Does Whiterun look really small in that screen to anyone els

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 4:03 am

Anyone else disappointed in the apparent size of Whiterun in the screen? It's supposed to be one of the five "massive/major" cities, but doesn't look any bigger than most of the cities in Oblivion from that shot. I sure hope there is at least another 60% of the city that we can't see in that original shot.

Yes. Now, I must simply hope that the towns are substantial and other cities more impressive.

The new official Playstation Magazine screens. I'm not allowed to post them here. One of them is a view of a character in third person view looking off into the distance at the city of Whiterun.

While it certainly does not look massive to me- unless you mean massive parish - i'd say you're right. There's a
massive chance a large portion of Whiterun is not visible there.

Yes, it does look small to me. But there's no surprise really, I did expect this since the map is almost as big as Oblivion's (small imo).

Even if the size of Whiterun isn't substantially bigger than Oblivion's towns by the looks of things, it is about how big it "feels". Think about how massive Vivec was but there was probably more to see in Bruma in terms of intricacies and uniqueness.

I'm sure there's another wing of the city off to the right, or trailing down a hillside behind what we can already see. Also consider that the cities will probably be far more like actual medieval cities, with narrow streets and more densely-packed buildings. Hopefully.

Is Whiterun supposed to be the biggest city? It does look a bit small but in reality it could be quite big, with a lot of stairs, basemants, tunnels and [censored]. The scale of the world can also be tweaked by how tall buildings are or how fast the character moves. It doesn't bother me if the cities are about as big as IC from Oblivion, what bothers me is those ugly walls that prevent my assassin from fleeing cities in an elegant manner.

Area-wise it looks about the same as Chorrol or so. But it looks a lot more densely packed inside. I also see some surrounding structures outside the city walls; something we saw very little of in Oblivion. In Oblivion, I think there were stables, a few quest-related buildings, and that was it.

the number of buildings visible seems roughly equal to the number of buildings in any given city in Oblivion, but they're packed much closer together than cities in Oblivion and it's exceedingly likely that there's even more buildings obscured by the buildings we can see, plus the walls, plus the hills.

plus, that's just the city proper. the roof of one building is visible just in front of the player in that shot, so it stands to reason there's more buildings out of the shot.

You can barely see half of it and there seems to be other houses outside the city's walls.

Looks fairly big to me - certainly bigger than Oblivion's cities.

I just think the screenshot isn't particularly flattering when it comes to size. Just wait until your character is standing right next to it's outer walls, then walk around it. It'll seem big.

When you look over the right shoulder of the person.... I -think- you have a part of the city at the very back... but i think it's something else

BTW... I see now that on the left.. On that lonely hill.. there's this huge building..... or a odly shaped mountain

I had that impression, too.If that's the case, the city is really, really big.

To those saying there's more further back, I don't think that's the case. If you look at this map http://www.thedragonborn.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/skyrimmap.jpg you can see the shape of the city (centre) and have a look at the paths going around it. You can see the path leading to it from the South in the map fits the path leading to the city in the screen, so we're viwing from the South. The Castle is at the edge of the city in the concept art image, and also it wouldn't make much sense to have a castle facing towards one half of the city and totally away from another, especially if it's built like a huge house as it is.
