Dragon Age: Origins, Awakening & DA2

Blood Mage, Spirit Healer, or Force Mage. I'm going to have a tough choice picking two specializations out of those three.

i always did spirit healer in origins, just for teh group heal spell

After two legitimate play throughs, one as an elven mage (neutral) and one as a human noble dual-wielding rogue (chaotic good)... I've decided to run a cheat game just to see more dialogue and story options... I'm playing a purely evil human mage with the dwarf noble origin (I know... I know... its a mod and I can't stand playing as an actual dwarf or a warrior soooo... :P )... so far its fun except for the fact that everyone addresses me as a dwarf, damnit!

I love playing mages though... my current and most of my unfinished playthroughs are with mages - I can't stand warriors, and though I loved the dual-wielding, I didn't love it enough for a second playthrough. I always play with the Blood Mage + Spirit Healer combinations. That way I don't need Wynne (don't really like her and I'd rather replace her with someone who does more DPS) as I take care of all the healing myself, and also manage to do a heck of a lot of damage as well.

So I just finished the demo. I can't say I am impressed with the new combat system. I find it lacking. "Tap 'A' repeatedly to win" I didn't think Bioware would take inspiration from Koei, developers of that steaming pile of dog crap known as Dynasty Warriors.

I like the new skill tree.

Flemeth now looks her part. A total badass that is.

I also am appalled that I spent many, many hours carefully defining my personal storyline in DA:O, only to see it trashed so that Bioware could cut corners in DA2. Thanks Bioware!

I hope some PC modders will at least remove the conversation alignment/funny/mean/loveylovey icon, or better yet, re-arrange the speech options from circular back into a linear manner.

Which would make it exactly like Origins. So what's the problem with the wheel in the first place?

I see nothing wrong with the wheel. The addition of the icons is a good thing. :celebration:

My problem isnt about the wheel itself but the vagueness of the options that you choose. i had the same problem in mass effect where i thought it would say one thing but it would say something totally different.

Well, i'm downloading the PS3 demo too, i don't expect it to be better than the PC version though. And my favorite webstore, the one that bypasses VAT by selling from the little autonomous island in the Baltic Sea (the government is seeking to plug that loophole, though), has the game pre-orderable for 38€ (43€ for PS3), so sold!

Is this a thing for the console version only, or just the melee classes? I only went through the demo once, as a mage, and I only had to right click once to continue attacking.

Yes, for console version only. Though i think i heard the full version will have the option for auto attack for consoles too.

I believe that on consoles there is no auto-attack. Basically you need to button mash in order to kill stuff.

I swear that BioWare are secretly trying to piss console players off so that they can develop only for the PC or something.

Button mashing is my speciality but it would get old after a while. I hope they do have an auto toggle attack option for the consoles.

I played the demo....and was underwhelmed. Dialogue was wooden - I found myself wanting to kill all the characters just for opening their mouths. So, in DA2 the PC now has a voice, and still looks like a statue, except with a moving mouth. Flemeth was the single saving grace of the entire demo.

Gameplay, while not atrocious, wasn't great either. Party members often ignored commands. Tactics were royally fubared (Bioware says they're fixing it - I would certainly hope so!) I tried the mage class, and wasn't impressed. With the increased cooldowns on spells and reduced spell selection, the mage is now an auto-attack monkey who occasionally throws aoe's. It might improve at higher levels, but the exaggerated section doesn't have me holding my breath.

I'm still laughing at the Skeletor clones.

Are you sure about the cooldowns. The only cooldown that I've seen that takes a while to recharge is Heal which is 40 seconds. The rest have gotten reduced from what they were in Origins.

I didnt notice them ignore commands, just a bit dull, I had to switch for aveline for a second because she was just standing there not doing anything wile darkspawn attacked, then I see my rogue attacking the ogre. Now a rogues weapons are weak, so it was like giving a lion a papercut.
I didnt play as a mage warden in DAO yet, but are cooldowns faster than Morrigans ? Because some spells took about a minute some took longer in DAO.

Also its minor, but god it annoyed me, either templar armour is actually foil, or people carry some amazing daggers.

Dead certain.

Comparing DA:O with DA2, listing DA:O's first:

Winter's Grasp: 8s vs. 20s

Cone of Cold: 15s vs. 30s

Fireball: 10s vs. 20s

Petrify: 40s vs. 45s

Walking Bomb: 20s vs. 30s

Horror: 20s vs. 25s

And FYI, Heal has a 60s cooldown timer.

I've decided I'll just wait a bit and read about the game before I decide whether or not to buy it. I mean, what will I be missing? A sword and shield? Psshh, I don't even like the warrior class.

Yea, I tried it out on 360 because I didn't want to deal with EA servers, and wasn't thrilled with having to spam the attack button. However, I do know that the PC version gets auto-attack - not that it actually improves anything. It makes me wonder how many previewers actually played the demo, and how many of them were too blinded by the over-the-top animations to notice just how boring combat in DA2 has become.

My mage was a case of cast spell 1, cast spell 2, spam staff attacks for 20 seconds, rinse & repeat. And occasionally kite around. It's as though Bioware went out of their way to implement the worst of mmo combat mechanics.
