Down with the Sickness

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:24 am

One of the things I always thought made TES interesting was the fact that you could catch diseases that effected your attributes. The problem is that I often didn't realize I had a disease in the first place. After all, it's kind of easy to miss the "You have contracted Serpiginous Dementia" message while you're in the middle of fighting three headless zombies... and if you don't look at your stats for a while you could go around with a disease for quite a while before realizing you had one.

So...

I think most diseases should have very visible cosmetic effects on your character. You could become covered in a rash, or zits, or boils. You could ooze mucus from your nose. You're eyes could get all pink and gunky. Your skin could go all pale like you're anemic... or yellow like you have jaundice. You could get dark circles under your eyes. You could sweat profusely ... the list goes on and on. Additionally, some diseases could make you cough, or sneeze, or have a raspy wheeze with each breath. You could occasionally vomit  , or have a bout of tremors.

Of course, some diseases could be much more covert and not have any visible symptoms at all.

Anyway. Just throwing the idea out there.

If I can heal the sick of the world with my magic, yes. Would be fun if the homeless and sick were sad rotting things begging by the streets.

It's cool and all but what if then the girls in the bar won't show me the boobs because I'm disgusting?

Of course NPCs would show all the symptoms too. You could go around coughing on everyone and start an epidemic. LOL

That would be pretty fun. And I still wouldn't give them a dime. That's just how selfish my assassin is.

I think that diseases should have cosmetic and audible effects. However they need to be curable. If my character get's a disease for some reason, I don't want her to look like a pile of [censored] for the whole play through.

Yes and no. I don't want disgusting boils and things like that, but some extended effects other than just draining skills and things like that would be a welcome addition. I always thought that instead of a disease draining your sneak skill, instead you will occasionally cough and if you're sneaking near someone, it will alert them to your presence.

Some visual effects would be fine. Paleness, maybe slight rashes and things like that, not overly disgusting things though. :P

Oh definitely! Diseases should be curable, but it would be cool if certain diseases could only be cured by certain ingredients... or could only be cured at a one specific shrine. It would kinda turn curing your disease into a mini-quest.

Assuming they wouldn't overdo it, it would be really funny lol. Sad rotting things.

I like that disease seems to be curable on a level far superior to modern medicine through magic or alchemy, which make sense considering the world of TES has been civilized for longer than in the real world. I can't say I'd like gross symptoms.

Great idea. Never really considered it. How awesome would it be to see NPCs who look like they have leprosy.

I hope diseases are more prevalent in Skyrim, and this is honestly one of the few ideas that I think the devs should truly take note of

i think it would also be cool to see wounds become infected if not treated.... they could start to turn red and get veins coming out of them.... would kinda be extreme but i would like to see gangrene set up and limbs turn black and fall off. but i doubt that would be put in.

Well if there's no attributes anymore diseases must be just cosmetic now?

This is genius. You deserve a prize. :ribbon: I wonder why I haven't thought of this before...

But if you see diseased beggars, wouldn't you wonder why they haven't rejoiced (through faith, your afflictions are banished)? Or maybe they live near the chapel of Dibella, and she just tells the poor ugly whelps to get out of her temple.

Pleeeeeease, Bethesda, implement this.

P.S. Dragonborn1, attributes still exist.

How about a disease that causes chronic flatulence... How would that effect your chances with the barmaid?

I voted "Yes". All good ideas about how it could be shown to the player as well. But I'd even settle for a more blunt solution:

  • Vision slowly becomes blurry.
  • Vision slowly becomes shaky.
  • Vision slowly becomes discolored.
  • Vision slowly becomes tunneled.

Each disease could have different visual symptoms, and contracting different diseases simultaneously could then have some combination; e.g., a disease that makes vision blurry and another that makes vision discolored could produce vision that is both blurry and discolored, which indicates that you've got a lot of curing to do.

The reason why I played the MW main questline for my characters... I wanted to be a corprus beast... why didn't they make it effect your apperence...
most diseases shouldn't have that terrible apearence changes though, and they should start with barely any effects and then slowly larger attribute drains and apearence changes...
but if they added visuals to diseases then magic and combat must also leave visable damafe unique to each weapon/spell effect...

I loved the Corprus storyline in Morrowind, but I wished I could see the physical effects on my character. It's a great idea - though I'm not sure how workable it would be.

I would say the thought (given the title of your thread) is quite Disturb-ing :)

nice idea, I approve.

Also while on the subject of getting diseases, please for the love of good let weapon/shield block protect us from getting diseases, or at least give us a X% disease protection. I hated the fact my melee character has to run like a girl every time he see a vampire or a zombie.
