Dont overprice respec.

Post » Tue Feb 18, 2014 8:00 pm

When I first got into game on my second beta, I had a build in mind. I knew I was going to want(eventually):

at least 1 or 2 talents from Aedric Spear
at least 2 from Dawns Wrath
the rest from dual wield and Restoring Light

Whats the best way to level a skill line? Put the first available skill on your hotbar. But I dont want puncturing strikes I want focused charge.
(skills become available as you gain levels in that tree, its not like wow where you need to take things from the lower tier to have the higher stuff)

Once we get the skills we want, were all going to respec at our first convenience, greatly increasing our amount of useable talent points.

Heres to hoping that optimizing my build doesnt end up eating up all my gold.

I waited till I unlocked skills sometimes. However, I ended up getting any skill I could get my hands on because I needed them to defeat a certain boss.

Good luck hoping respecs won't be something you need to mortgage your horse for, have you noticed the prices of everything?

Respec gold sinks should be a thing of the past, especially in a game which so many ability choices like this. Just make it free or low fixed cost.

Respecs should only be available if significant changes are made to the skill lines.

I actually disagree strongly with this. There are going to be a lot of skill points available in the world; more than enough to make sure you have an adequate combat skill set. Low prices for respec could result in abuse of the crafting skills, with people leveling their crafting, but only respeccing skills into it when they need to make items, then immediately speccing back into combat. That type of gameplay shouldn't be encouraged.

Isn't this the same thread on TF? My thoughts are the same, the price should be enough that respeccing should be your last alternative. There are hundreds of skill points in the game with main quests, leveling, and dungeons. Not to mention sky shards. If you're respecting just because you dislike the first skill that's a little extreme.
I'm not a hardcoe player or a TES purist, but I do believe respeccing should have a hard price to it. Your character has been working on his or her skills and suddenly because you pray to stendarr or shor or whoever you learn a completely new skill set.

'greatly increasing our amount of usable talent points'?

3 class skills, 6 weapon skills, 1 world skill (Soul Trap is free and you can't be a werewolf and a vampire at the same time), 3 guild skills (+2 with TG and DB), 2 alliance skills (emperor is all passives, I think).

That's 15 (17) points if you want to take the first skill in every line - and you won't, who needs to level up every weapon? Wasting 15 points won't kill you with all those skyshards lying around. It really doesn't make or break your build.

Oh no! Another point of difference where we have people who treat games like a fun little diversion and a game vs people who treat games like serious business and a job.

I think respec prices SHOULD go up constantly but have the price decay with time. Maybe no matter how high your respec price was, it can decay by say 25% per week so after a month of no respeccing it is back to cheapest base price.

That way it will discourage frequent respecs and shenanigans, but will not be prohibitive if you want to try something new.

1200ish for first time.

You can respec 3 things, skill points, attribute points... and I forget the 3rd.

what are the disadvantages of being to respec any number of times you wish at a low cost? There are so many abilities in this game and theorycrafters and people who like experiementing different playstyles will find that they are in heaven. Why penalise them ?

Not sure I'm understanding some of you but you do NOT need to take the first skill in a skill set to level up that skill set. Simply wielding 2 weapons will level up dual wield skill past the first special ability. There are many weapon sets that I skipped the first skill

The reason is simple if it is to cheap its far to easy to abuse it in regards to crafting skills/pvp builds etc.., so while i do agree on having 1 low cost/free respec for any char(just incase you made to many mistakes lvling up), that price should also eather rise exponentialy to prevent respecing to often or simply be timegated(like lmited to 1 respec per set amount of time).

Off the top of my head - it would allow people to dump skill points in any crafting line just to craft an item and then respec back to a combat build. Cheapens the meaning of crafting and skill selection.

Everyone being able to craft anything will result in no one needing anyone else for crafting, which will be detrimental to player interaction and the game economy even.

Anyone being able to be any class at any moment, will make classes pointless and make most people less skilled in playing their classes.

Somebody can probably think of better examples.

MMOs are games you play for a long time. Eventually you'll end up having more gold than you know what to do with.

Everything is relative.

Respecs are also not as needed here because of how many skill points you get. You can easily correct a mistake just by getting a couple skyshards or another level.

Wait you put skill points in crafting? I thought they unlocked based on your lvl of crafting. Like blacksmithing the first passive is allow use of iron ingots but I never put points in there to unlock it? ;\
