Dragon Age: Origins, Awakening & DA2

Post » Sun Oct 03, 2010 1:51 am

It was kinda small but I had no problems reading it. Of course that may be because I played the game on my 40" TV.

I was playing it on a 57" TV that supposedly supports High-def and I still had trouble reading it. I'll have to move my 360 back up to my room to see if it looks better on my tv.

About how long would you guys say it takes do to the first playthrough of the demo? And is it worth trying it out again as the opposite gender? I just want to know how much time I should set aside to play it.

Roughly 20 minutes. And the only difference gender makes is in the boobage factor. I thought both VA's were equally meh.

Also, for some reason most dialogue options end in exactly the same thing. Sloppy, BioWare, sloppy.

Finally finished Origins today. Hoping to do Awakenings tomorrow (is that realistic? how many hours is it....).

Am off in Berlin most of next week then have a conference the week after so hopefully the time will pass quickly to DA2. I've not spent a long time on the demo - will have another go tomorrow. :) Looked good to me first go though.

I know for a fact that the TV I have is 1080p HD. I didn't spend $1000 on it for no reason.

The text was perfectly readable on the PS3 version with my 19" Full HD TV. Bigger is not always better ;) And it only cost ~300 € :D

On the brightside its not as bad as Miranda in ME2, where the camera showed her assmore than her face.

It took me about 9 hours.

Oh and from my experience you will be "well this is easy" *final boss* "god nooooooo".
The difficulty is just off, then the last fight brings reality crashing back.

Well, that's always been the way Bioware did, or most RPGs, for that matter. Unless you decide big stuff in a quest with a response, the reaction is usually one sentence, and after that the dialogue goes on the same way.

I found an amusing player review that sums up my feelings on the demo pretty well: http://grimlyenthusiastic.wordpress.com/2011/02/25/lets-play-dragon-age-2-the-demo/.

Poor level design, poor encounter design, dialogue that can be described as superfluous and pointless, choices that all lead to the same consequence, forced combat.

I fail to see how this addresses any of Dragon Age: Origin's problems at all. They changed the combat style, but that wasn't really the problem-- it was the load of filler combat and poor encounter design. And the good old Bioware "choices" are back, too. You can't even choose to let that Darkspawn taint guy live, and have to live with the consequences? Even Fable did that (okay, he was bitten by a wolfman, but same thing). I especially like how they changed the whole combat system to something more actiony, even though the real problem was with the encounters themselves being excessive and boring.

Great game. 4/5

Never got DA:O because I find the game not appropriate for my son. So not sure if it's any good. I have read great things about it on the forums here though. I am shocked to see most people say that the demo for DA:O 2 svck and is bad.

So how many will get the game now that they don't like the demo?

No, Isabella has a very skimpy outfit, and the six scenes are back, only now falatio. The game isnt for kid, and the gore is even worse than before.

DA:O has a a good story, but is linear, and as mentioned above, has a lot of filler combat. Main problem with combat in DA:O was that it was static, heavily scripted, and predictable - play through the game once, you know exactly what enemies spawn where and even how they'll attack. My impressions of the demo are that DA2 does nothing to improve on this, and in fact, seems to implement the worst of mmo game mechanics.

I had considered renting the game, but now I don't think I'll even do that.

We've had this one for years. It's one of those old tube types of widescreen tvs and it's stuck in the basemant. Maybe I should hook it up to the 40" flat screen in the family room, which is newer. :P

I didn't like either of their voices really but don't really mind them either. My SDTV also made the lines all blurry. After my initial excitement for this game I think I might just wait for the GOTY edition. I also didn't like male Hawke's beard, it reminds me too much of that Star Wars cartoon.

I will say that the DA2 Demo is not an accurate description of the game I mean it's only 20 to 30 minutes of at least a 30 hour game if not longer.

It's not like good encounter design and absence of filler combat is hard to showcase in a demo, friend.

I agree I think they could've released a much better version of the demo but it's typical Bioware though. They always aim for the stars but they land on the moon, which isn't bad but it's not the stars.

I know you folks probably don't respect PC Gamer's reviews, but the issue I received today gave DA 2 a rating of 94 percent. "The most impressive attempt I've seen at making player decisions mean something." The reviewer also says that it has some "genuinely dark quest lines".

I've heard about that review. The ratings that I've seen range from 85-94 which is still pretty good.

Well, what I meant was that a few encounters that were unique would present a better demo than several encounter that were very similar.

Finally got around to playing the demo. My thoughts:

Looks like ass. Runs like ass. Voice acting for everyone svcks. Combat animations are choppy, running animations are Bethesda quality (as in BAD). Little strategy required in combat (thank you very much lack of friendly fire). Archer rogues are overpowered, melee rogues svck. Can't fully turn off Tactics. Ugly interface that looks like it belongs in a sci-fi game. And most of all...who the [censored] wrote this [censored]?!

Two-and-a-half hours downloading, 15 minutes to install (would have been quicker, but it seems that I was victim to a minor d3dx9_43.dll issue that delayed my slightly regardless), and about 30-50 minutes playing the demo itself...I should have spent all that time playing New Vegas instead.

Let me guess. You get a letter? :shakehead:

I'm not falling for "omg your choices matter! this is your story!1" again, Bioware.
