Don't you miss the complexity of Morrowind?

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 5:06 am

Hey everyone, I don't know about you guys, but I'm really miss the complexity of Morrowind, like use different parts of different armors, to do your on spell, to have to worry about the weapon/armor wear and tear, to have to buy a lot of equipament to do the alchemy, the various type of weapons short blade, long blade, etc, and the different skills to everyone of them. It's seens that in Skyrim they are trying to call more people to play the game removing a lot of complexy, I've felt this since Oblivion, I hope they do a more complexy TES VI or at least try to do a difficulty schema to make more or less complexy.

I sure do.

On the other hand, when playing Morrowind I miss the upgraded physics (archery!!) and the overall graphics of Skyrim.

Yes, I agree. For this reason, I'm going to install Morrowind again and play it with the MGE mod.

Skyrim has more complexity than Morrowind. You're just focusing on what Skyrim left behind instead of what it picked up.

Yes I do.

And a word to all the inevitable nay-sayers: Most of us do not actually want Morrowind 2.0, we (or atleast I) want a TES RPG that inherits the good elements from previous TES games (most notably Morrowind).

I agree - as a person who likes to take all of the fine tuning aspects to my character and play with them in detail. The newer ES's lack that. That said, the world is much bigger and the quests more involved and interesting so I am enjoying the game just as much.

Heck, I wish it were more like Wizardry from 1982 on the Apple II computers. There was a special feeling you got when you rolled the dice at character creation and got 27 points to put into character skills instead of the usual 18 or so. You knew you would have a starting bad ass for sure.

If by complexity, you mean vague numbers, clunky gameplay, a complete lack of balance and difficulty that flatlines halfway through, then... no, not really.

Look, Morrowind was good for it's time and I loved it back in the day, but it has not aged well in the slightest.

Throwing a bunch of stuff onto a pile makes for a complex system. It doesn't necessarily make for a good one.

I think that's a problem many people have recognizing. There's nothing inherently good about complexity. It's a broad spectrum that includes well-engineered and bunch-of-crap-we-tossed-in. BOCWTI can be fun. But let's not pretend it's a high standard.

I can like either in different circumstances. But I tend to find more enjoyment in engineered complexity.

Easy.

More options > less options.

I notice you always seem to be so negative and hostile when Morrowind is involved, for me it's not so much about complexity, but freedom and options, I prefer Morrowinds Attributes because there were more and they all did different things, leveling up as a whole was much better with Morrowind's way.

While the combined armour is nice, I really miss the mix and match feel of Morrowind. Don't like the pauldrons for a particular armour set? Use some different ones! And so on. It wouldn't be so bad having a lot of seperate peices for armour if the inventory was more like Morrowinds (as in, an easy to read grid thumbnail layout), but I fear we won't see this again in another TES game due to the shared development and assets for both console and PC.

Yes but taking Morrowind's system as a base and adding 10 years of technology with the combat from Oblivion and Skyrim would make for a pretty damn good game.

I don't know why they didn't just add hardcoe mode like New Vegas, that would have made a lot of people happy. My guess is that they wanted to use that as an enticement for dlc down the road.

Skyrim has more complexity in combat mechanics. It does not have more complexity in overall gameplay mechanics. Morrowind focused on the RP in RPG, Skyrim focused on the G.

Let's be fair, much as I loved Morrowind it wasn't that complex. And indeed the few areas that were relatively complex, such as the chance to hit based on skill and attack power, were stupid concepts.

Despite my love for Morrowind, some of you people really need to ditch those rose-tinted glasses of yours and move on.

I'll take Morrowind alchemy, enchanting and spellmaking anyday. With those, you could create your own content inside the game. Does Skyrim even has a feather/levitate spell?

I love Skyrim, its a great game, my game of the year for sure (and this comes from someone who loved the latest Deus Ex despite all odds). But lets be serious here, complexity wise, Morrowind > Skyrim.
