I dont understand the point of having a house

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 4:31 pm

I just made 5k gold, but I don't understand the significance of spending it on a house right now when I could use it to train up smithing or something.

I remember a few people on here saying to make sure I immediately buy a house as soon as I get 5k gold.

My question is: Why?

Dragon bones and scales, along with other loot.

You don't have to immediately buy it, but they're useful in the future.

Dragon bones weight 25 each and add up fast if you are killing them. They were the whole reason I bought a house.

Lol if I didn't have my house I would be around 4000/360 in my inventory... I'm a true hoarder... but you will regret not buying a house soon... trust me... buy Breezehome and get the bedroom and use the chest next to your bed to store your stuff... breezehome is actually really cool to me... best house (I have Riften and Solitude one as well)

Dragon Bones, Dragon Scales, Leather, and Ingots.

That is why you want a house.

I don't think anybody mentioned this yet, but dragon bones weigh a lot.

I bought it with my first 5k because I am planning on leveling smithing to make the dragon armor. And those bones and scales are waaaaaaaaay to heavy to lug around until I get it up to that level. Plus you can put unlimited amount of loot in your chest, which doesnt get stolen from. So if I have a ton of loot and bankrupt all of the vendors and dont want to deal with traveling around to sell it, I can just throw it in my chest for a later date.

Basically a house makes it so being over encumbered only happens when you have very poor planning before heading out, have nowhere to store valuable loot, or if you hit the loot jackpot.

Alchemy ingredients, potions, multiple sets of equipment, books... that's why you want a house.

Even without dragon bones, I desperately needed storage space loooong before I got the 5k together for the first house. But, then, I'm a packrat.

Speaking of dragon bones and scales, I had put all of mine into a barrel at the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary and after you know what happens, that one barrel i put all mine into was gone! FFFFFFFFFFFFFFF***!

Try going without a house as long as you can I guarantee you by a couple of levels you’ll be thinking “Should have bought that house when I had the money”

I purchased a house in Whiterun as soon as I got the chance. It's been pretty useful in the storage of excess items. Such as enchanted gear I don't want to sell, Wuthaad, and so on. Very useful.

One word: storage

It's the same reason why we have houses in real life. It's a place to put all of our crap.

Play the game the way you want to though. If you don't see a reason to buy a house right now, then don't buy one.

certain quest chains give you houses. but those are long and hard to get to at low level and only 100 storage space.

plus if you try to hold off for the freebies, you lose out on alot of gold that can be made since you have the extra space to haul crud

I like it - it's nice to have a place to store stuff.

One thing, though. I walk into my bedroom, and close the door. Then, walk to the bed and click on it to sleep, by that time, the door opens and there stands Lydia. I sleep xx hours, and she stands in my bedroom the entire night, watching me.

Creepy. I know she's responsible for keeping me safe, but that's a bit much.

She eats quite a bit. I'm actually surprised she hasn't eaten my Sweet Roll.

EDIT: Of course, you know, even if she did I couldn't turn her in for eating it because the guards already mock about somebody stealing my Sweet Roll. :glare:

The house is important to most of us because we collect and store huge amounts of random crap.

Immersion. I liked having a home for my character. Unless something comes up, I usually take my character back to the house when I finish playing for the day. I'm more perplexed why people would instead powerlevel smithing as it is such an efficient way of trivializing the game.

As much as folks moan about Lydia, on future play thru you don't have to speak to her and she can remain your house jarl, in name only, where you first met her...that is always an option.
...I think.

[edit] not house jarl....should be "housecarl".

I resemble that remark...

Seriously, I have probably 2000lbs of crafting supplies in a sack in Breezehome (should have been labeled 'Bag of Holding' rather than 'Small Sack'...), and another several hundred in plant parts in the Apothecary's Pouch on top of the Alchemy Lab in the back room.

Being able to mod my weight carry is a wonderful thing to someone like me....even with a house, I'm such a packrat I'd never get it all "home" without 95678941 trips back and forth.

But yeah, even without the concept of being a SuperPackRat, just the house alone is definitely worth it for storage value. Think of it as a really big garage. I haven't figured out if non-house places are "safe" to put stuff (some acquaintances say they lost stuff pretty fast when put in random empty chests etc) so I figure the houses, barring bugs (ahem...) are where to go for now.
