DoF and SSAO stopped working

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 2:15 pm

They were working fine, then I went to tweak some stuff in MGE to improve FPS. I lowered the minimum view distance and experimentally disabled "Supply shaders with depth info" and "Update shader variable". I wasn't surprised to find my shaders were broken, so I went back and re-enabled those options, but they still don't work. Of my active shaders:

kns_SSAO_v09
knx_DoF_v12
trueBloom_g6_3

Only trueBloom seems to still be working. I tried disabling and re-enabling all the shaders, then I tried uninstalling and reinstalling them. I even put the view distance back where it was in a last-ditch attempt to fix the problem. No joy

First make sure that your MGEgui.exe has both supply shaders with depth info and update shader variables checked, then after double checking that, reset your computer, and try running the game again.

Well, I'm not sure what the deal is, but if I start a new game straight from the main menu, I get no no DoF or SSAO. However, if I load a game, then start a new game from the in-game menu, DoF and SSAO work fine. Strange, but there you are. I guess this is solved.

Depending on which version of MGE you are using, the depth buffer is not initialized until a certain point of character generation--which should be the first time you walk outside. MGE waits until distant land is loaded before activating the buffer. Without that buffer, DoF and SSAO shaders will not work.

On the other hand, if you've already loaded a save, and you are outside, then the buffer is already loaded. Then the shaders would work as they should. Which means that this is not an issue on your end! (Hooray!) Just something to be aware of.

Ahhh, not only does that make sense, it's also very useful information. I shall file it away. Thanks!
