Does the split in the Fallout fanbase bother you? part 2

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 12:54 pm

The Fallout fanbase is one of the most divided fanbases out there. When Fallout 3 was released, millions of people who had never played the originals were added into the fanbase, and a very clear split was formed. When New Vegas was released, the split got even worse, as most fans of the old games liked it, most fans of the exploration and atmosphere in Fallout 3 didn't like it, and even more people who were new to the series came into the fanbase. With the split worse than ever, I'm curious, does it bother any of you at all? Or do you not really mind being part of a fanbase which such differing views? Personally, I think being a Fallout fan is just plain unpleasant. We don't have true discussions, we have arguments, or discussions that will eventually devolve into arguments, and there's almost nothing we can all completely agree about enough to have fun discussing it. If I were to get into a discussion with an Elder Scrolls fan, even if I liked one game and the other person didn't, we could still have an enjoyable discussion of the series as a whole. That's not possible in this fanbase, it seemingly always ends up as an argument over the other person's preferences.

If people would respect eachother and the history of the series, i wouldnt mind, but too many people want to make fallout like TES, which is not what fallout should become.

Doesn't bother me, 'cause the split in the "Fallout fanbase" is a fiction. The split is between Fallout fans and Bethesda fans.

I'll say this, i don't care...the only reason even know about this series is because of fallout 3, i barely forced my self to play the first two, the story is probably why i did. i'm not real big on isometric games. and ya the plot was cooler in the first game. But the actual game wasn't that fun to me. Oh well as long as they keep making fun games i don't really care too much about the fanbase or any splits in it

you could say there is a split in the elder scrolls fanbase between morrowind and oblivion

Dragon ages engine would be perfect for fallout god I wish bioware own the rights to fallout the we will get a dynamic dialogue system which therefore it will be fun to actually play a diplomatic character like I did in fallout 1.

I share most of this point of view., but won't usually take the side of the older fans, because of the general atitude i find with most.

One thing I hate is how Beth fans (I am one) want Fallout to be a exploration sandbox shoot em up! No! Fallout is not like that!

All I [censored] ask is that Bethesda stays true to the older Fallouts.

But bethesda makes the game now, and making exploration games is there specialty. I would say that the new games will all be first person explorations, they sell really good...so they will probably keep getting made

On a side note did you think that obsidian made a good fallout game? I mean the plot was kinda cool...and supposedly the devs were people who used to work on the old games

nv was really good, better than fallout 3 in just about every way, except the exploration. Fallout 3 just had more places to explore, i think this is bethesda's talent, while obsidian's is creating well written plots and charcters, if only they could combine teh two like voltron lol

Doesn't bother me in the least, would be an exceedingly dull world if we all agreed on everything.

At your first point,

I agree. But does that mean that we should pretend that FO1 and 2 never happened? What I am asking for, and many other FO1 and 2 fans are asking for, is a compromise. Former Black Isle people make the towns, factions, and story, and Bethesda makes the world. That would be the best Fallout game ever :D

Second point.

Yes, I think they made a great Fallout game. Obsidian is comprised of many Black Isle ex staff.

@ Reaper,

Could you please give me evidence kind sir?

i wouldn't mind a old school fallout game, probably not something i'd like but there appears to be a market for that kind of game, especially with some of the really die hard fans there are.

If by "Stay true to the old games" you mean "Go back to the fixed, overhead camera perspective from the old games" then I got some bad news for you lot...

I also object to the whole "If you like the last two games, you're not a fan of Fallout" thing.

Boy I love it when they don't listen.

Have you not listened to us? We are talking about lore, world building, and design style. As we have said a million times over, isometric would be nice BUT IT IS NOT NECESSARY. Why else do we keep saying that NV is a better Fallout game than Fallout 3 was?

I also object to the whole "If you like the last two games, you're not a fan of Fallout" thing.

That is NOT what we are saying. You are putting words in our mouths, and quite frankly it's getting pretty damn annoying. We SAID that a person who has played ONE or TWO games out of the entire series is in no position to say what constitutes a "good Fallout". I have only played FFVII out of the entire FF franchise, am I in any position to say what constitutes a good FF? NO! I have only played Morrowind and Oblivion out of the entire TES series, am I in any position what constitutes a good TES? NO! I have played EVERY game in the Fallout Series, and beaten every one of them, am I in any position to say what constitutes a good Fallout? YES!

So if they announced tomorrow that the next Fallout game was going to be a dating sim or racing game you wouldn't have a problem so long as they kept all the lore and world building and whatnot in the game?

That is NOT what we are saying.

So what you're saying is, I'm not a Fallout fan and cannot have any opinions about the series unless I've played and beaten all the previous games?

If they stick with the Lore AND the Genre

You are putting words in our mouths

Words that we never said

And we will never say
