Don't get too excited about graphics

Post » Mon Feb 14, 2011 7:22 am

This is a multi-platform game. It needs to run smooth on Xbox360 and PS3 so.... Some people may have upgraded PC's since Oblivion, but the Xbox360 is no better than it was four and a half years ago.

There will likely be some upgrades to the engine, so it will look a bit better than Fallout 3 and Oblivion, and they will also likely make it semi-scalable so that it looks better on PC than it does on the 360. But the reality is that the PC market isn't that big any more, so they aren't going to spend a fortune doing lots of extra work especially for the PC.

So yeah, it will no doubt look really good, but when I see people posting pictures of real photographs and expecting it to look similar, you are only setting yourselves up for disappointment. Same goes for upgrading your PC components. My other PC still has an 8800GTX which is about 3.5 years old and it still runs 99% of games cranked. The only ones it struggles with are PC exclusives (Arma2, FSX, etc). The fact is, the crapbox360 is holding back progress of gaming graphics, and this game will be no different.

According to Bethesda itself, the game will feel like a next-gen console rather than the ones we got today. But I really don't care, it could have Fallout 3's graphics and I would still love it :D

Exactly how I feel. The game will be good regardless of graphics. Even slightly better than FO will be amazing. I say quit the hating and just enjoy the announcement...

I feel your pain. Microsoft needs to get the 720 out so that graphics can start improving again, until then the whole process is impeded by obsolete console hardware.

BWHAHHAHAAHA...sorry *Clears throat* Shows how much you know about technology.

Besides...PC have mods. Like Quals texture pack (I think that's what i was called) Made the graphics better then any game I've played. That's the benefit of PCs, keep on upgrading and upgrading the game graphics. The modding possibility's are endless.

Even if the graphics aren't incredibly advanced, the engine itself has been HEAVILY modified in nearly every other way, if not every other way. It will be a fresh technical experience. I'm sure of it.

I think I would prefer being able to have more characters and objects on the screen without the framerate going to hell rather than ultra high-res textures.

Yeah I agree. Oblivion used Gamebryo on the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

Now Skyrim is using Gamebryo on the same systems... 6 years later.

So would I, and Todd specifically mentioned upgrading such a thing. I would take a game that looked just like Oblivion but ran as smooth as silk on even console hardware while allowing more objects on the screen and a farther draw distance over a game that looked like Crysis but ran just like Oblivion.

I'd sacrifice the graphics and just ask them to focus on putting more on screen without gamebryo having a fit.

I'm sure they'll be adequate. I mean, even if it just had Oblivion graphics it would still be a great game. Not to mention the fact that for its time, Oblivion had very good graphics that could sustain it for quite a while. This isn't even factoring in things like mods and graphical improvements, which I'm sure the community will have out within the month. Really, it isn't that big of a deal if the graphics aren't SUPER UBER AWESOME.

I wish people would stop saying that. They are locked (in time) hardware. Do they have tessellation? DX 11? How about 2, 3, possibly even 4 (better) GPUs?

Nope, but computers do.

And I am not platform bashing either, it is a simple hardware truth! We are what, 3, 4 generations beyond 2005/2006 360/PS3 hardware? Even if it was stellar then, that's 5/4 years ago!

ok that hurt a little, but compared to a standard computer that someone gets (not mainly for gaming) is gonna be a lot worse than Xbox360 or PS3 and yeh I know the xbox doesn't have 11 different processors but it has 3 I believe. Anyways yeah I know a computer can be overclock and upgraded a whole lot. I am just saying a standard pc vs. a standard gaming system the gaming system is gonna win, and companies will try and appeal to the broadest audience, and I am more of a software person, not a hardware

Dude, I know the pc is the best and all (but I really don't care about the graphics) but you're underestimating the consoles' capabilities.

1. Oblivion has been out for 5 years, look at it now. That's time to optimize the performance for identical graphics, that's time to optimize graphics with the same performance.
2. More juiced has been pulled off the consoles since then, better comprehension of hardware and how to optimize everything.
3. Just look at the original xbox. In itself, it was a rather [censored] pc by today's standards, still it managed to do wonders with Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Halo 2 and Far Cry Instincts. Thing is, consoles are made solely for gaming, so technically a console can get more juice out than a pc with the same hardware. Though consoles obviously has major disadvantages like not being upgradable.

Still, I'm not meaning miracles are possible, only that we can still be surprised.

Maybe it's more about optimising software to get the most out of the machine

Red Dead Redemption is multi-platform on really old consoles (and it was an open world game), and yet it looked fantastic. I'm not saying Skyrim will look as good or better, but it being on consoles and it being multi-platform doesn't mean all that much.

Save it for the next game. Why is everyone so obsessed with graphics that they would hold off a game for a console generation that hasn't even been announced, yet? Surely everyone here is more than ten years old, no? I'm a sixteen year old, and I can give a speech about the days of 2D graphics with my SNES and that old Windows 95 Dell I used to use. How much shinier do they need to get?
