Does the DOVAHKIIN have to be human?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 4:33 pm

I was just a little concerned that I wont be able to play elves or orcs since the story revolves around the human heavy province of skyrim. Its not a really big deal but I am not sure because im not sure if being dragonborn is based on being of that "clan" or by your actions. I.E. Do I earn the title or am i born with it, as a human.. Limiting me. Which I dont like in TES

Of course not. Any of the 10 races can be dovahkiin.

No. It's confirmed that we will be able to choose from all the previous 10 races.

Also, there is no reason why only a human could be a Dragonborn. In fact there is some evidence that the Nerevarine was Dragonborn if I recall correctly. Even if I'm remembering that wrong it is just like the past games in the sense of anyone can be the main hero. Any race, any gender.

Yes, and the nerevarine could only be a dunmer in an area that's heavily dominated by dunmer

Well, while were on subject, the last three Dovahkin (Alessia,Reman, and Tiber) were all Nord/Imperial. So, it really wouldn't mak much sense if you were any other race. Unless Tiber Septim got a little frisky with another race while his wife wasn't looking.

Tiber may have been a breton, or a nord! No body knows..but really, $10 says he was a nord.

Also, Tiber got frisky with lots of women. He even got Barenziah preggers, to his displeasure. Hell, lots of emperors had lots of friends with benefits. Even then, I doubt that being the dragonborn is hereditary.

what...
Playing whatever you want is the very base of TES. I don't even get how you came out to that concern... Of course you'll be able to play any race.
And yes, you are born Dovakhiin. That doesn't mean you have to be human.
So, no worries bro, everything's fine =]

Dragonborn had nothing to do with blood.

Talos was from Atmora.

Nerevarine was also dragonborn.

There is evidence to suggest that Mankar Camoran was a dragonborn. He could wear the Amulet of Kings after all.

No, you can be any race at all. The Dragonborn has nothing to do with bloodlines or anything of the sort. Anybody can be Dovahkiin, that is 100% confirmed!

It wouldn't be TES if you had to be a human!

It was said somewhere that it wasn't only the Imperial bloodline who was considered dragonborn.

Everybody and their descendants who made a pact with Akatosh, are called dragonborn.

Really? I thought he was a reincarnation of a semi - divine Dark Elf?

It is and it isn't at the same time. Todd says in the Skyrim issue of GI that the Septim line were Dragonborn, and that they were the last, but he also says it in a way of you are certainly not related to them. AND, he says that Dragonborn are appointed by the gods. (doesn't specify which. I assume some in the Nordic Pantheon, cause I don't see akatosh/alduin appointing a dragonborn to stop him)
So, my assumption is after you have become Dragonborn, your descendants will be as well.

In short; you don't have to be a human race to be Dragonborn, and it is hereditary but that is not the only way to become Dragonborn.

This has been mentioned by somebody before, but I do not recall learning this in Morrowind or anything. Can you provide a source?

It was mentioned by me in this very thread :P We didn't learn this news until after Skryim was released. I'll have to go look through all the updates/info we've had so far to find it... So it may take may a bit.

The Lost Prophecy

From seventh sign of eleventh generation,
Neither Hound nor Guar, nor Seed nor Harrow,
But Dragon-born and far-star-marked,
Outlander Incarnate beneath Red Mountain,
Blessed Guest counters seven curses,
Star-blessed hand wields thrice-cursed blade,
To reap the harvest of the unmourned house.

Well, damn. We did know about it in Morrowind. Thank you for posting this (saved me a lot of searching for when it was referenced in the newer news)

Well, on my first playthrough I'll be doing what I like to call the 'Cliched Playthrough' where I play it in the way thats most likely and fits the story the best. I'm not saying the Cliched Playthrough is the right way, but just the way I percieve the story if it were a book.

So, my first playthrough will be as a Male Nord prefering the sword shield and axe =)
