Dog Breed - related and visibly similar domestic dogs

Yeah, I know, BGS isn't very keen on details.

Yep, one sentence (or two posts in two distant threads I think) and then replying to responses is "going on at length" :D . Brilliant.

What kind of mutt would be your suggestion? Which breeds? How would you figure out which mixed breed dog is appropriate for The Commonwealth?

Really? You ask that after I said that I think any pure-breed dogs running around outside of isolated areas are nonsense?

Have a look at wild street dogs in developing/3rd world countries. That "breed".

Exactly, that would make a huge impact on my character and make it even more immerse.

That makes sense. In Brazil you will do not see pure-breed dogs on the street because people adopt most of these pure ones. Street dogs are pretty much "the ones left behind".

This will be my first Fallout journey and so, I have some doubts about the dog:

  1. Is there any way to bring my dog with me to the vault? Start the game with the dog already.
  2. is there any vault that was build specifically for dogs? We can/need to find the dog.
  3. Is the dog important for the journey as it is important as a companion?

Dog Meat is an Iconic character in and of him/herself that spans not only the FO universe but other media/games. Principally, Mad Max where I believe all other iterations are based off. Changing the bread would be a terrible atrocity, IMO. If you could get other dogs as companions, other then Dog Meat, then maybe we would have that option.

...though, the internet community cried and moaned so much that they added a titanless Titan Fall game mode so what the heck do I know about anything.

That's the trick. For you that dog is and will be the Dogmeat (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogmeat). For me it will be a German Shepherd https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Shepherd#History
I don't got anything against shepherd dogs but I would never adopt or buy one of them. Simple like that! And You can customize almost every single aspect of your character's life in 'Fallout 4 and I really don't think that me as character would have a shepherd dog. Like that, the whole thing of customization goes down and we will get more focus in a better performance for the character than similarities with me. So at the end, what we've got? A stranger as character and not me... And why I would like to waste my time building a character that is not me?

But let's focus in the existing dog. I have found this and this explains why it is as it is: According to the developers, this Dogmeat is a descendant of the Vault Dweller's original canine companion. His master, a scavenger, was killed by a band of raiders in the scrapyard where the dog is to be found. Dogmeat can be recruited by Fallout 3's player character, the Lone Wanderer. The dog can then find objects of value littered across the landscape and bring them to the player.

I recently discovered the website Vault 111, I liked what I saw enough that I subscribed and as I explored it came across the following under game perks, http://vault111.com/character/check it out. It describes the Attack Dog perk and how and why Dogmeat is such a special and capable dog.

Boxers, Pits and Rotties have also been used as military working dogs and would also fill the bill. as would Labs etc..

Check out http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1534682-completed-perk-chart-speculation-thread-2/for background on how the info was collected and some great intel on the game.

I am totally going to mod my cavapoo dog into the game. Nothing will be better than seeing a 10 pound puffball kicking a raiders ass.

Keep in mind that those perk descriptions are speculation. The description for Attack Dog is pure creative writing (not the entire description, actually, just the part that details the specific effects).

I think I would be more keen on doggy costumes...

cowardly lion to go with the power armor... and there's bound to be one follower with a bad enough weave to double for the scarecrow.

festive antlers and other holiday wear...

better be a molerat or radroach costume in there too...

maybe an alien or antenna headband...

or a dovahkiin helmet.

We currently have a Rottweiler/German Shepherd mix living with us (my daughter's actually), so I'd like to eventually get a skin mod to make the game dog look like him.

Thank you Dinrauko,

Just about all of this is speculation and suggestion, I 've sent people to the source so they can weight the quality of this speculation based on the research put into it by a long time 4 year near 1500 post researcher who put 200 hours into researching what is available on this game. Sentiment seems to be this is not you average dog. You have 8 years and over 1600 posts, do you recall similar perks for Dogmeat? I think there was one at least for Rex of the Kings.

well, there could be several homages to both the fallout universe and other IPs... or public domain references that may just be a sublte bit of poking fun (or outright parody) at some of their competitors... (modders are going to do it, anyway.)

With their own, I'd be thinking they should go with the dog gone awful puns and references... like Sulik's nose bone, Grelod the Kind's piglet (the pig children) costume, Harold's Branch of Friendship (yes, so your little doggie can wander around looking like a game of fetch gone wrong.), Miss Kitty's Cat Paws, Reverend Hound's badge, Mr. Pinch's bridle & saddle (let a sinister looking bobble headed Vault Boy ride your dog all night long.), A Tunnel Snake jacket, an AntAgonizer or a Mechanist costume (maybe mech for the dog, antagoni for the Survivor... there should be some matching sets in the mix to pull off the crazy pet owner vibe. Maybe a goldilocks wig (or a banana in pajamas costume) to go with the bear head? )

things a little ooc, but not too far out... still, one more thing to send those true FO fanbois and goils over the edge of things they believe that shouldn't happen in the fallout universe...

I dunno... or just the wide collection of animal costumes that generally leave dogs looking as if they're begging to be put out of their misery... (you know, sure as anything, they could have a market on dog apparel from the game... the etsy crowd would be in a frenzy to make enough in time.)

You can ignore my years and number of posts. I would bet on no one except Bethesda knowing more about Fallout 4 than gkk7z. If it is just his word against mine, your best bet is to go with his.

The only Dogmeat-related perk I remember is Puppies! It is a perk in the Broken Steel DLC that gives you a puppy should Dogmeat die. Don't count on me to remember many Fallout perks, though. The only Fallout games I have played are Fallout and Fallout 3 (without DLC). I didn't know there was a Rex until you mentioned him.

When it comes to dogmeat's breed, who's to say he is purebred?

I have a German Shepherd and two of my neighbors have two of his brothers, same parents different litters. The parents are purebred AFAIK and look it, but only one of the three looks like a true shepherd, one is black and white and the other looks like a large greyhound with shepherd-like colors.

On the other side, one of my friends has a dog who's father is a german shepherd mutt mix, and mother is a pure bred black lab. The dog looks 100% German Shepherd, you would never know he is not pure by looking at him.

Yeah when you think about it seems like purebred dogs would be really rare in a post-apocalyptic world

How do we know that dog is a german shepherd pure breed?
Maybe its supposed to be a chocolate lab, but mutation has caused it to look like another breed. Lol

In all seriousness, I still think the dog is a robot.
