Is Dovakiin mute?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 8:11 am

I haven't seen anything about this yet, but I wonder if the player will actually be voiced this time. I would hope that with the new real-time dialogue system they would think about having voice acting for the player character. I mean the mags that saw the demo said they saw the dialogue system in action, so I'm just wondering if any of them mentioned if the pc speaks or is mute.

Honestly I'm not going to be disappointed either way, and the amount of voice recording it would require is pretty huge. But I wouldn't mind even just one (good) recording for each gender.

Not talking about grunts or dragon shouts. I'm talking about actual dialogue, considering there is now a real time dialogue system.

Doubt it. Many would consider it subtracts too much from the role play experience.

I'd imagine the Dragon Shouts actually may have some voicework for the player. Effectively being the first game ever, where the player can learn and speak a new language at will.

Well, I heard him shout "Fus Roh Dah" in the trailer so I don't thnk he's mute. I doubt he's going to be fully voiced though, I prefer voicing my own character anyways :)

Pretty sure he's mute. Has been so before and I think it will stay that way.

I like it. It feels as if it reminds me of it's actually me playing my character.
In Bethesda's games its often like that. You have to fill out the blanks yourself. This also goes for other things than the player's voice, just look at Morrowind's main story :)
Same also goes for how we know nothing about ourselves when we start the game.

We will most likely only hear our player's grunts and panting sounds and dragon shouts.

I hope, at most, my character has the usual grunts and such and that the dragon shouts are a sort of asixual dragony growl/roar.

They better not make my character fully voiced. That may work in a game where who your character is is decided for you. In a game that where you create your own character, though, a fully voiced character is a horrible thing.

No, or he wouldn't be able to shout.

Unless Beth drops a bombshell at E3, then for the most part yes. Besides the shouts and the grunts I doubt he/she will speak.

Honestly I don't care that much either way, but it seems odd that so many people saw a demonstration of the dialogue system and no one mentioned if the player has voice acting or not. You'd think someone would note that as the characters walk down the street only one of them is actually speaking.

That said, I completely understand the role playing view, but disk space is a terrible excuse imo.

It would really be a waste of space IMO. It's just something that doesn't fit into an RPG where you choose the main character's race, gender, name, etc

I remembering reading about the player's voice in an article or something. And said that it assumes the player says yes or asks something. Not a big deal to make of though. It's something good anyway I think.

I would love a return to a dialogue system like Morrowind had, and then there would be tons of space for other things. But the one sided dialogue is just awkward

The previews did not mention the player speaking so that pretty much confirms that only the NPCs talk as usual.

Aside from dragon shouts and the typical grunts, I really hope not. This is my character. The last thing I want is people wanting what BioWare seems to be considering good role-playing... by making my character not my character at all and producing interactive movies rather than games.

It worked really well in Mass Effect which is a great role playing game.

Gawd I hope not. Nothing more annoying than trying to roleplay a character when you're stuck with a voice chosen by someone else that doesn't fit what you think that character should sound like.

Except maybe having multiple voice choices for your character, and none of them fit....what a waste of disk space and voice recording time.

That's just my opinion, of course, but Bethesda are the last, great RPG makers who actually make... games, in my opinion. I hate what BioWare's done. They then spread that infectious disease known as player character voice acting to Dragon Age, and I don't have any desire to play what they essentially must believe is the replacement for Baldur's Gate IV. Disgusting...

I played Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, and the character constantly talking gets quite annoying.

Fixed.

Also, just because it worked well in one game doesn't mean it works well in all games.

And record every player dialog for every race and gender combinations, not to mention if we get multiple voice actors for different races this time...
Yeah, not gonna happen.

Also, dialog was always vague in TES games, you rarely chosen the exact words that you said, instead you've got keywords.

Yeah, and I think most people agree that ME's dialogue system was significantly better than DA's dialogue, simply because the one-sided conversations are awkward. It's not like ME had no choice in what you say, an in fact the things you say can actually have a big impact on the game.

Anyway, I just think the best options would be full voice acting or a return to full-text dialogue which has a lot of benefits (esp. RP benefits). The half-way thing was just always awkward, and made me miss Morrowind's dialogue.

I guess the effort to implement a real time dialogue system just seems pretty silly with no player voice acting imo.

Agreed, I very much prefer a silent protagonist. Otherwise I will just get annoyed and think "hey, my character doesn't sound like that!" Even with multiple voices in NWN and Dragon Age, it's rare that I feel that any of them suit the character I just made.

No, god no. I'm just not a fan of the Bioware "You make the character but it belongs to us because we gave it a voice and it's looks!"
