I've always tried to get a muffle enchantment before embarking on the quest every time I start a new game, so I could sneak past the Falmer. However, I recently learned that I could obtain a power while on the 7,000 steps up to High Hrothgar. It lasts for 24 real-time hours and causes animals to not attack. Although testing revealed that it will break if I attack an animal, that's no problem if all I want to do is walk past the falmer.
But... DOES it work on Falmer? After all, they are considered "animals" for the sake of soul-trapping, illusion spells, and dead thrall, so are they considered "animals" for the sake of this power?
If it does, this could make Alftand much easier than it used to be.
