I Don't Like the Fact That We Know We Are Dragonborn...

Post » Sat Oct 01, 2011 2:58 am

I think Bethesda should've kept this one quiet... I mean, the best thing about Morrowind was discovering who you are and what's your purpose. Now when we'll find out about it in Skyrim we won't be surprised, we won't have to find out who we are, we already know who we are.

Sure, there's a certain mystery vibe to the game. After all, we don't know why the dragons are back, we don't know why Alduin wants to destroy the world (and if we do, don't tell me, I hate spoilers). But it would've been cooler if we had ALL that, plus, we didn't know who we really are, and as we go further into the game, we find out more and more bits of information about ourselves which eventually reveals who we truly are.

So... no, I don't like it. Anyone else feels the same way? Anyone else would've preferred not knowing we're Dragonborn?

It's not as easy to hide the fact that you are special in Skyrim as it was in Morrowind.

I thought they did it as a way of trying to attract people who haven't played TES before. While it might have been(would've) a lot more interesting to not find out until we killed our first dragon, there isn't much we can do now.

I'm fine with knowing that I was Dragonborn, but how else would they be able to tell people about the dragon shouts and whatnot, after all it's one of the main things the plot revolves around.

But how do you know you are just the Dragonborn?

Food for thought...

In morrowind ,it said: You were chosen. It's kind of obvious really, just like other games.

I understand what they were trying to do, I know it's for publicity and all that stuff. Yet, I just realized I prefer not knowing we're Dragonborn. Figured it'll come to us with less power and less surprise... and I guess it should be both a powerful and surprising moment when we find out about it in the game (or at least it has the potential to be).

Well it was pretty much blatantly obvious that we were Nerevarine in the first 20 minutes of the MW MQ.

Wouldnt be that hard to find out you're Dragonborn...Especially if you pay close attention to the lore and put the pieces together.

I'm more concerned with the fact that we ARE dragonborn, regardless of whether we want to be or not.

People rant all the time about not wanting to have a voice in-game, because it defines a part of their character that they'd rather make up themselves, as well as not wanting to know why we're to be executed because then they can make up their own background. WTF do you call being Dragonborn then? That defines your character right down to the marrow of your bones. I have no say in this, my character is prophesized to save the world, and I ain't got no say in it. If I'd rather play a roving mercenary and never get involved in the main quest, I'm kinda fighting the whole purpose of the game, which makes me feel awkward.

So much for "Be who you want to be", Todd.

hindsight is a wonderful thing, if you had it you could've only found out the release date of skyrim and stayed away from the forums and any interviews about it and you wouldn't have actually known until you played the game.

So the prophecy has speaks about a Dragonborn, who will appear when the dragons return, and save the world from certain destruction.

We are just a humble adventurer who tend to swallow dragon souls upon killing them and capable of using ancient magics.

I WONDER WHO THE DRAGONBORN WOULD BE.

I don't like knowing this either, but I think Bethesda had little choice. As a major and unique mechanic to the game, Bethesda wanted to showcase shouts, and I don't see how they could have done that without giving away that the character is dragonborn.

Seems like they didn't have much of a choice, because they wanted to be able to show off the dragonshout mechanic before release.

It's a game, even being a Open World Role-Play Game it stills being a Game and needs Purpose and a Main Quest. A Game without a specific purpose and a Open World is... Minecraft.

I know that many people would like simply being thrown at Skyrim without objectives and needing to make your own path. But that simply would not be a "Complete TES", we always had a Main Quest and always will.

Yes, but if you do that you're looking for spoilers (in most cases), which I'm not.

Anyway, in Morrowind it was somewhat obvious we're Nerevarine, but the small uncertainty was nice, like how we needed the tribes and houses to recognize us as Nerevarine before we really "Become" him. It was a process of uncertainty, and even to the end we weren't really him, we were just an incarnation, and not the real thing.

So, I know it's hard to hide the fact we're Dragonborn, but if we had some uncertainty (like I wrote 3-4 times so far), it could've added some interest to the whole process of finding out we are... you know?

Every Elder Scrolls game puts you in a position where you're prophesied to do something crazy.

Doesn't mean you have to.
