Downgraded 1st person?

Post » Mon Aug 23, 2010 8:27 am

They said the new 1st person wouldn't have a hud. Will there be an option to have one? Won't not having a hud make it svck? it sounds like 1st person won't be as good as 3rd. In oblivion, i only used 1st person, i couldn't stand 3rd. Won't this force a lot of 1st person players to use 3rd?
and yes, i know this has probably been asked before, but it didn't show up in the search so...

HUD only shows up during combat, or possibly on command. Doesn't have anything to do with first or third person.

Not the word I would use. :stare:

I see no problem with a lack of a HUD. I play both anyway.

I actually think Oblivion's UI was pretty unintrusive. I mean, you could be playing http://aionicthoughts.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/worstui.jpg :P

No hud has been one of the better pieces of news to come out - for me anyway. Played a number of hudless games and they feel much more immersive.

Not having a HUD won't make it svck, nor will it make 3rd person better (IMO of course).

IIRC they said the HUD was optional. Meaning you get a choice as to whether you want it up.

I prefer 1st person and am quite thrilled that there won't be a hud. To me it will be much more immersive. With the NPC's giving better directions and pointing you in the right direction, I think the hud won't be near as necessary as it was in previous games.

I haven't seen anything to confirm that 3rd person will have a hud, nor have I seen anything confirming that a hud won't be an option

Wow, that hurts my eyes even to look at the pic. Would hate to be playing healbot with the UI like that lol.

Anyhoo, I typically played Oblivion in 3rd person as thats my preferred playstyle (or viewstyle? Eh). I only really switched to 1st now and again, namely when searching houses/etc for items to loot and for when I would be running about with my bow out. That said, I played Fallout 3 mostly in 1st person because of the AWFUL "over the shoulder 3rd per. view". Still can't believe they put that into the game, was horrid. I really, really hope they don't ruin Skyrim's 3rd person view in a similar fashion. Or at least let us choose an option as to where the camera is placed.

The HUD still exists. It comes up during combat so that you can monitor your health, stamina and magicka. And I'm sure that there will be a toggle option to turn in on and off in non-combat situations.

Guess I'll toggle it on, then DISABLE THAT HOTKEY. Sounds good.

I play almost exclusively in first person, and I won't miss the HUD. It's only useful in combat, I don't need to be walking through the city with my HUD telling me that I'm at 100% health. If I really need to check while I'm not in combat I can bring up the journal ( or whatever the in-game menu is called). I think it's for the better.

Edit: The OP has an incredible name

So long as there's a compass to clue me in on which direction I'm pointing I'll be happy. Not the quest compass, of course, just a regular one (because I svck at knowing north, south, east, or west without one). I sometimes have trouble finding my way with one, in Morrowind for example, I once ended in Vivec instead of Balmora. Yeah. I'm that directionally challenged, and it can be so much fun.

There will probably be a button (probably A, on the Xbox, activate on the PC) that will cause the HUD to appear for a brief time. In addition, I would not doubt seeing additional options for HUD fade time, opacity, and whether it fades at all.

I also want to add that I'd like the combat status change a bit. What I mean is, I don't want to be considered "In combat" just because a hostile NPC is nearby. If someone is trying to sneak up on me, they can't. The music changes, I can't fast travel etc. I don't think "in combat" status should begin until either I attack, or something else attacks me. I'd also like to see NPC's and creatures actually flee from me. It'd be nice if they actually showed some concern for their own lives.

Try a game without a HUD that's first person, it gets you svcked into it sooo much more then something with random symbols all over the screen...you feel less like the terminator and more like an adventurer set into a reality of magic and dragons.

Wow. I can't imagine playing Morrowind or Oblivion completely in first-person. I think it would be horrible.

I typically switch between first and third person at will. I'll go to first-person if I'm in a one-on-one fight, assuming it's not against an opponent that is quick and moves around a lot, or I might go first-person to survey the area more closely, or while in a narrow passageway so the camera isn't shakign around in the terrain, but otherwise, it's third-person all the time. I like being able to look at my character and I like the larger scope that I'm given. I want to be able to see what's beside and behind my character.

Never utilizing third-person mode is just silly in my opinion.

In oblivion and FO3 i could only ever stand using 3rd person for when i was running around. For combat , talking to people etc i would use 1st person. The weird sliding walking thing Oblivion had going on in 3rd person was off-putting.

when fighting and actually interacting, first person. but when just walking from point a to b I like to walk in third.
I wonder if health and magicka will still be visible or hidden most of the time along with the rest of the hud. it would svck not being able to know if you were close to dying or not, or if your almost out of magika

I'm pretty sure I've heard a HUD pops in when it's needed, like it combat, just like farcry 2

however, I think it's possible to toggle it on permanently
but I forget where I've read that =P
