I don't understand people

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 8:54 pm

I bought my Xbox 360 about 2 years ago pre-owned so it had other gamertags. me and my brother looked through what games they had. we didn't think anything of it. but then yesterday i remembered that the last owner of the xbox had Oblivion. so i loaded up the ancient relic and saw he had but one character. a RedGuard Battlemage he had beaten the game at level 17 and had like 50 quests in his quest log >.< i don't understand why people only do the MQ's in video games.

People who only do the MQ are usually not grasping the ES concept. They just want to finish the game and move on.

It's possible that he was so inspired by playing through the MQ that he went out and bought the PC version, built himself a gaming rig, and is now modding the game to his heart's delight. :)

I am open-minded enough to understand why people want to play TES in this manner: because they can. If you wanna just steamroll thru all the quests and miss out on these games' awesome potential for roleplay and exploration, have at it...who am I to judge?** Also, there are literally hundreds of games vying for our attention. When I was in high school, for instance, I remember seeing all the games out for the Atari 2600 and just wanting ALL of them. Granted, none of these games like Pitfall, Tunnel Runner, Asteroids (etc) can even compare to TES, but still. Younger gamers (I don't know how old the OP's previous Xbox owner was, mind you) have a voracious appetite to get into as many games as possible. TES: IV is just another game for these folks.

But for me? I don't need all those other games. And I'm glad TES offers us the opportunity to live and grow with our significant others, sometimes for years in some cases.
.

**---but if you are a gamer who just steamrolls thru quests, and then complains the game is "shallow" or "generic" without truely exploring its other half....

i don't understand why people only do the MQ's in video games.
Because most video games are only main quests. That's all there is to do in most games. There isn't even a 'main quest' to most games, there is just the game. When you finish it you either start over or play a different game. That's what people know. That's the way many people have been trained by other video games to think.

But, having said that, as The Gadester wisely points out, there is no "right way" to play an Elder Scrolls game. We play games to have fun. If the guy next to me has fun rocketing through Oblivion's main quest, he's playing the game the right way, for him.

I think that should be The G^de'ster. ;)

Oblivion was my first true sandbox style game. Before that the only games I had ever played that had optional side-quests were ones like Neverwinter Nights 2 and Diablo 2, which have a few extra dungeons you can explore while you go along the main quest. Or as Pseron said, the game. I usually did them, because after all, I paid for the games, I wanted to get the most out of them. But those were nothing like Oblivion, where you can just go wherever you want, and do whatever you want, at any time. It took me a while to get used to that concept, after so many years of playing ID Software and Bioware games.

Haa haa, I'm The Gadester. I like it. Or the more esoteric form is G^dst^r. I like that one too. Nick names are fun. I like what you said, Wyrdster about games being just a main quest. No not a main quest, just a singular game. So true.

My first sandbox was GTA: VIce City. Believe it or not, this was my first...probably 2 years before I discovered Oblivion! I was at some guy's house and he had GTA: San Andreas. I'm not a big fan of violence but I couldn't help it. I asked the guy "hey, can I try that?" and so he hands me the controller.

I said "hey, what'll happen if I hit that guy?" pointing towards some guy on-screen, and my friend says "go ahead!" So I did. :slap: you all are gonna think this is weird, but I couldn't believe how real it seemed. The guy on screen was now totally pissed at me, and starts chasing me! What I loved was the spontaneity of it all. It was a little adrenaline rush being chased by that guy, and a lot of fun! I had to have this game!

I got Vice City instead of San Andreas, though. I just like the whole 80's thing. Vice City has "missions", just like Oblivion's quests, but one can ignore these missions, and instead just drive around, mess with NPC's, get in trouble with the law, and EXPLORE. OMG I couldn't believe the exploration possibilities. There's stuff EVERYWHERE in those games.

So it's like this. In a way, I already had the mind-set foi Oblivion, and didn't even know it at the time. There are quests, but we don't to get involved with them at all if we don't want to.

There's an area under the Arena Bloodworks? I didn't even know that myself. Well, there you go: even people like myself who have played Oblivion since the day it was released can find out new things about it.

I usually tend to do the MQ in Elder Scrolls games first, with some other quests on the side as I chance upon them. I like to play this way because it introduces the challenge of "well, I guess I saved the Kingdom. Now what?" And it becomes an entirely new journey.

Hey, not long ago I was in something called the Bloodworks Sewer. That’s got to be under the Bloodworks because S runs down hill, right? Didn’t see any thieves that I remember, just a bunch of rats and crabs.

There is an iron bar door down there in the Bloodworks Sewer that you can only open during the final Thieves Guild quest. It always drove me crazy wondering what was past it, until I finally played a thief.

Same here. Growing up playing strictly linear games with no free exploration whatsoever, it does take time to get used to the freedom
