He's a post apocalyptic dog so no telling what his attributes could be. Besides, who would use him if he couldn't carry anything as he's all ready lacking versus the other NPC's.

Mutants? Ok. Ghouls? Ok. Flying Ship? Ok.
Dogmeat can carry stuff? OMG! WAT? NO!
Not for nothing, but dogs are actually pretty good at carrying stuff. Many of the "working" dogs really like to do so, in fact, and lots of owners have harnesses in which they just put water bottles so the dog gets the "helping" experience. Granted, German Shepherds aren't really known for that, and 150 lbs or so is quite a stretch. But *mumble* Game *mumble*.
Someone needs to tell https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ooewuqf-VCE
Native Americans historically often used dogs to carry loads, or pull loaded sleds and travois'. Of course sometimes the dog became lunch a little later on...
In RL I go tramsing around where I got to carry food, clothes and roof, any dog coming along does the same bloody thing or doesn't come...you'de be amazed how fast they learn it's their own crap, that they will need it so trying to get rid of it is a bad idea
IG as long as i can't have a 2 headed walking steak to carry my dung, companions will suffer just as much as I do *shrugs*
Would love to be able to mod the dog armors so they look like saddle bags, would look nice.
OP: did you notice that this game is not "realistic?" Consider:
1. ammunition has no volume or mass, I can strip my player character down to their underwear and carry 10s of thousands of rounds of ammunition.
2. syringes that heal "damage," including "crippled" body parts.
3. metal suit that allows you to jump off of skycraqers and suffer zero damage
4. radiation that behaves more like a paint stain, you can "flush it out," with another kind of syringe.
5. crops that grow in less than a day (in game no less!)
6. "Mini-nukes" that work about like "mega-grenades"
7. humanoid entities that CANNOT die, short of using console commands to reset them from Essential status
8. "Fast travel"
9 "Crouching" = you are more cryptic now!?
10. Food that heals damage
etc., etc., etc.
If realism is your primary concern, a dog that can carry some stuff is pretty low on the list.
I consider this thread to be vapid and stale. Please come up with something more entertaining if you are really trylling.
Not sure how a dog carrying your stuff is that much more "unrealistic" than you being able sprint while carrying 200-300+ lbs of Junk, but I guess everyone has a threshold of "suspended belief"....
Dogs being used to haul stuff isn't exactly unheard off, sure there are better choices but if a large dog is all you have then its what you'll use.
Isn't it unrealistic to be thinking a video game needs realism? When I want realism I go out into real life. So sick of this [censored] idea of games needing realism. Or tha lame complaint about it that makes no sense. Tha sheer amount of unrealistic stuff in games makes even mentioning realism....unrealistic.
A very close friend of mine keeps a small pack to carry things on his dogs.
I have seen it done by other people as well. Seen some homeless traveling people doing it recently.
And be damn sure in some kinda post apocalyptic destroyed world if some dog wanted to hang out with me and share food it will be doing some work.
Maybe what you meant is maybe tha dog shouldn't carry as much? Because it is no unrealistic thing for dogs to carry things for people.
LOL I do think it is funny when people start talking about realism in a Fallout 4 game. I guess it is realistic that: I can shoot a nuke across a room and not only does the entire building NOT vaporize but I take no damage at all. That I can play for hundreds of hours without sleeping, eating or drinking. That I can step on a land mine, crippling both my legs, then I give myself a shot that instantly heals them. That I can place a water purifier in a pool and the pool never runs out of water. That I can personally carry enough guns, ammo and junk that would cause a real Army Duce truck to break down.
I could go on and on but you get the idea. Yea realism in the Fallout world LOL.
Though, if you're talking about realism, there's no way we would be able to carry the amount of gear that we do. So...
A super mutant with paws the size of a catcher's mitt who nonetheless handles a standard human sized "pipe rifle" no problemo.
Floating buildings.
Diesel power generators that never run out of fuel.
Jumping like an Olympian on the moon.
etc.
Possibly. I though they were saying that no one would use their dog on long trips to carry stuff. Didn't know if that first sentence was just auto-corrected or just bad sentence structure. I didn't understand the "oil for primus" thing. Was just thinking that if I was in the situation like in the game, that dog will be carrying supplies to help out.
Um... I typed "dog backpack" into google and got https://www.google.com/search?q=dog+backpack&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8.
Having a fully grown German Shepherd carry stuff for you is one of the least unrealistic things in the game. Certainly not unrealistic enough to warrant complaining about.
I guess you could get all pedantic and say "but Dogmeat isn't wearing a pack!", but then again neither is the SS and you're not complaining about that.

Didn't you know that Dogmeat has been mutated by the radiation?
She used to be a kangeroo....... And he still has a pouch..........
It's a video game,I'm glad hes able too.
If it breaks your murshunz that badly mod a pack on the little guy or use something else.
Granted without a sled or wagon or backpack it is pretty unrealistic. But fact is no one would use Dogmeat at all if he couldn't carry anything. Finding random loot and holding enemies just isn't enough. Being able to use him with the Lone Wanderer Perk helps, but you probably are not going to have that when you find Dogmeat and by the time you do get around to getting it there will be other companions that are more interesting.
But ... if you want to make a list of unrealistic things in FO4 ... let's start with weightless ammo ... including missiles, mini nukes, etc. And from there I could go on and on.
