Donations for personal applications

Post » Fri Jan 17, 2014 4:18 pm

In the past I wrote some small applications to automate tasks for myself or just make things easier. They took quite awhile and the code is not the best. But recently I discovered my only publicly released application has been downloaded over 6000 times since the first released version. I was discussing with a friend and it was suggested I sell it. But I don't feel the code is good enough or they will be used by a wide enough audience. Plus, programming is not my career choice and I do not write stuff often.

So then it turned into just posting all the applications and source code and just having a donations link. Do you all think that might be a feasible idea or would it not be worth it in the long run? I do not need the money and like the idea of open source and sharing ideas and useful applications but it might be good for a resume either way or as a personal growth opportunity.

My biggest applications are a networking quiz game (gives you IP you guess subnet and network) and a program to automate creating registry keys for Medieval 2 mods which adds them to the launcher. I also have one that cleans all the steam games folders of leftover DirectX files and another which rewrites a couple lines in the middle of a large config file for another program. I have a couple other things but they are nnot significant and I think never fully worked right, but its been so long I could be mistaken.

This is not an uncommon thing. And, it's not rude to ask, especially if you don't make it nagware. Maybe just say, I need to feed the hamsters that are running the PC and donation would be appreciated.

I would also be surprised if you got much in the way of donations. Maybe these are just the complainers, but the feedback I have heard are the donations are little to none. I have never coded anything and sold it, because I svck at it, so I don't know what kind of cash flow to expect.
