DOSBox

How come when I do to that mount rubbish, it says the directory doesn't exist? I'm pretty certain it does. Plus, how on Earth do you use it? I've read many guides, but none of them seem to make sense to me... I've downloaded dosbox, and arena, and put a file called DOS in my games folder, and inside the dos folder is Arena... I don't get it one little bit. Are there any other emulators, that are GOOD?

The best thing you can do for yourself is to get on the official DOSbox site, and read up on how the program works. If you're having trouble following the directions in the stickies, then understanding what each command is supposed to do will help you get it running. Following instructions with no clue as to what you're actually doing is generally a bad idea ;) Attacking the problem educated and informed is much better.

Remember that these are old games, and getting old games to run on new computers requires a good bit of computer know-how.

Did you switch over to the proper drive after mounting? Is the name of the folder you're trying to access more than 8 characters long (in this case, a name like "dosboxing" should be typed in as "dosbox~1")? Perhaps you could re-type what you type in dosbox to give a better picture of where you may be going wrong?

I'm unaware of any other good emulator. There's Microsoft's Virtual PC, but it's more of a hassle to set up and from what I've heard won't help compatibility as much as Dosbox (due to not simulating different, simpler processors than what you actually have).

Since it's a DOS emulator, it helps a lot if you have DOS knowledge. And games were much harder to get to run back then than they are today, even if DOSBox makes it easier in many ways.

In any case, it would help if you tell us exactly what you're doing with DOSBox, and how you enter the commands and so on.

And yeah, there are other emulators aswell, but they require that you own DOS and they are harder to use.

What I don't get is why can I use cmd and run other games like Duke Nukem and Carmageddon, but not Arena?

That's become DOS is a complex piece. It could be hell to configure DOS for a few specific games back in the days. It's much easier to use DOSBox than it was to use DOS back in the days.

Also, Windows XP (I assume you're using XP) have a DOS emulator of it's own (sort of) called ntvdm.exe which is run automatically for 16-bit software and isn't very compatible with the real DOS. So if some DOS software works fine, it's no guarantee that other DOS software will work fine, and the Soundblaster emulation offered by XP isn't that great either.

I'll just forget about trying to run in on my pc, then. Was it ever for the old Amiga? I swear I saw an rpg that reminded me of the Elder Scrolls somewhere...

Nope, Arena was never released for the Amiga.

No, TES has never been for the Amiga. Ever. Especially not Oblivion.

Google does not exist and you can't actually search for this information. These are not the droids you're looking for.

It's easier to configure the EMS memory and so on than just double-click on the game icon? :P

Especially Ultima 7 was a pain to get to run, and I don't think many would be able to get it to run today if they tried on a real DOS computer.

Ultima 7 was the bane of my existence. I have fond (not) memories of memmanager.

Where I lived I didn't have much to do, so playing around with my fathers computers was one of the things I did the most. Which also my brother did, who is the person that taught me everything, and after a few times the EMS just became routine, though I rarely had to touch it, because most things seemed to work by it self, the things that didn't work right away wasn't really a problem, as it was just stapled in to my brain (I did a few mistakes at first, which caused some trouble, so my brother ran me through it 5 times a day for a week until, so it was pretty simple after that).

Oh, I don't have any problems with DOS either. It was my primary OS for a number of years and I played around with it quite a bit aswell.

I just find it strange (and surprising) you find it more simple to deal with than DOSBox. There's no RAM config complications, no need for any mouse DOS driver, no need for MSCDEX, no need for VESA drivers, no need for config.sys or any of that sort. In many cases one just have to mount the drive(s), and run the game. But each to his own :)

Or you can just make a shortcut to DOSBox, change the target of the shortcut by adding the link to your game's executable and (so long as the config/ini files are set correctly, running games this way mounts the game's directory to C:\) away you go.

Easy as 1, 2.

Ultima VII. No, no no! I refuse to play that in anything but Exult. DOSBox even has issues when I attempt to run it for me. That game is cursed when you're trying to set it up.

Sorry to be mean...

But if you cant figure out how to use DOXBox within the first day of having it maybe DOS games arn't for you :)

Here, prettend you downloaded the Game 'Fifth Fleet'

Ok so in c:\ you made a file called games and you placed the Fifth fleet game in there, but called the folder 'Fleet'

C:\games\Fleet

So in dosbox it would be like

z:\>Mount c: c:\games
z:\>Drive C:\ is now mounted as blah blah blah
Z:\>C:\
C:\>cd\Fleet
FLEET>FLEET (Because Fleet is the .exe file

I used fleet as an example game. hope it helps

XD Coarse i guess i could have just told you how i run Arena through Daggerfall cus thats what your trying to run! XD
