Does my username say '14 year old to you?'

Post » Tue Oct 05, 2010 4:46 am

Ok let me explain this... Recently, many many people have pointed out that my username, Gunmaster95, seems childish and they are always like, 'oh hey are you like 12?' or something. Now, I am only 17 (in 5 days) and I did make up the name when I was like 12, but is it really that strong of a vibe? The reason this is so important is that I have started making mods for Fallout 3/NV and will make them for Skyrim, and this is the name I was planning on going by. The only issue is, I don't want people to look at my mod, then see the name and go, 'oh its some dumb little kid' and then not play it. Does this name really eminate that I'm a 'little kid' (which I'm not anymore...) or am I just worrying too much about a stupid thing? I feel stupid even asking this here, but I have to have some input.

Thanks for your input on such a random thing...

I did not get that impression personally. And my choice of a mod would not be based on the person's name.

It wouldn't affect my decision but it does contain several indicators that people use when guessing age i.e. numbers, weapons, something alluding to how awesome you are... All you really need at a few X's for decoration :P

I was thinking. Some of you have said username doesn't affect your decision to play a mod. I guess this could be good, because then only mature people who don't care about it would play, which is my 'target audience' anywho... Hmmm.

If it's bothering you, why don't you just switch to a different online handle?

If others are going to judge your work from your user name then it is their problem, they should be judging the quality of your work. Whilst you could register with another user name you will of course loose your post count - then are you going to be concerned about people judging you because you are seemingly new?

I have already released 2 mods under this username so I have my very starting 'reputation' under it. I would rather not change it. :/

No, I was born in '94. I'm not sure why I picked 95... I think it's because my computer at the time was a Windows 95, and it sounded cool to me. >.>

I have added another question to the poll to see if what you think about it would affect your decision to try a mod. I guess all this focus on myself kinda makes me seem young too... :P

Depends on what the mod does, usually I go to Nexus and ignore the name and read the description, I usually never go try someone's mod out just because they advertise it in a forum.

I just search for what I want, which is usually user made quest lines, new crafting items, or whatever. But this is from experience from Oblivion, fallout mods. If your mod is wonderful I may see what else you have created. Only remembering your name if you have good mods.

It appears you guys are mature enough to not care overall. I don't know why I ever doubted you guys. Thanks for the input!

A bit. I wouldn't change my choice of mod based on a name, though.

It's the internet. Usernames are supposed to be ridiculous and stupid. I'd probably be less inclined to download your mod if your username was "BillSmith" or something because it shows a lack of imagination.

I feel that I have the same problem with my username, since I made mine when I was 12, too. I just hope that people judge me based on what I post, rather than look at my name.

It does kind of say "teenage male" to me (you know, focus on guns and all that), but then again it could be young advlt so I wouldn't definitely side with "yes". Wouldn't affect my decision to download a mod, though, I have other criteria for that and rarely look at the user name of the person who made it anyway. :)

It does sound a bit childish, but it is nowhere near as bad as some of the names on the forum. My username was created when Halo first came up in 2001, so most people realize that just because a username is childish that does not mean it is a 13 year old usin' it.

I would not ignore one of your mods based on your username, but I would be less likely to click on a topic created by "Gunmaster95".

I voted sort of. The thing is, it doesn't really matter. Your name could be "PoopyMcBumface", and if you still made logical posts and good mods, it's not going to matter.
