If you own a retail copy, there is no legal way to download, I believe. And we will not discuss or support illegal activities on these forums.

Diskdrive? You mean CD/DVD-reader/writer. The last time that I have seen 8-inch flexible floppy disks was like in ancient Rome when Ceasar was still alive! :P

Let me get this straight: you have FO2 on CDROM, no player and you want to make a copy to your laptop's hard drive or download it? Right?

Hard copying can be done. (Not illegal IMO since you own the game already, as long as you don't give it to a third party)

First off - find a PC with a CD/DVD reader and make a copy of the game to an external HD, USB-stick or via a network then copy it to your laptop.

Here are the most important files you'll need from the CDROM for FO to work:

* fallout2.___ located on [CDROM]:\program\win\fallout2.___ (1.162KB)
* master.dat located on [CDROM]:\master.dat (318MB)
* critter.dat located on [CDROM]:\critter.dat (150MB)
* data folder located on [CDROM]:\data folder (74.8 MB)

I don't know about the downloading stuff, but I bet there are legal channels to download it from.
You'll have to pay for it even when owning a copy i think. From what I've heard it doesn't cost too much btw, like 5 or 10 bucks.

Cheers!

I think it's just a poor choice of words :)

Rhein1023, if you want to move it from one computer to another that should be fine - just make sure you're still doing an install like Joe Piler outlines. If you install the game one one computer and then move those folders to the other computer you won't have the necessary information in the registry.

If you are asking about downloading the game from the internet then owning a copy doesn't permit you to download a free copy. There are places to buy it but that seems like a poor option since you already own it.

What kind of lap top doesnt have a CD drive? What kind of any computer doesn't... Unless you mean floppy drive, because I dont even think they make those anymore. Though, they do make the plugs still. (at least on full/mid tower PC's, not laptops)

Maybe those modern really flat notebooks. I saw them a couple of times in a store, only a couple of mm thick, hard to fit a CDROM drive into that, I guess.

FO2 wasn't released on floppy as I recall, too much data for a 1.44 MB diskette even the 150/200 MB ones. The master file = 318MB.
Maybe FO1 the DOS-version was. Got them both on CDROM however.

Speaking of ripping, you can also make a full copy to an iso file btw and run it using a virtual drive.

Ah yes indeed. Learned something new today. Those flat things do not interest me that much anyway, maybe easy to travel with. My laptop is one hell of a big fat momma I cannot stuff into a purse that easy, eject tray included. :P

No I was wandering off blabbering about the size of my own laptop.

I dunno what kind of laptop Rhein1023 has bought, maybe an asus eee thingy (better check your specs then)... It hasn't got a CD-player that's for sure. :)

If you install the game one one computer and then move those folders to the other computer you won't have the necessary information in the registry.
For Fallout 1, Joe Piler's method is the way to go. Install it and copy the entire folder onto a flash drive. The Registry bit can in this case be ignored. (For uninstall, just delete the folder.)

This should work for Fallout 2 as well ~if there is no CD check ( :hehe: I don't remember)

Fallout and FO2 rely on configuration files found in the install directory (Fallout was also a DOS application as well as Win32).

One thing to remember... You must either install to an identical directory when you copy the folder, or you must edit the game's configuration files to point to thefolder where you've installed it (or it won't find its DAT files).

If the download option is what is wanted (or if FO2 demands the CD); A downloadable retail version can be bought for $6 from vendors like GOG.

I know you already own it, but if you don't want to go to all the trouble of installing it on a separate computer and ripping the files, etc. then Good Old Games, or Gog.com has both FO1 and FO2 for sale for $6 each. As an added bonus, all GOG versions of games are updated to run on modern operating systems like XP, Vista, and Windows 7. They include all the manuals and extras for the games as well in PDF form.

If you get it from there it is just a quick download and simple install.

Regardless of what you do, I hope you get it working on your laptop. It's still a lot of fun to play through.

Netbooks. They're quite popular and I'm amazed that so many of you aren't able to think of any laptops that wouldn't have disc drives!

Yeah, I'm sure a machine made 10+ years after the original game came out will struggle to handle it.
No, F1 and F2 should run just fine, the spec required for them is so minimal. I ran them on a laptop that was old in 2000 without any problems.

Personally if I felt that downloading it wasn't an option, I would take one of my copies of F2 and make an ISO of it. I would then place that ISO on a flash disk or external hard disk and plug it into the machine. I would then mount that ISO using a suitable virtual drive program such as http://www.daemon-tools.cc/eng/home and install as normal.
