DOSbox keeps crashing when loading Daggerfall

Post » Sat Sep 04, 2010 5:07 pm

Daggerfall was working fine yesterday, but when I try to load the game I get an error box pop up that says, Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library, "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information." I haven't done anything to my computer. I tried restarting it, that didn't work. I logged off it was fine, when I logged on today it gave that message.

Huh? Are you using DOSBox or launching the game through Windows?

About the only thing I can think of to recommend at the moment is to apply Windows updates and reinstall the Visual C++ runtime libraries (you can find these on Microsoft's site). Failing this, reinstall DOSBox. If none of that works post again and we'll see if we can figure something else out.

You might want to further describe how you're using DosBox because DosBox doesn't need those libraries...

Ok, I re-installed dosbox, updated all microsoft files, ran RegCure for errors but I am still getting the runtime c++ errors every time I try to load Daggerfall. Here is how I load it:

mount c c:/dosgames
C:/
CD C:/DAGGER
C:/DAGGER>FALL Z.CFG

The first day this is how I ran it and it worked, now all i get is the error box. I don't have any other games to test, daggerfall is the only one. Not sure what to do.

Post your system specs and what version of Windows you're running. Frankly I don't know how they'd help but at this point they can't hurt.

This may sound strange, but when was the last time you defragmented? I've seen fragmented hard drives cause really weird program errors. If you're running Vista, assume that you've never done it, because the defragment program that's packaged with Vista svcks.

Also FYI, your slashes are backwards (should be c:\ vs c:/).

The defragmenter in Vista is literally useless. Google "Defraggler" and use that instead.

Are there any simple frontends for DosBox?

VDMsound works perfectly by creating a shortcut with all preferences saved - I don't want any features, just a dirt-simple launcher.. I keep installing strange things which do strange things under the assumption that I want to do more than simply play the old games.

Grr. Any VDMS-style frontends available, please? :)
