I don't understand my faction reputation...

I've been playing and loving Fallout New Vegas the last few days but I seem to have hit a bit of a wall.

After hours of sidequesting and exploring I decided to follow the main quest up to where you gain entry to the New Vegas strip, up to this point I had largely gone along with the NCR but I wasn't idolised by them nor was I vilified by Caesar's Legion.

Anyway, I got to a point where I received a message from Caesar requesting that I meet with him and that he would also pardon any crimes committed against his faction, I also received a similar message from some head honcho at the NCR, requesting that I meet with him ASAP and all crimes are pardonned. This was about the same point where you get bombarded with tons of quests and different possibilities.

Anyway, I decided to go go in pursuit of Benny to Caesar's camp. According to my world map, my reputation at Cottonwood Cove is Neutral, all well and good. However, upon arrival I was promptly butchered by Caesar's Legion troops, and it's important to note that I was wearing absolutely no faction armour or clothing whatsoever. I was puzzled by this, but I assumed I must've somehow done something to anger them and I'd have to find a way around it. The only thing I had done that would cause my reputation with CL to deteriorate was rescue Powder Ganger captives from them and I killed a couple of them that attacked me. I went back to Novac and managed to purchase a suit of Legion armour that I had previously sold there, I equipped it and went back to Cottonwood Cove. This seemed to work and I boarded the ferry to Caesar's fort. After arriving, everything was still cushty, but after going up the hill and through the gate to my audience with Caesar, everyone suddenly turned on me and killed me. I reloaded an earlier save but the same thing happened again. This is really frustrating because I fail a bunch of quests and I cannot see how to progress with this questline and get to Benny and the platinum chip. :S

Any suggestions? Also, it's worth noting that when I view my rep on the Pip-Boy, nothing shows up for CL whatsoever. :/

Another hiccup I had came during the "Wild Card: Side Bets" quest. When I go to make contact with the Brotherhood of Steel they gun me down on sight without letting me ask any questions or make contact with them. I don't really want to kill them all and in any case, they are extremely tough when you're not a particularly high level. Is that normal? Is it because I sided with NCR? I remember hearing how they'd fought the BoS over HELIOS one in the past. But how fast does news travel? Particularly when the recipient is in a hidden bunker.

I don't really know what to do, I can't do two seemingly vital quests and I don't wanna start again after putting 15 hours of play time in.

Maybe your just not a likable person  Upgrade charisma, throw on the sixy night wear, bring lots of dongs, and party time. The legion likes the kinky stuff

I do have low charisma, now you mention it, because I assumed that Charisma was going to be as utterly useless as it was in Fallout 3 and dumped it. But I don't think that can cause an entire faction to kill me for no reason.

You're not the first person I've seen with this problem with that particular quest. And you're clearly not dumb and missing something obvious so I'm beginning to think this one might actually be a bug. Unless everyone who's had this problem has used charisma as a dump stat too and this is a consequence, but it feels unlikely.

As for the Brotherhood, that might well be the NCR thing. You commit to a side like that and some people just aren't going to like it. I don't know if it'll help but if you can get Veronica she *might* get them to simmer down enough for you to get friendly with them. I don't know.

Here's what i pulled for fallout wiki

Charisma
Modifies: Speech and Barter skills, NPC disposition, party limit.

Pretty vague on "npc disposition"... but seriously.. maybe your just not likable with low charisma.

Well, I suppose it could be that, though it does sound vague. I would have thought it would be more directed towards individual NPCs since they already have the whole faction reputation system governing how factions respond to you.

I think I'll go around and do some sidequesting and exploring and see if there's a patch in the next few days that could sort this out.

I don't think it would be very fair to punish someone for how they choose to assign their SPECIAL points. Should be actions that dictate NPC reaction.

I have an abysmal charisma, but I'm Neutral with Caesar's Legion, and they don't attack me on sight. However, if you have Boone as a Companion, he's classified as NCR, so they will be hostile to him and you by association.

Do not take Boone with you when heading to Caesar's camp. He makes all of them KoS too you even if you have that thing the Legion gives you.

I had this exact same problem when trying to get to Cottonwood Cove after getting Caesar's Mark. After several experiments that resulted in death, I finally figured out the problem - companions. I had Boone with me, who is strongly against the Legion. I simply told him to wait for me at some farmstead and I then I waltzed into Cottonwood Cove unmolested.

I'd like to point out that prior to this revelation I tried having Boone take his hat off, but the Legion still attacked us.

I didn't have Boone with me, I had told him to wait somewhere else. Does that still count?

I recently got a message notifying me that "Boone has returned to Novac" and I lost the Spotter perk. I'll try again and see if I get better results, maybe the game thought Boone was with me or something.

Thanks for the prompt help everyone.
