CS Drag & Drop to object menu not working in Windows 10

Post » Thu Aug 20, 2015 7:27 am

Has anyone else had a problem dragging and dropping files from the Data Files folder into the object menu in the CS? It stopped working for me as soon as I upgraded to Windows 10.

I should probably mention my install is in the Programs (x86) folder and I had to change security permissions on it just to be able to copy files without it complaining about needing Administrator permission (even though I AM the Administrator). If this is what's causing the issue (someone with a different install configuration on Windows 10 might have to see if it's working for them), how do I safely move my install OUT of the Programs (x86) folder?

I just did this earlier in the day on WIndows 10 with no problem. Are you sure that the file names were not too long?

Ah yes, I've run into that problem before. Definitely not the case this time though. The one I was trying to drop was called st_plank and it sat in a folder (in Data Files\Meshes, to be sure, because I know drag & drop doesn't work outside it) with only two letters as well.

If you're not having the same problem, it must be something to do with my configuration somehow. I'm have no idea how to fix it though. Is your Morrowind install in the Progams (x86) folder? I'm sure I've read that can be a problem before, and it's currently the only idea I have.

All my modding installs are on my D:\ drive, so that might have some impact. Just to make sure I wasn't imagining things, I just tried it again and had no issues. So maybe your installation area could have an impact? Would be an interesting thing to verify at least.

I copied the entire Bethesda folder to a different file path, and I still couldn't Drag & Drop anything into the object menu, so it wasn't that.

But I figured it out! I tried running the CS from my Clean Install folder, dropped a single file into the Meshes folder, and dragging and dropping worked. So, I compared it to my normal install:

Turns out running it in Compatibility Mode is the problem. I unchecked Run as Administrator and Compatibility Mode for Win XP, and now the CS works fine. It's funny because the opposite was true in Win 7.

Oh, that's interesting. I'll try to remember that in case anyone else has the same issue. I'm glad that you were able to figure it out. Sorry I couldn't be more help!
