Does my username say '14 year old to you?'

Post » Tue Oct 05, 2010 4:11 pm

Based on my examinations of popular culture, I have determined that the name "xXSn00kiBieberRoflGagaXx" would terminally irritate prospective mod users, for perhaps 3 years at least.

It does seem a little juvenile, but I've seen some really strange usernames, so I'm sort of like "eh, whatever." I think it's the numbers at the end. When I see numbers at the end, it makes me think there must be, say, 94 other "Gunmaster"s on the internet. Like clone #66, etc. As for "gunmaster", I suppose I could interpret it as a move to be "gangsta" - I don't think guns are a weapon that should be taken lightly and I don't quite understand the appeal of choosing a username based on it. But, I tend not to try to read too much into people's username choices, since the possible reasons behind the choice are more varied than I could try to imagine.

Wouldn't affect my decision to download a mod. I pay more attention to mod quality than the online username chosen by the mod author. Unless the username was particularly offensive, vulgar, in bad taste, etc.

How come all your posts make me laugh for like 5 minutes? Do you sit and think of a way to make your posts into jokes or something?

Ok let me explain this... Recently, many many people have pointed out that my username, Gunmaster95, seems childish and they are always like, 'oh hey are you like 12?' or something. Now, I am only 17 (in 5 days) and I did make up the name when I was like 12, but is it really that strong of a vibe? The reason this is so important is that I have started making mods for Fallout 3/NV and will make them for Skyrim, and this is the name I was planning on going by. The only issue is, I don't want people to look at my mod, then see the name and go, 'oh its some dumb little kid' and then not play it. Does this name really eminate that I'm a 'little kid' (which I'm not anymore...) or am I just worrying too much about a stupid thing? I feel stupid even asking this here, but I have to have some input.

Thanks for your input on such a random thing...

Gunmaster95

I think you could be reading a little too much into it. Let your modding speak for itself.

The name seems kind of childish, and it'd give me pause for maybe a second or two on the mod, though it would entirely depend on how good the description of the mod is. If I see 13 year old kid typing then yeah I'll just skip over it. But if I see sentences, punctuation and *gasp* capitalisation, then yeah I'll be fair to it and give it a chance to prove itself.

Someone that estimates the quality of a mod based upon the designer's user name is childish. Just put out quality mods and word will get around.

Since I frequent a popular gun forum, the username "GunMaster" doesn't strike me as that immature.

This is true... Luckily my OCD makes me type everything like perfectly. I rarely miss punctuation or capitolization.

Hahaha. :P

I really hope so. I would LOVE to become one of those 'household names' like SureAI, Martigen, or the FOOK team. The only issue is rarely (except SureAI because they are that awesome) do quest mod makers get too popular. It's only the overhaul type's that get that.

You forgot TimeSlip, who is a badass of the highest caliber. And I'm not just talking about what he has done for Fallout and TES.

Ahh of course, he has done many a great things. I would love to be even 1/100th as well known as him.

You've said you aspire to work for Bethesda. While being as popular as those household names would be a great advantage, what really matters is what's in your portfolio on the day you show it to a Bethesda rep. Don't worry about becoming popular amongst the fanbase for your mods, what you need to focus on is making quests on par with what a quest designer at Bethesda can make.

Some of my favourite mods are made by people with awkward names. Plangkye, LDones, The Mad God, Mandamus, Sandman101, all have ass-backward names and really great mods.

Apparently I have one of Princess Stomper's mods as well. One I never remember installing. :o

While I don't judge you by it, yes, it kind of seems like something a 12 year old would pick.

Not trying to make a hit at you here but his name seems like something I'd expect to see from someone older than which I'd expect to see yours from. :hehe:

Just go with Firearm Emperor, gotta update that stuff as you age.

next will be Munitions Overloard
then Plasma-Bazokawesome (at this point you will have to be senile and you will be reverting to your childhood anyway)

But you cannot have one without the other. If I didn't make fantastic things, I would gain no rep other than 'that guy who makes crappy stuff'. I'm a complete stickler when it comes to playing games, I point out and harp on every little issue. So that allows my mods to be top notch, because I fix all the little issues. (Not including my first mod :P)

There's no harm in using the pressure of releasing a mod to the masses to motivate you to make it as good as possible. But what I'm saying is that you don't also have to worry about becoming super duper hyper popular in the modding community, because you don't need to be in order to impress Bethesda. As long as you're making quality mods, it doesn't matter if nobody plays them or if you don't even release them, what matters is that when Bethesda sees them they will be good enough to get you a job.

I'm pretty sure I didn't mention anywhere that my name doesn't look like it was picked by an 8 year old.
What's your point?

I dunno about you Americans, but over here the number 95 at the end of your nickname usually denotes that you were born in 1995, which basically makes you a kid.

When I was 12 my internet monikers were all misspelled variations of the names of Lord of the Rings characters.

The name tells me it has been created when you were a child. Not that you are a child right now.
As others already pointed out, names often get created at young age, and stick with you.
My name has been with me 9 years I think. Created in the first class of highschool.

Pretty much this, I wish I could get a new name for here, but I do still like it a bit, minus the "xXx" . Also it is not in reference to the cliche Grim Reaper it is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Grim_Adventures_of_Billy_%26_Mandy one of my favorite childhood cartoons, the connection to the urban legend grim reaper never dawned on me till after I had created it :sadvaultboy:

.. I should probably put my avatar back up to clarify this :P
Hopefully it worked.

EDIT: Also, sorry, forgot , but if someone doesn't download one of your mods because of your forum name, that is a pretty shallow move. Just post lots of nice pictures, and a amazing description of it, and I think those select few who download based on a forum name will be pleasantly surprised and rethink their decision

I don't judge people by their names - hell, I barely ever read people's names. I either see an avatar I recognize, or I judge people based on how they type (i.e: h0p3fu11y n0t liek th1s) and how logical/intelligent what they're saying is.

Not at all. After all, you have '95' at the end of your username, so I assume you're 16.
