Dogmeat: A Nuisance more often than not

Post » Tue Dec 01, 2015 6:00 am

I have a brother back home in Vermont who has three Labs for dogs. They shed like crazy and they are eating machines. All three dogs would be out on the deck, which surrounds half of the house and if you were to walk into the kitchen and open the refrigerator or cabinet door they are instantly at your side, with tongues wagging, mouths watering and begging for food. If you are not careful or paying attention you will either fall over them or they will snatch whatever food you have in your hand from you. Not only that if you are in the bathroom and let out a fart, they will bark up a storm. They freaking bark at everything. I spent the whole summer again this year, in Vermont, with those dogs and hated every minute of it. Now, don't get me wrong I do love dogs, but they damn well better mind.

Dogmeat constantly reminds me of those three dogs. He is always under foot. He will stand sideways in a door and won't move to let you by. Constantly whines when you are trying to sneak and will bolt ahead of you and give you and your position away. I freaking hate that dog. I want to kill him!

I tend to got after Kellogg, from the get go, after I get Sanctuary setup. So essentially I rescue Valentine first thing and then go after Kellogg,.So then I have to use Dogmeat. Afterwards I hook up with Piper. I am rather partial to Piper as a companion and love interest. I lover her one-liners and all that comes with her. I tried running with Cait, but she is to much of a complainer and to cold-hearted for my taste. I know Cait's backstory but we all have our crosses to bare. Can't live in the past.

I don't use any of them (Dog's chilling in Sanctuary, nice and safe). They get in my way and spoil my ambushes.

I have watched a couple friends play with Cogsworth and Nick. Both are pretty entertaining; I really like Cogsworth's maniacal, enthusiastic killing sprees, almost enough to relent and let him tag along.

What helped me decide to leave everyone including the dog behind was when Dogmeat was with me one lovely warm fallout day. We were walking down an old road and came upon a super mutate-filled complex (this was when I was level 15'ish). I decided to attempt at sniping them from afar and so I went into sneak mode. Dogmeat went into sneak mode with me too only to spot a giant mole and ran off attacking it. The mole decided to run towards the complex which Dogmeat thought was a great idea! That's when the loads of crap hit the fan...

I stupidly ran at him trying to tell him to stop! He ran into the walled up complex which of course woke up all the super mutates. Next thing I knew, there was a mini nuclear explosion, dogmeat was instantly put down, the mole rat went flying over the wall above my head (I was still on the other side of the wall), outside mutates came running which apparently brought in a roaming Legendary Assaultron which promptly started attacking all the super mutates. More explosions and shooting happened, I ran into a near by bus to watch the show.

After nearly 5 minutes, the Assaultron won and wandered off. Dog meat "woke up" and came back, bringing with him his new friend, a legendary mutate hound. Dogmeat promptly blocked the bus entrance while I tried to back away from the attacking hound. I died... Sonva-!

I kicked Dogmeat to the curb and never looked back.

I had to shoot my dogmeat in the head just to get him out of the doorway he was blocking.

Hahaha

I'm glad I'm not the only one who assaults their companions to make them move

yea, the blocking and luring issue with companions is a real pain

I like Paladin Danse the most, Codsworth is a good entry level companion, but rather useless later on in the game.

Look at the dog, hit command, pick random spot, hit go.

Crisis averted. Literally the easiest thing ever.

I have a dog and i absolutely hate dog whining, i [censored] hate that [censored], every time my dog does that i have to hit the window on my room so he stops doing that [censored] and when i started playing FO4 as soon as i heard that stupid dog whining i just left him, like seriously at least my dog stops doing that [censored] if i scold him, this stupid dog wont because its a program.

BTW the dogs you describe seem to be dogs that have terrible training if they dont respect your food, my dog dosent do that [censored] becuase he knows he has to respect me, probably morons that dont know how to train dogs and treat them as human beings and end being slaves of their dogs/pets in general.

That is the other thing that annoys me. You want to talk with your companion, but the damn command option keeps coming up or visa vera. I freaking hate that [censored]. The command option should not be separate from the dialogue wheel or whatever the hell it is.

Isn't this standard issue with all the companions...they stand in the way and tend to be annoying at times!? Ahhh, but I love them anyway!

I think Beth only put Dogmeat into the game so that people would spay and/or neuter their pets.

If this Dogmeat was anything like that annoying dog in Fallout 3, he would have been dead at level 1.

Dogmeat has been more helpful than a hinderance. Sure, he gets in the way sometimes, but now that he's got super jaws, I let him hold down enemies while I take out the others. My favorite is when he holds those suicide super mutants until the bomb goes off. Good thing the dog can't die.

He's only given away our position a few times, but I've given it away far more times. For whatever reason, our sneak level is -103,238 as any movement triggers the benign "What's that sound? I must be hearing things". I thought about putting perks points into sneak, but 25% isn't enticing enough to waste a perk, and I'd need two more just to get it to 50%.

Oddly enough: I find all these canned dog food but can't feed any to the dog.

I tried to travel with dogmeat, I really did, but he is just way too damn annoying. The A.I. for companions is terrible in general, but at least the others are interesting.

Even when I am home in Sanctuary he gets under foot. I am always tripping over him. One of my neighbors thought I had a real dog I was cursing at him so much.

What really irks me about Dogmeat is that damned gagging thing it does.
What the Hell is stuck in that dog's throat?
Would somebody give a a freakin' drink?!?
This is getting just about rediculous now. (lol)

Am I the only one who enjoys the dog? He's been my companion for about 99% of my game time..sure he can be a dumb mutt at times, but at least he don't judge my actions, he can carry my excess junk, he don't walk around saying the same stupid lines over n over n over..just a bark here and there..he's a dog, that's what dogs do...
People say he runs ahead...try sneaking if you know enemies are ahead..he will (at least for me) stick close by..sometimes he's a pain, but he's my favorite so far..

Dogmeat's peculiar sound byte for the infinity +1 time: *weggh*

Damn. I just about forgot how that sound was like until you mentioned it. It's like your memory is on a constant audio hiccup playback that simply just won't go away.

Thanks a lot.

edit: By the Nine. I finally remember what that sound reminds me of. It's the noise my GSD sometimes makes when he's really tired---it's actually a K-9 yawn! They somewhat overdid the sound byte on that one. :P

And yes, while 100% adorable, DM can be a real inconvenient pain in the ass. Especially where it comes to stealth and sneaking scenarios around superior level enemies. Making him stay outside a dangerous building or area while my PC investigated or cleared the area became too inconvenient. Since hitting level 10, I've opted to leave him in safety at Sanctuary and help Preston watch the place. Because for some bizarre reason, there's no option to send him to Home Plate in Diamond City.

I've only used Dogmeat and Piper as companions. Sure, I've hooked up with the others - but only so that I can dismiss them and send them to Sanctuary. I don't find companions particularly annoying, but I do find them surprising sometimes. For example, where did Piper learn Judo? Dogmeat's alleged deficiencies are easily dealt with and as for giving position away, so what? If, in real life, you were trying to sneak you way through a building full of heavily armed enemies (who are alert and ready because of the constant dangers of the world around them) would you take a dog along? If you want to be sneaky, leave the dog - or most other companions TBH - at home. Or have him/her wait for you somewhere. Learning to use the command system properly can solve a fair few of the companion issues.

The command system is a damn nuisance, if you ask me. For example, when you reach Fort Hagen to go after Kellogg and you have the Mutt plus, say Valentine, when to want to talk to Dogmeat the game wants you to issue a command, not talk. And, the same goes if you are trying to talk with Valentine.

The command system should be a part of the dialogue wheel; or, whatever the hell you want to call it. I have had to save and close out of the game and come back in to get the [censored] thing to work the way that I want. And, sometimes that doesn’t even work. I have had to continuously pound on the “E” key to get the damn thing to do what I want. I hate the [censored] thing!

I love Codsworth. He has saved my life many times. I love that saw thing he has to dismember enemies.. He is so much fun to hear taunting them while he is roasting them alive.

Dog is safe and sound in Sanctuary.
