Doors...

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 1:20 am

Ok, so I gather that houses etc will still be 'cells', i.e you open the door and it loads and you magically appear indoors, but has anyone heard anything about internal doors?

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is my main source of inspiration here. How about the door open close mechanism on internal doors that is based on directional pressure from the mouse / jostick?

For those of you who have never heard or or played this game just simply youtube it and you'll see what I mean. it's so immersive!!

What do you guys / gals think?

P.S I'm so psyched about Skyrim that I installed Daggerfall recently, and loved it!!

*shrugs* part of that is to add a extra level of scare, in Skyrim a door is a door, I just open and go threw it, I would only find it annoying it takes time to open a door by holding a button and moving it manually.

How about the same "activate" function that opens "interior-to-exterior" doors, so that some players don't end up confused going "Okay, now which function do I use to open this kind of door again?" ;)

Hmmm good point Ralos, but what is to stop Skyriim having such immersive gameplay also? I sure as hell find Daggerfall dungeons scary, so why couldn't this work in Skyrim?

Obviously i'd prefer my suggested method for external doors also, but I gather the engine will not be capable of this, or at least for performance issues it is not used?

Jim Morrison in Skyrim! Yes... Oh wait what?

Na, bit to time comsuming. BGS will not even put spears in game, doubt they will take time out of their schedule to do this.

yeah...but Amnesia is built to be scary all the time, in a sandbox game like Skyrim, opeing door that way in a nice, comfy inn is more annoying then anything.

This would definitely make dungeons a lot scarier. However, I'd imagine if I was slowly opening a door and I suddenly saw a zombie charging at me, I would slam the door shut before I do anything else.

Do we know for sure that it's not already in though?

...and seriously, who uses spears?! lol. I'd prefer a flail but a stick with a pointy end?

I like Amnesia's way of doing it too.. and it would work well with any kind of physics system.

The drawback is what Alois mentioned.. there'd be two ways of opening two kinds of doors now. I think that's a bit too much added confusion for a bit of added immersion!

A lot of people use and want spears. Just because you think it's stupid doesn't mean other people do.

I never said it was stupid, your words my friend.

I do concede however that it may have come across badly, so my apologies

I've spent half my life training with spears. I have always used them in roleplaying game (if they have them). The spear represents man's determination and perseverance. Every human feat is thanks in no small part to the spear.

It dominated war for +6,000 years. It's principle is thought in modern military academies. The superiority of the spear is recognize my any combatant worth his salt.

I'd like to know for definite that it isn't already in. I think as long as it's obvious what an external door is it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to ask the player to adjust

Ok, I have apologised in a previous post for the spear related sentence.

I'd like to get back on topic

Hmm, never played the Splinter Cell series. Did they implement doors in a similar way?

When the fuzz is after me I need to get through a door ASAP!

Edit: Totally offtopic but Id love to see spears implemented properly and not just tacked on with a sword animation. Though TBH Id rather see that kind of attention in say... a PS3 motion control arena gladiator kinda game.

Great idea! A pretty cool and immersive control system, and if you don't like it, they could always let us toggle it on/off in the options menu :P

Or, if you just want to rush through a door, there can be another button that allows you to just open it like in past games. Maybe by holding another button, so it becomes "high profile" like in AC?

Yeah ir is awesome isn't it! They were genius's to come up with it. When you are gently moving your mouse to open the door it seems to simple, like second nature, yet so powerful.

I like your idea of being able to toggle it in the options. I assumed they could deal it out to the consoles (I bought this laptop just for Skyrim, but I originally planned to play it on the PS3) via a gentle push of the anologue stick.

Yeah, I'm playing on 360 but I guess you'll need to hold down A (provided that is the door opening key), and as you hold it down, you just open it with the right anolog stick while walking through it with the left one. Or just A (hold) + left anolog stick. Then, after having opened it, you can walk through.

Edit: I just tried to visualize it with my controller, and I think it might work pretty good. When you release A, you release the door knob. Whatever momentum the door has at that moment determines which way it'll continue, so if you want, you can just hold a at a closed door, quickly pull the stick down/left and release A. The door will slam open violently.

I loved this feature in Amnesia. It would be a great addition for stealth types to reduce LOS and add well, a feeling of stealth. But I doubt it would be implemented since TES just doesn't have such a narrow focus on these details.

Right. I think I'll give a little more credit to the intelligence of the average gamer. Cell change door = activate, non-load doors = grab and move. Not so confusing me thinks... :whistling:
