Dragon Age: Origins, Awakening & DA2

Post » Sun Jun 06, 2010 4:04 pm

Just out of curiousity, is the isometric view in Origins available for console players? I don't want to play like that, but just for my nostalgic memories of Baldur's Gate, I really want to see it.

No, it isn't, for whatever stupid reason. Probably because they figured console players could not possibly ever want to get a wider look of the area, or survey the current battlefield. And now, if this is true of DA2, no one else does either.

No, I believe it only zoomed out so far, but always staying third-person

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=be3kKQCWi5o with some PC gameplay showing it.

Ah, yes. Hurray for that...

Why don't consoles have that, exactly? I think I might have actually used it. but now they're scrapping the PC's ability to do it, as well? Why take away options that are already very easily possible to implement?

No idea, but companies cut lots of corners to save as much as possible, and Bioware is EAs [censored] now.
I need to find an image it had EAs logo above Bioware, just with harbinger eyes and the "assuming direct control" quote.

if i recall correctly, the xbox was actually a port since this game was designed for the PC making it have some gameplay mess ups like the graphics for one. now, they want to focus on the console and the PC at the same time but with identical gameplay.

Did they make the same mess ups with the PS3 port?

From a Bioware dev

Hey folks,

Victor managed to hunt me down, and I wanted to clear up a few things with regards to what I'm seeing as the two major concerns on this thread.

First off, let's talk about the toolset issue. Obviously in this community there's going to be some concern that we wouldn't release a toolset, so let me clear the air a little: The tools we're using to make Dragon Age 2 are very, very close to the tools you guys have used to make your mods for DA:O. They're not identical, as we've made a few in-house improvements, but they're almost identical. As such, there isn't a new toolset to release, per se.

While we won't be releasing a toolset update in tandem with Dragon Age 2, we ARE investigating what it would take to update the community toolset to match ours, along with providing DA2 content in the future.

As to the subject of tactical view, I can confirm that we will not be doing a tactical view on consoles, though we are looking into some expanded party control that I think will make console players quite happy.

On the PC, however, we are still working with the camera to keep the key elements of the tactical experience there. I was actually playtesting some new camera code when Victor found me, in fact, so I can give you the latest news on that front.

While we likely won't pull as far up as we did in DA:O, I have always felt that the key to tactical play was actually freeing your camera from the character you're controlling to issue precise orders, which is what we're tuning now. So, this means you can still maneuver the camera around the battlefield and issue orders from a remote location, just as you could in Origins.

As you can probably tell from my phrasing, all of this is a bit in-flux right now, so things may change between now and ship, but I wanted to update you guys on the current direction of things.

Mike..

Looks like they'e not getting rid of iso view for PC's entirely, just changing it around a bit. Still...at least the claim they're looking to update the toolset gives me a slight bit of hope...

Okay BioWare, you saved your ass for now. I'll wait for more info on the toolset before I pre-order though.

Yes...for now...

Seems as thought DA2 has just been a constant stream of disappointments and attempts by Bioware/EA to remove everything I loved about Origins. :cold:

That was all so vague it could have meant anything! All they did was bounce the idea around without giving us any real solid base line comparison. I don't trust it, and this just makes me trust them less. It was clearly all jargon and rhetoric to say we can't really say anything so it may or may not be true and then they go on to tell us some undefined things which make it sound as though it is defined. Then at the end the biggest clue to this corporate band aid is the fact he mentioned it is in flux. Considering all the dancing I seen I'm going to lean on the side that what we heard is generally true. That there will be no top down view, and that there is going to be no editor release.

Really, guys? Really? REALLY?!? You're going to believe that BS? Keep in mind that that was the most vague "we're looking into it" style reply ever. They'll be looking into until they game is released and they've sold millions of copies. Ugh. Anyway, that's a whole another rant that I don't care to talk about right now.

What I want to talk about is EA. Yes, EA. Stop [censored] blaming them for all of Bioware's failures and shortcomings. Sure they're the "big bad publisher" and are probably responsible for a lot of failures, but not everything can be blamed on them- I'd go as far as to say that most things cannot be blamed on them. And remember, without their money, all those fancy graphics and voice overs you love wouldn't exist. I'm not defending anyone, I'm just saying that you shouldn't automatically deflect all blame from your favourite developer onto the publisher.

Anyway, I've been playing Baldur's Gate as of late (see what I did there?) and have come to the conclusion that Dragon Age is indeed the spiritual successor to it. In fact, it succeeds it far too well. I see now that the filler combat I've been complaining about was present since Bioware's humble beginnings. Now I'm not too far into it, so I shouldn't judge the storyline or characters just yet. Suffice it to say the game really reminds me of DAO.

Compare quality before and after EA got them, look at what EA dose, DAO was pre EA, awakening and DA2 after. I will blame EA, because its strange how after EA joins quality drops.
EA is bad, and just greedy, trying to get money anyway possible.

As both of these "new" pieces of info were contradicting what was stated in previews and interviews earlier, I'd say it's not "saving their ass" but "calling bull on that bad translation". ^_^

Hey guys, quick question, I've heard a lot that the PC version has an isometric camera view. Would anyone on the PC care to share with me a screenshot of what that looks like? In combat and just running around? Because if it's "too" isometric that may be a problem for me and my disliking of isometric games.

Kinda like this. http://www.landofwhimsy.com/funbag/dragonage-1.jpg

Isometric view is completely optional though, and you can do everything from "Kotor view" if you want to.

That was a really vague way of answering, especially about the toolset. The "along with providing DA2 content in the future" is interesting. The way I interpret things, it sounds like they want to water down the toolset so people can't do as much with it. There was plenty of really simple stuff in the first game bundled as pre-order bonuses or DLC, which was recreated by the modding community for free. In these days modding has started to be at odds with developers' DLC packs, so instead of offering more substantial DLC to keep it attractive like Bethesda did for Fallout 3, they'd rather lock down the games harder so they won't have to raise their standards to compete with modders and map makers.

Ouch. Thank god it's optional. Thanks for the link.

Edit: For the record, my not liking isometric games is no different than someone not liking to play first person games. I just can't stand the camera angle. Believe me, I know that this has made me miss 99% of the best RPGs out there, but it can't be helped.

I actually usually hate isometric view, but I couldn't stop playing DA:O that way. It's got a really great feel to it in-game.

I can understand that. Isometric can be really annoying when there isn't an option to rotate the camera.

I concur. The first sign of EA's bad influence was the most horrible DRM ever for Mass Effect PC that limited the number of installations to 3 and it wasn't removed until about a year later. That was followed by Mass Effect 2 that was basically a collection of unrelated side quests no matter how polished it was. Dragon Age: Origins which had a 6 year development cycle it was developed for the most part before Bioware was acquired by EA and of course it turned out to be a great game. However, look at what followed, a series of uninspired DLCs that some of them have been described as an insult to the customer even by the most mainstream sites, a rushed and unfinished expansion, and sloppy patching. I think it is best to reserve judgement for Dragon Age 2 until the game is released but the short development cycle makes me particularly cautious.

It is handy, however, when you want to use AoE spells and need to see which of your party is in the damage zone.

I don't use it for much more than that.

I agree, but you'll find yourself using it in combat. It's almost required on the higher difficulties(don't want to mess up a AoE spell for example).
