of the world. However, what footage I've seen is not particularly technically impressive.

http://www.skyrimportal.com/media/blogs/skyrim/skyrim03.jpg, that'd be great, but http://myclone.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/justcause2-freecam.jpg http://www.lolcanosaurus.com/temp/JustCause2%202011-03-22%2002-59-18-18_shadows_high.png.

I think people will be more impressed with what you can do in the game, rather than with what it looks like.

Id say they listened to the userbase and went with a tweaked engine, and emphasized more on the gameplay. (most likely). Something I can recall reading again and again, is that people did not care for cutting edge graphics, rather, they wanted better RP and gameplay elements.

Whoa, voted before I read the first post.
Graphically, yeahs its pretty good, but there are better games for graphics; Crysis, Far Cry 2, Metro 2033, and Call of Pripyat(now that COP Complete is out).
I thought you meant as a whole.

Please tell me you're joking? Seriously, Call of Pripyat!?! The game isn't really that impressive in terms of any graphical features, especially for this generation. Even compared to the Creation Engine it doesn't look that great.

All the bickering about a bunch of examples of games that all look fantastic has me convinced that this generation of gamers is absolutely entirely spoiled by the outstanding quality of graphics in games over the last decade.

Those "Just Cause" examples are actually unfair by the perspective too. If you notice in all three examples the Skyrim one shows a long view into a forest while in the Just Cause examples the near ground takes up a majority of the screen. In Skyrim the near detail is very impressive too. It's when you look into the distance that the level of detail drops. This is true if you look in those Just Cause screens too, but they are basically staring at the ground so you see all the detail near the character, whereas that near detail isn't shown as much in the Skyrim shot.

We've seen next to nothing as far as gameplay goes, a 2 minute long trailer with filler footage, and a few screenshots.
I really don't think any of you can justly make a judgment on how Skyrim looks when we still haven't seen it yet.

The lighting is second to none, with the possible exception of Crysis - but that's not used anywhere near as well. The modding community has also provided all the high detail textures you could ever want.

All the bickering about a bunch of examples of games that all look fantastic has me convinced that this generation of gamers is absolutely entirely spoiled by the outstanding quality of graphics in games over the last decade.

I hardly think http://screenshot.xfire.com/s/94724841-4.jpg has http://funingames.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/JustCause2.jpg in the distance. The comparison, to me, is quite fair, they're both open world games with seamless travel.

I also think that people wanting graphics up to modern standards is hardly "bickering" from "entire spoiled" gamers. There's a huge gap between wanting and needing - I think most of us fall into the former more than the latter, and why *shouldn't* we want more? We certainly have http://img.techpowerup.org/100406/JustCause2_Game%202010-04-06%2012-19-37-83.jpg to do so. Is wanting a better experience really so bad? I love games from animal crossing, to crysis, to elite, to nethack, to half life, to oblivion, and many more - but a good art style and good technology are not mutually exclusive, and compliment each other. To actively want /worse/ graphics, as if that could somehow make the game better, is madness itself.

I honestly don't think those Just Cause screenshots were all that spectacular compared to Skyrim, including your second shots. They certainly don't look bad mind you, in fact they look great to me, but the level of detail tricks are obvious.

The only glaring thing that stood out to me about Skyrim was the infamous animated texture stream.

Things in the distance tend to lose detail to the viewer, so that would actually be realistic. Also, they tend to look more blue as you're looking through more of the Earth's atmosphere the further out you look, which Just Cause captures pretty well, as does Skyrim actually. So, I don't mind if a game loses detail in the distance, as long as it's not jarring and looks natural.

I also find it strange that people are using examples from games that simply have a much smaller scale to work with which would naturally allow the developers more freedom to push the visuals. Skyrim is huge, and from examples of games of it's type that I've played or seen, it's the best I've seen (going only by the trailer obviously).
