Downloading game to hard drive (xbox)

Post » Thu Oct 06, 2011 5:38 am

Hi,

I must confess I don't really understand fully what the implications are, or the benefits, to downloading the game to the hard drive of my xbox 360. Can anybody help me with a few questions?

- If I download the game to the hard drive, will it run faster with less load times.
- Will I ever need the game disc again?
- Will the initial download take a long time (further delaying me starting the game!)
- Is it generally a good idea to do this?

Many thanks,
Rich

1. Yes, it will run faster, that's why I installed Fallout 3 and New Vegas for less crashes and faster loading times.
2. Yes, for some reason you will still require the games disc in order to play.
3. The installation of the game will take a while, so it will delay you in playing Skyrim.
4. If you want Skyrim to have faster loading times and less crashes, then go for it.

1. The game will run faster. It makes for better graphics in some cases. It also makes the hum from the Xbox 360 during playtime significantly quieter.

2. Yes, you still need the game disc to play the game.

3. The initial download does take some time.

4. I'd say if you play the game enough, go ahead and let it download. If you don't want to delay your starting the game, then you can play the game until you have to fall asleep (about 30 hours of playthrough, if you wake up and play it almost immediately), and let it download to your hard drive while you sleep. I'm pretty sure this is what I will be doing.

As I dont have a 360 or PS3 myself I can't be certain but, hdd's read much faster than CDs so you should notice considerably faster load times. Also moving the many GBs of data will take a little bit, but not too long. If you intend to play a game for a very long time(skyrim perhaps) it would probably be advantageous to put it on the harddrive.

Has anyone else noticed that if they download Oblivion to their hard drive it actually runs worse?

- Yes it will run faster, load times will be lower, and if you scratch it some how you can still play. [Circle Scratch + DL to harddrive = Still Playable]
- Yes you will still need the game disc, this is only because so if somebody were to rent the game they can't just D/L to harddrive and never have to buy it in the first place.
- The Initial download will take maybe an 1-1 1/2 hour(s), The longest D/L time I've had was with Saints Row 2 and it was about an hour.
- In my opinion it's a great idea to do it, because if you tilt your xbox and it circle scratches the disc or something else happens to it, you can just put the disc in, go to your game library and play. :) [ Though sometimes it may say disc is unreadable, just open and close the tray a few times to get it to work ;) ]

It's because they (Microsoft) dont want ten people to use the same disc to install the game to their xbox, thus not needing to buy the copy.

3. The installation of the game will take a while, so it will delay you in playing Skyrim.

It only took me about forty five minutes to install all three discs of rage. Skyrim's one disc won't take very long to install.

I had to install it since my disk so was so scratched up. I haven't noticed a difference.
