Door - 'Nother Thief Suggestion

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:16 am

Maybe door-knocking should be implemented? It would make the npc/owner of the house come downstairs, open the door and look around confused...while he's at the doorstep, you can take advantage of that and go trough the backdoor.

Sorry if the idea has been posted before, i'm just thinking out loud

I hope so. Having to break in every time I want a word with someone was kind of stupid...

Not what the OP had intended it for, but it would be a nice idea for that.
For actual thievery it would be kinda weird.

Knock on the door, then knock on the head of the fellow.

Why do you all want to steal! It isn't right to steal! Just stop.

Or you could just knock on the door to initiate a conversation. :)

I'm almost sure this has been talked about, but yes it would be nice. Plus I remember Todd talking about entering someones house, and if you were friends with that person, they will let you stay with them for the night.

I really wish every RPG maker would implement this. It always feels so not right to just walk into someone's house to talk to them and wander around. You play games like Baldur's Gate where people chastise you for entering their abode, then others that could care less. I absolutely hated it. Sometimes it makes the games unplayable becuase if you do play that you won't enter people's personal spaces, you can't start or finish some quests.

I think part of that was also if you were friends with someone, they wouldn't mind you coming into their house at night, whereas a stranger would probably NOT like a random person strolling into their home at midnight. Which makes complete sense and makes you wonder why we never thought it was missing before...

Yeah! Great idea! I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone notice on neither these nor the unofficial forums and their wishlist threads. A very important detail, thanks for reminding me and, hopefully, Bethesda!

Very bad idea mainly because after you sneak in the back door do you think the owner is gonna stay at the front door till your done? Then once he turns around and catches you in his house he kills you because he's a crazy nord barbarian!!!! i take it your a mage/warrior class 99% of the time..

This would be nice, especially if they react based on what time it is. So if it is 3 am and you knock on your friend's door he will be annoyed, but forgiving. And if someone really dislikes you and you spend the entire night knocking on his door every 20 minutes and running away if he sees you do it he will RAGE at you. With his weapons. Dozens of implementations here, each one useful too.

Knocking would be great, although perhaps too specialized for Bethesda to bother implementing. In general though, I definitely think NPCs should be drawn to sounds made by thrown objects - so we could tip over a vase or something and then when somebody runs over to investigate, we sneak past them.

Nah, it shouldn't be too hard. It should be pretty obvious there must be a way to knock on doors. Maybe just knocking the door without your weapon equipped (with hand-to-hand). Basically, just make NPC's, both if they're in your cell or in an indoor cell, react to such sounds.

more often than not, the simpler the concept, the harder it is to implement it.

They could make so when the door is locked (nighttime, or when no one is home), you get the option to knock or pick the lock when the door is activated. Cells already react to being empty or after a certain hour so this would be the easiest implementation.

Edit: Thinking about it more, they could put a 'Knock' button next to the auto attempt if lockpicking is the same.

Knocking instead of just barging in would be better. In all cases well unless your an orc.

Careful when you kill all those bandits n other npc they might have kids.... It's a game not life.

Beggar: "Me children are starving"

On Topic, though, yes. make it so you have the "pick lock" option when sneaking, "knock" when standing upright. or just make it so whenever you hit the door (with anything but magic) it works like knocking.

really simple concept that would add much immersion.

In Oblivion you could barge into a house and you would see a person sitting in a chair gulping down something making real wierd noises, and all of a sudden he stops, looks at you, and says "Greetings to you!" and goes on eating.

it just reeks of wrong, but it seemed right, only because I never gave it much thought.

How would you implement it though? It's not like NPC's will open the door for you. Homes are in a different cell, so you can't have any sort of seamless transition between the exterior and the interior. Do you knock and hear a clicking unlock sound when they want you to come in? Does someone shout "Come in!" if they're home? How do you determine the voice to say it? What if the homeowner in question is standing right outside, but wouldn't normally mind if you go into their home while they're right there? What sort of bugs are likely to arise with this system?

Things to consider.

Like others have mentioned, Todd did say that NPC's who have befriended you won't mind if you show up at their homes late at night. He forgot to mention if you could simply enter their house, or if you'd have to break in. I'd like to see a knocking system implemented, but it's important to consider that it's not as easy as knocking on a door.

Has it been confirmed that houses are in different cells?

if it has, then a viable way of having that would be just hearing a come in voice, or a go away voice.

if they are in the same cell it is as easy as knocking.
