Doing time.

I was always really disappointed there wasn't more to do/that happened to you as far as the justice system is concerned. Here goes...

Possible Repercussions for your Crimes

Fine - certain crimes you should be fined for. (petty theft, getting into scraps with citizens, petty property damage/vandalism, casting petty magic on unwilling citizens)

Jail - certain crimes you should be imprisoned for for a relevant amount of time. Also, if you can not pay the fine for something, you will be imprisoned for a short period of time. (theft of very valuable items belonging to important NPCs, armed assault, casting more harmful/dangerous/powerful magic on unwilling citizens, extensive property damage, kidnapping, mugging)

Execution - certain crimes will be seen as so terrible that they merit your being killed publicly. (murder of an innocent citizen with a weapon or magic, assault of royalty/officials, theft from royalty, property damage threatening the livelihood of entire towns/cities)

How you'll Get Out of It

Fines - If you don't have enough gold, guards may accept precious items (artifacts, expensive jewels, etc.) instead of gold, depending on the guard/setting (public or private). You may also attempt to flee in the hopes that you will escape and they will eventually forget your crimes due to the unimportant nature of them. How long it take to forget will depend on how many people saw you, how big the fine was, how long it has been since, etc.

Jail - You will no longer be randomly teleported into prison. A guard (or more usually guards) will capture you and escort you to the nearest prison. During this time, hostile creatures may attack, giving you a chance to make a run for it (wilderness), you may attempt to make a run for it (depending on whether there guards are distracted by the surroundings, how lucky you are, and how strong you are), be saved by guild members (if the odds are not too stacked against them and it is a guild that operates outside of the law, and you are important to that guild), or be rescued by NPCs that like you enough to risk their life and years in a dungeon to save you (rare but possible). Once in jail, depending on your stealth skills, you may be able to sneak a dagger or lockpick(s) or both in, as they will have you empty your inventory into a holding box, but you may choose to not empty certain items), the size of the items and your skill and luck will determine the chances of them realizing this. If you sneak a lockpick in you may be able to pick the lock and make a run for it. NPCs who care about you enough to risk it, may come visit you in prison and offer you a lockpick while the guards aren't looking. If you are the head or VERY high ranking member of an illegal guild, they may attack the prison and break you out (rare, more likely in smaller cities/towns?). Certain guards, depending on who's around/who's watching, may accept bribes, even if there are two or (very difficult to pull off) three of them arresting you, depends on how much gold you have, and whether it's on you (they can just take it) or at some other location, where you would have to bring them, and give it to them or face their anger. If its hidden in one of your home(s) a shack or a cave somewhere, you'd bring them, if its in a bank (something I hope they have this time around), they'd let you go in and take it out some of your money then give it to them outside to avoid suspicion. Or maybe there is some other favor they need from you, maybe someone they care about has been taken, maybe they've made enemies who have led them to fear for their lives?

Execution - This will function similarly to being brought to jail, except that you HAVE to escape. In these cases it will be very highly likely that people you really care about you will try and do something, or that an in-game event such as a dragon attacking or a town being raided by bandits might occur, giving you a chance to run for it. There may be times when escaping is extremely difficult and you have to load a save from before you were caught.

Given the complexity of this, I think it'll be more likely to be seen as a mod made post-release (maybe by me, who knows), than actual features in the game.

Ideas?
