if your custom character is close to an assassin or nightblade, you can start out with an elven shortsword if you pick the right options.

I never take running as a skill because you can level it pretty quick and you use it all game long. You can in character creation get a silver staff and a suit* of iron armor, so if you aren't inclined toward the ebony dagger there are other helpful items. The favorite book usually sells well. I think it's better to load up on magic skills if you're going to have any at the start because I find them harder to level as you go.

Imps destroy people who don't have large health pools and can't make the saves, and the humans in privateer's hold are really a serious issue to the unarmored.

Also, a quick way through the dungeon is the secret door mentioned earlier in this thread, you get to skip that skeleton with his high AC and terrifying shriek!

Finally, in addtion to people not necessarily knowing the controls, people might not be used to the combat. Using stabs and horizontal attacks will let you hit easier, and these early monsters don't take much damage to kill. However, using the vertical and diagonal strikes, a character finds it much harder to hit, and the extra damage isn't needed at all.

The first imp can hurt a lot if you aren't stealthy, it will open the door and start the fight on it's terms (with a harmful spell). Imps also can rarely cast two spells in succession, ending your character. I'm a vet and I die on the imps sometimes, they are the hardest thing in that dungeon.

I take running as a skill because it's so easy to level up. I can get my stat boosts easier that way.

The game gets a little more difficult, but for a veteran it's not much of an issue (especially if you have inate spell absorption)

It might also be the combat system. I don't know about you guys, but when I played the game for the first time I had never before used a move-the-mouse-to-swing type system. I couldn't hit that first rat at all and died. I also couldn't figure out how to use magic at all.

Combat system was painful till I realized to change it to more modern.

Using the keyboard for looking up and down is very cumbersome. The mouse makes it all the difference

i find it hilarious people can't see the rat, crouching should've been the first instinct. though i guess that would be dos-era thinking.

i think one game i playing completely crouching, claiming my character was a, erm, 'little person'. you could do everything crouched, even climb, lol.
