Dragon Age: Origin

Do you guys think people will lose interest in Oblivion and adding mods to it now that a very good RPG like Dragon Age: Origin is available?

The only thing I've heard about is that you have a lot of character customization, which with mods, is easily outdone for Oblivion. Though I will say, the Oblivion community won't likely die off until another Elder Scrolls comes out. :P

You sure? Depends on what category we're talking about. World? drastically different options? Story?

Oblivion most likely has a less linear world space, but the rest I'm not so sure about ( I only played a little bit of DA: O, but I've played lot's of other Bioware, Obsidan, and Western RPGs in general that are less linear than Oblivion... In some categories.)

The world and the local/side quests seem much less significant than in oblivion.

Even when another TES games comes out, Oblivion will still continue to be a viable game. There is still a fairly strong community for Morrowind, and while it declined some after Oblivion came out, it has not died, nor do I expect it to any time soon.

Do I think we will loose a fair few players and even some modders to Dragons Age: Origins.

Yes.

Why?

Because without even so much as a hint regarding a TES 5 and Oblivion being 4 years old, people are bound to look for something new and interesting. Like it or not the community has most definitely dwindled for want of a TES 5 announcement.

When Fallout 3 came out I expected quite a mass movement of modders to make the jump to that game. What I didn't realize at the time was that the fan base for Fallout and TES are, at the core, two very different things. So what actually happened was very few modders made the jump and most people played Fallout 3 then returned to the greener pastures (no pun intended) of Oblivion, myself included. Fallout brought its own fan base and continues to thrive with that and the few TES modders who did make the leap to the wastelands, permanently.

So from that perspective, TES players have had nothing new and heard nothing new for four years regarding a new game for them. Even as a die hard TES fan and avid modder I too am casting interested looks at Dragons Age, simply for want of a new medieval RPG. Something new to get excited about. When TES 5 is finally announced Oblivion will pick up with renewed interest and I bet even Morrowind will pick up...until then....Dragons Age all the way, and if it is what it purports to be you can bet quite a few will be leaping permanently.

Modable and overall good role playing games released after Oblivion:

- Neverwinter Nights 2
- - Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer
- - Neverwinter Nights 2: Storm over Zehir
- The Witcher
- Fallout 3
- Dragon Age: Origins

Not easily modable or overall average to "substandard" role playing games released after Oblivion:
- Gothic 3
- Risen
- DSA4: Drakensang
- Mass Effect
- Jade Empire
- Sacred 2
- - Sacred 2: Blood & Ice
- Two Worlds

I am not sure about anyone else here, but for me it's quite nice to play something other for a while, then go back to play and mod Oblivion. From the above games the Sacred 2 AddOn was the only one I haven't played, though I can't say that all of the others were really enjoyable. Most were, though.
I've played other games too since the release of Oblivion, and I'm quite sure that it won't be another game that will drive me away. See it like that: Sometimes playing other games can inspire you as a modder to new ideas, and you as a player may allow you to appreciate (modded) Oblivion more, without getting bored by it.

Wouldn't say the FO3 community is thriving, there's only maybe 15 people active nowadays.

Dragon Age: Origins doesn't have the same potential for customizability that Oblivion does. I'm sure people will mod it, and there will grow a nice community for that, but there's much more to do and play around with in Oblivion.

Fallout 3, while highly customizable, seems to largely attract gun enthusiasts. Also, I don't see it developing ongoing mod projects like Unique Landscapes or large-scale real estate changes like Better Cities. Fallout 3 could benefit from a lot of quest mods, but Oblivion lends itself to more involvement with npcs, puzzles, riddles, conspiracies, etc. I'm not sure FO3 is going to see anything like Heart of the Dead, for instance.

So, no real direct competition, so to speak, from those two games. Until TESV, I don't see this place going to pot.

Honestly I'd not expect DA:O to svck too many people away from Oblivion. While the game itself is really quite engrossing and has a lot of play options, I don't really see a lot of potential for modding there. The game world size is restrictive, far more so than Cyrodiil. There's also no sign of post-game play being possible. Unless Bioware pulls the same fast one Bethesda did with Broken Steel.

For myself, I doubt I'll even take another look at the game once I've finished off the second play through. The only truly interesting variations are the origin stories and those are all over and done with by the time you hit Ostagar.

I'm playing it. It's fun. But I see no signs that it will be anywhere near as moddable as Oblivion, which means I'll be playing Oblivion again soon enough.

There will still be Oblivion fanatics when ES V comes out, just like there are still Morrowind fanatics now.

Does this mean I will have trouble picking Oblivion back up if I put on too much weight? :)

I agree with this. :)

Anyway, when another game in a similar genre comes out, if the game does well, the forums usually end up with lots of new members requesting stuff from that game to be implemented somehow in Oblivion. Sometimes it's armor or a weapon that is requested, sometimes it's a skill or mechanic. I usually see a surge of renewed activity in the aftermath of another successful fantasy game, not a lull.

I must admit I am interested in dragon age, I used to mod Neverwinter Nights and am au fait with the bioware way of doing things, I also hear that the game is very good.
by the way the link to the morrigan website has nothing to do with said character, rather it is the name of the band I have been playing in for the last 25 years!

Oblivion has several things better than Dragon Age. You actually can WALK from Leyawiin to Anvil without the Fast travel map. You can't walk from Ostagar to Redcliff village in Dragon Age, however. Not much different from NWN or BG in that.

Morrigan doesn't approve of ANYTHING. Period. If she wasn't so funny I would have smacked her and sent her back to be

killed by Flemeth.
Plus, she's the only offensive mage you get too.
But I'm totally wrapped up in playing Dragon Age now. So I'm sure this community will miss my modding prowess.
Dragon Age will build it's own modding fanbase, but with the kind of game it is and the kind of engine it was made with, most major mods will be self sustained campaign mods. With Oblivion mods you can build giant fortresses and castles, mod in your own custom made weapons and even make yourself a cool looking little town. Dragon Age's strong point is the story telling and dialogue interactions. There will probably be more story driven mods for DA and that will probably draw a lot of writers. And Dragon Age now has it's own Nexus, courtesy of DarkOne. I think Dragon age will build it's own modding fanbase, but I don't think Oblivion will lose many modders because of it.
