Dosbox won't play Daggerfall

Post » Fri Nov 19, 2010 1:48 pm

I reaaaalllly want to play Daggerfall, but it just won't work on Dosbox for me. I have tried it on 4 different computers. 1 XP pc, 3 vista Pcs and it's the same. I follow the guide and it begins to load, apparently.

It says FALL at the top of dosbox, but the screen just stays black, indefinitely. I left it running for 1/2 and hour and its the same! On all 3 PCs. I have no idea what is causing this..

I got it to work with VDMsound on the XP machine, but climbing and some other functions do not work correctly with it..

Daggerfall just seems like 100% pure win to me, but I can't play it.

Seems like you installed Daggerfall wrong or something.

Press alt+enter.

That won't help one bit.

Strange. I don't see how switching between a window and fullscreen would fix an issue like that.

If it's something to do with his graphical configuration it could.

Yo, duders, are you getting at least to the beth movie? If you click your mouse to skip it it could cause problems, use spacebar to skip it, then press ctrl+f10 to lock you mouse once the load/start/exit screen shows up.

Wait, I followed the tutorial to the letter and it works!!!! My prayers have been answered!

Now to find a tutorial for assassins.

edit: Oh crap.. I tried playing DF again, and now it does the same damn black screen! The beth movie doesn't even appear.

Hm Fullscreen did make it work, thanks.

Hell yea :D

If you have problems because the game isn't loading a savefile, just try switching between full screen and window mode.

I also get the black screen, and I can't get it to work properly.

I've done as explained http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=479044&st=0&p=6877868&#entry6877868 except for the install, as I already have a patched install that runs under WinXP, except that I can't get the mouse to respond in a timely fashion and the sound stutters. Essentially, you can install DF by moving a complete, patched, install dir to another place and editing z.cfg to match the new location. Unless I'm mistaken.

All I get is a black screen. I've tried Alt+Enter, hitting the spacebar, Ctrl+F10, clicking the mouse. Nothing works.

I'm starting dosbox using a .bat file with the command: dosbox -conf Daggerfall.conf
Daggerfall.conf is a copy of the default config from DosBox 0.72 with the following changes:
memsize=40 (was 16)
keyboardlayout=dk (to use my danish keyboard)
and at the end, after [autoexec]:
MOUNT C C:\Spil\TES\Dagger
C:
FALL.EXE Z.CFG

I'm using WinXP Pro with SP3
I should probably add that I use two monitors. But that hasn't stopped other games from running with DOSBox.

Could the problem be whatever version of DOSBox you are running? Mine works fine on 0.72.

Its me once more and this is really the answer to all of this problem
to get rid of the blackscreen load up dosbox
then type
mount c c:\
enter
c:
enter
cd dagger
enter
fall.exe z.cfg
enter
spacebar (may need to do it a few times)
then
ctrl f10 (once loaded)
and to make it full screen type alt
enter.

Now to find a tutorial for assassins.

Wax some punks in a podunk village. Join Dark Brotherhood. Join Mage's Guild. Pump Illusion to 55. Become Enchanter in Mages Guild. Enchant an item to increase Stealth when worn. Master Dark Brotherhood. There's your tutorial.

But for real, you may want to make a custom variant of the default assassin class and replace the weapon skills you won't use - such as blunt weapon and axe - with skills like Illusion or Mysticism (Improved Invisibility is really, really good and Mysticism helps for using recall and soul trap). Of course, something like 1xINT for spell points helps if you're going the magic route.

Also, ALWAYS use a bow for the free backstabs. I beat the game a couple months ago with a level 18 assassin and it was by far my most successful character... Although it just dawned on me you probably have no idea what I'm talking about since it's your first time playing. Ahh, you'll figure this crap out sooner or later anyway.
