G.E.C.K. Doesn't Work?

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 4:35 am

Okay so I have recently installed the GECK for my Fallout 3. I have my Fallout installed directly to the C: drive instead of program files to eliminate some extra steps in creating a mod, GECK is installed in same location. I also have the latest update for both Fallout 3 and GECK. But my problem is, when I load up the GECK and try to load the master file it starts to load all of the files, but when it gets to 42% it freezes and the window says (Not Responding). Anyone know how to fix this? And by the way, if you're wondering what my system specs are, you're going to have to tell me how to find those because I don't know where they are.

It always says not responding at about 42% ... you just need to wait longer. It will finally load eveything and you should see the window flash/ or reset for a moment ... but then you are ready to go.

In order to make the geck faster , try the same method mentioned here for enableing fallout 3 to use more than 2gb with process explorer.

I think gopher mentions it early in this vid , so you shouldnt have to watch the whole thing ... But just like he does with "Fallout.exe" do the same with the "Geck.exe"

Yeah as mktavish says, just wait it always does this. Especially when closing, it always says this program has stopped responding forcing you to force quit it. But it doesnt effect the work you do on your plugins so you need not worry.

And just to clarify ... the message that it is not responding upon loading a file ... is at the top of the browser (not a pop up) normal operation , a pop up at this point would not be.

But when you close it ... you will get a pop up window saying it is not responding (just disregaurd this one and click OK)

Howdy Sam ... what are you doing up so early ... or what am I doing up so late ?

Don't worry about it. It is working, it's just doing some things in the background so that it looks likes it's locked up. Give it a few more minutes and it will load up. I presume you're using either Windows 7 or 8? In XP that "Not Responding" message doesn't show up, the GECK just pauses for a short while. For some reason Windows 7 gets confused and thinks it's no longer doing anything, even though it is.

Yes, I tried getting the New Vegas GECK to be able to use more memory and it made a big difference. It seems to be more stable now as well. I suspect it would perform even better if I had just a bit more RAM to spare, but I only have 4 gig total, and Windows 7 is using almost a gig of that.
