Don't we all want split screen co-op?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 4:23 pm

I've been playing brink, and i thoroughly enjoy it. but, there's one thing...no split screen. This game is so focused on co-op, but why isn't there an option to sit with your buddies and play on the same screen? most games have some form of split screen...... I really think you should consider it.

I would have liked to see that I have friends who aren't fortunate enough to have a video-game console and when they come over I can't play this awesome game with them.

but that's exactly what i'm saying... you could play it with him if the game had split screen. Bad design choice in my opinion

You know what seriously pisses me off about the split screen topic? They said that the had to choose between better graphics or sacrificing graphics for the sake of split screen, and the chose good graphics. I understand their decision. but there is a video floating around about developer diaries that that shows how how almost two years ago the graphics looked 10 times better than they do now. So WTF? Bottom line is they butchered the graphics and yet we dont have split screen...

Short answer to the question the topic is posing:

No.

Long(er) answer:

I've heard that implementing splitscreen is a drain on memory, and the game pushes memory to it's limits as it is. I wouldn't want to cut any current features for something that a lot of people aren't going to use.

I don't see how the PC graphics could get any better tbh.

I don't know about you but i'm sure people have siblings that live with them they would like to share the experience of this game with but can't because there is no reason to own two of the same console or friends who you hangout with that can't afford a console so they can't play with you split screen has been implemented in most fps games since the PS2 and you mean to tell me they can't handle that on the PS3 further more look at the 360 most of their top name fps games have splitscreen you can usually take them online with you as a guest and you're telling me they can't handle handle that I find that to be very hard to believe.

There's a reason the game grunts and whirs a lot whilst it's spinning away in the disc drive. There's a reason it can sometimes take a minute to load a character. There's a LOT going on behind the scenes, top it off with some pretty flashy visual in the graphics and UI, and you've got yourself a pretty demanding game memory-wise. Or at least I imagine.

It's a running trend lately for more and more games to pass on the single-system options. I'm still hoping they do a non-splitscreen combat arena in a future Assassin's Creed game. Using the first game's combat system, not the later ones though.

As for Brink, it's just running with the trend of trying to outclass the pack, and realising that making the graphics work splitscreen would push the game engine (and console) too hard. PC version could probably handle it, but PC controls aren't really very split-screen compatible.

To achieve split screen they reduce polygons and texture quality. So half the detail = playable split screen. They can also change the view distance to speed the frame rates on split screen up.

But also, if you halve the size of the image a lower quality resoultion texture and polygon count and reduce the amount of world models on the map. this is not going to be majorly noticeable.

There excuse is really funny, because its exactly what other games do to acheive a split screen for their game, reduce detail... LOL

The real reason IMO is... if everyone was to play split screen thats half the profit potential gone.

The difficult thing would be trying to get a split screen menu andobjective wheel working that actually looks and feels right, heheh.

Its mainly the rendering that slows the game down, textures and stuff is cached in the memory of the consoles graphics card, the proccessor even though slower than PC is actually clsoe to the same because the xbox os is not windows... which likes to waste memory on multi tasking.

In seriousness though its probably SMART that congests the game... never know really

Agreed.
This is the first FPS shooter released on a console, focused on multiplayer, that have NO split screen.
Raw rip from the PC version.

They definately must include this in a patch further down the line. This is the strenght of consoles and even not everyone like or use it, the option should be there.
Personally this is something I definately would like to see implemented, as a matter of fact I assumed it was there, and was highly dissatisfied when I found out, when having a friend over, to notice there is NO split screen support for us console users.

Would have greatly appreciated split screen as an option. It feels like a game that would have benefited greatly form the option to play the game co-op with a friend.

As for it being a graphics/memory issue, if that really is the case then perhaps the developers need to learn to do more with the space they have, because there are games that have managed it just fine. I'm sure the customization options end up having a bit to do with it, but toning things down overall might have saved their on-line from some of the lag issues as well.

Worked for Resistance: Fall of Man on PS3 (that was the last game I played with split-screen).

EDIT: Not online though. I know something's done online with split-screen before, but don't remember what it was...

BO had online split-screen, which is sad given that the COD series doesn't really focus on teamwork at all; some game modes call for it, but the gameplay does not. That said, I would love split-screen, and I wouldn't mind if the graphics were reduced to that of MAG as a compromise (only if you chose to play split-screen - of course).

Actually, I thought Brink HAD Split-Screen before I played it.

In other words, YES Split-Screen is almost a MUST for this game.

Black Ops was 2 player on-line and 4 player off-line.
MW2 was 4 player off with 2 player mission mode.
WaW had a splitscreen campaign and 4 player off line deathmatch. (all of which I find funny because CoD used to never have splitscreen).

Resistance had SS, although the sequel's SS svcked comparitively.
LOTR Conquest had SS "campaign".
Borderlands has SS.

My friends and I actually buy based on it, as we like to make a day of it on occasion, so we search out the games with good off-line MP. Unfortunately it's left us buying CoD regularly since 4

This thread would be better served as a poll IMO. Personally I don't ever play splitscreen but I don't see it being much of an issue, if the devs have the time after making lobbies and balancing the game it would be fine to have in.

But only then.
