Dosbox Daggerfall question

Post » Sat Apr 17, 2010 6:23 am

So as far as I can tell it installed well through dosbox. Should I be on the lookout for things that might tell me it's not installed well? I mean the game is running and all but idk if stuff can still be messed up.

Also is there a way of making the box where it runs a little bigger? =\

I also remembered my other question haha when I exit the game, how do I get back in? do I have to reinstall it every time I wanna play or what? sorry if it's a dumb question but im new to dosbox

ALT+ENTER will maximize the window to full screen.
To play the game, just enter the fall.exe z.cfg command again. No, you do not have to reinstall!

I exited and reopened it and I have an issue with the ingame mouse. For some reason when i click into the dosbox ingame the mouse wont move, its just sitting up on the upper left corner and i can only use the keyboard. Any ideas?

I don't use the .exe...

In the olden days of DOS you never typed ".exe" when running programs anyway. In fact I think the reason the program was named "fall" was so that you'd be seeing:

C:\DAGGER\fall

And you'd be like, "lololol it says Daggerfall".

Hit to lock down the mouse cursor.. I have that problem persistently, too, but it's covered..

(edit: using parentheses on button designations just doesn't look right, but I keep expecting the greather than/less than signs to cause HTML issues)

Have a new issue. Nothing big but just wondering, am I missing something or was there a cinematic intro in the beginning? I see the bethesda logo and then daggerfall logo and then it takes me to new game load game screen. Anyone got any input?

There is a cinematic intro, but you don't get it when you start the program. You see it when you create a new character and begin the game with him/her.

This is how I start Daggerfall (Don't know if there is an easier way, but it works):

Mount C C:/games -freesize 1000

C:

CD Dagger

FALL Z.CFG

If there is an easier way can someone tell me?

Nope. You got it down perfectly.

However, if you'll navigate to the bottom of dosbox.conf you may find a header:

[autoexec]

You can put DOSBox commands under it and those will be executed immediately when you start DOSBox - it's good to put your mounting command there, like mine:

[autoexec]
# Lines in this section will be run at startup.
mount C C:\DOSBox\games
C:\

Download D-fend

it's a front end for Dosbox. Makes things much easier.

Is D-fend the best front-end? I have been making different conf files for my Dos games, and I am starting to lose track of the files. ( My organization is a bit dis-organized:))

D-Fend is good for most games, but games such as Daggerfall where you tweak things and actually may want to execute some patches and stuff from the prompt should be run in DOSBox. Some games I've found can be configured perfectly in DOSBox but front-ends break them.

D-fend plays Daggerfall perfectly.

Set the command line to "C:\dagger\fall.exe" (or whatever path your executable is located in)
and the command parameters to "z.cfg" (the latest version of D-fend lets you put in the special "tweaks" you might wanna use in this field)

CPU core should be "dynamic" and cycles set to "auto"

Set the graphics for "double buffering" and "keep correct aspect" and possibly even "fullscreen 600X480"

Should run just fine.

You may need to change the path of the folder mounted for C: so that D-fend can find Daggerfall.

Then, you can right click on the Daggerfall profile in your D-fend menu and create a desktop shortcut so anytime you start DF from the desktop it loads up your dosbox with the appropriate settings and executes the game.

I've never had any problems running anything with D-fend. Takes a little tweaking to set up a profile that works for a game, but the same can be said for Dosbox. Once you get the hang of D-fend, though, you'll never wanna use vanilla dosbox again. I don't doubt that some games are better run under dosbox, but I've yet to come across anything I couldn't use D-fend for.

Yeah well, as I said, you may want to run some Daggerfall applications and stuff that must run from the prompt. I also think typing in the prompt is more fun and authentic. :)
