Downloading Daggerfall

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:37 pm

I have been doing some reading about Daggerfall, and I have found out that it is now abandonware (which, to my best understanding is legal to download for free) so does anyone know where I can download it

Not as far as I know. It would have gone off like a bomb on these forums if DF ever became abandonware.

"Abandoware" does not exist in the law, at least in U.S or in France ( I don't know for other countries who each have their own local laws ).

Abandonware is more, less or not at all tolerated, ignored for old games that are not sold anymore because the rights owner does not really care about them financially. Still it's illegal.

The only "originally copyrighted" game that you can download must be around 70 years old ( the duration varies depending of the country ), when then it falls into the public domain.

As for Daggerfall, until Zenimax/Bethesda states that it can be downloaded for free. It's illegal, and debating about it is prohibited here :)

(which, to my best understanding is legal to download for free)

This is incorrect. There are some games (TES Arena, for example) that have been released for free by the developer/publisher of the game. However most abandonware sites define the term as games no longer available for purchase or no longer supportered - which is just a dressed up version of software piracy. In fact many of these sites will admit to this, but tend to bury such discussion far away from the main page because they don't like admitting that it's really just piracy.

So while Bethesda has released Arena on to the web, they have not released Daggerfall and downloading a copy remains illegal. If you're interested in playing the game I'd suggest checking out EBay and similar sites as they often have a few copies knocking about and sometimes you can get really good deals.
