Dragon Age: Origins, Awakening & DA2

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:27 am

I enjoyed the first game enough, and managed to finish it in spite of getting burnt out by all the filler combat in the final parts of the game.

I tried the demo of the second game, and after experiencing that the combat encounters were even worse than in the first game (enemies continually attacking in waves) and the combat being a huge mess due to the much increased speed I decided to skip the game.

Me too.

A couple of my friends say its still a good game.
I ask them why, they say they like the look of the new combat compared to the first game.

which is exactly our point. this is why I can't get myself to by DA2.

My friend just let me borrow DA:O a few days ago, I haven't even put it in yet because I've been playing other games. Is it worth starting up and consuming days of my life?

I've just finished Dragon Age 2 and I'm giving it a 9/10. The Game took 36 hours for me to finish and I probably missed a couple side quests that I'll do in later files. I was level 22 when I beat the final boss.

The ending was kinda weird,It's not like Origins ending and it wasn't what I expected.
Combat was an improvement over Origins I like being able to dodge Enemy attacks and having my mage feel like a mage instead of just spaming spells like in Origins.
The story was pretty good, I don't think it was as good as Origins story but it was still pretty good.
The Writing for this game is excellent.
Boss Fights are epic and hard which is both good and bad.
Graphics look outstanding on the 360 and are a major improvement over Origins Graphics.
I don't miss auto attack
Healing Cooldowns are annoying but you'll get used to them as you play.

My only complaints about the game. Combat AI for the rest of the party is still a pain in the butt to deal with. "Varric use Health Potion, oh wait you just got killed". That kinda stuff probably annoyed me the most. Also a very embarassing Infinite Exp Glitch that someone in programing must've either forget to take it out or didn't realize that it would do that. I wouldn't reccomend doing the glitch because enemies level up with you. I did the glitch got my self up to level 30 and got killed by a Dragon with ease. If you do the glitch only do it up to Level 15-20. My last complant is Duel Wielding Rogue, It's probably the worst class in Dragon Age 2, your better off with just using Isabella. Archer is a different story although I can't say it's bad yet because I haven't played as one fully for the whole story.

Combat is too fast-paced, there must be some kind of speed controllers for those who cant handle it

After dealing with an ...angry mob (angrier and more mobby than the one at Lothering in Origins :D) in the second chapter, i found it does offer quite challenge and tactics in prolonged fights. Do i assassinate that guy or should i save it for the next wave? Is that good enough opportunity to use a bomb? Shall i heal or use potion? And even more positively, i've been strolling with 3 rogues (Hawke and Varric as archers with Isabela) + mage setup, refreshing that one doesn't need the Tank+ Rogue + healer + (whatever) setup.

Despite the speed it requires thinking, and i find myself pausing much more than in Origins.

Regarding the family drama in the end of first part and the second part...
Spoiler
First Bethany gets tainted, good thing she was saved, more or less. Then a serial killer gets her mom, if only it would've ended in just killing. Sick bastards, who comes up with this stuff? I wish killing that wacko would been with a slowly applied murder knife.

Life just keep kicking Hawke in the head :shakehead:

I am looking forward to play my other characters trough these events, and see how they play out with the different personalities and relationships. So i declare this the best thing with a 2 in it's name since Terminator 2 :P

Just finished DA2 and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yes there are quite a few differences from DA:O, hovewver, this game isn't DA:O 2 and I didn't expect it to be. It does do a wonderful job of telling the story of Hawke and his/her companions and the choice to do a mass effect style dialogue system with a voiced PC was the right one.

I found combat and tactics management to be more challenging on Normal than in Origins (wich is a good thing).

I didn't encounter anything that I could call a bug (except maybe import data from Origins being slighlty off) and the performance issues in DX11 I can attribute to currently poor driver support. The game looks better and runs better in DX9 than DA:O on the same system.

I think that the demo should have never been released, as It is so broken compared to the full game, that It would put anyone off. I'm glad that I saw past that hickup, and I feel sorry for anyone else who's opinion was coloured by it.

The only negative things I have to say relate to the art and interface design. The interface is too minimal both in aesthetic and in function, even though it works as well as it needs to. I much prefered the artistic interface of DA:O. The other gripes I have are pretty superficial; The trees are tiny and the vegetation and flags are static (i.e. not reacting to wind). And there is far too much environment recylcling going on (although this is understandable as EvilArts pushed the developers to churn this title out quickly).

For a rushed game...It's pretty magnificent and long enough; took me 48 hours to finish doing most side quests, but I imagine if you play on high or nightmare it would take alot longer.

It's a 9/10 from me (lost point for slightly bad art direction...oh, and Dalish look like evil praying mantises.)

Heres some ammusing trivia regarding the female voice actor for Hawke - Joanna Wyatt: It's...rather disturbing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_U0Kyv4PRA :D

I don't know how you've come to that conclusion, or that the boss fights are hard. I played as a dual wielding rogue, and my character ended up killing about 90% of the enemies we fought, and I only had my entire party die three times in the entire game, doing every single sidequest. Two of them were on the high dragon.

Has anyone downloaded and installed the texture pack yet? If so, what level are you running it on and what do you have for a GPU and CPU?

I've been running the texture pack on my Steam install since the release date.

I get great frame rates everywhere except in the Bone Pit, when the clouds and shadows are moving around on the ground in Bone Pit, my frame rate drops probably below 30 fps.

Also in a few cutscenes with lots of fire and smoke the frame rate drops a bit, but still looks great.

Display Settings: "Very High," 1920x1080, DX11, 16x AF, 8x AA, High Quality Blur, Hi Res Textures enabled

Envy 15 laptop, i7-820QM, 1GB AMD 5830M, 16GB RAM, Dual Intel X18 G2 SSDs in Raid0

Interesting - I've logged 35 hours on the game and I'm still in Act 1 at level 8, I have not yet completed any of the bigger Act 1 quests or gone on the expedition. Based on this I would estimate my first playthrough might last 100 hours or so. Not quite as long as a Bethesda game, but much longer than DA:O. ME2 only lasted around 30 hrs IIRC.

Maybe part of it is because I'm playing on Nightmare (sometimes dropping down to Hard) mode and constantly pausing and micromanaging the combat? The combat seems to be a lot more challenging and fun, much better tactical gameplay balance compared with DA:O. (i.e., spamming healing potions doesn't work anymore)

Yes, I've been using it, all settings maxed, never dropped below 60FPS with Vsync on, except some odd cutscenes where it would drop, but I couldn't figure out why. It would be a closeup of a character's face during dialogue, and it would just drop down to about 10, but after the cutscene, I could put the game camera at the same angle on the same character, and it was 60FPS.

I'm using a 6950 and a 2500k with 4GB of RAM.

Have just started playing it properly and have had a bit of a chuckle to myself regarding the Dalish's accents. Some are Welsh, some are Scottish, one was Irish and yet others have been English. How peculiar....

The English accent makes sense, they take in "flat ears" who want to go back to their routes, after living with humans they probablly kept an accent.

Still Dalish are now my fasvorite faction purely becuase they are celts.

Well the English accent makes sense to me because most of the characters speak with one. The grating accent of the Dalish companion means I won't be having her round much....

True but Dalish try to remain seperate and keep what culture they can, so it makes sense they sound different, also I dont like Merrills accent, while I like seeing the Welsh accent in games, I dont actually like it, sounds nasty (well on women, I dont mind guys with Welsh accents, but it just dosent seem a good accent for women imo I dont know why).

Allthough some people find her voice/accent cute, so each to their own.

Merrills accent doesn't bother me, the fact that she can't learn healing spells does though.

And no, its not the PS3. I just played ME2 today and it didn't happen

Spoiler

I had this problem too, I disconnected my PS3 from the internet and it worked fine from that point on. I now have it connected again and it hasn't crashed yet. I'm not garaunteeing that it will work for you, but it's worth a try

Spoiler
(Unless you mean the ogre at beginning) I hear leaving her home gets her captured by the Templars, but in the end lives relatively happily in the Circle. If you have Anders with you at the Deep Roads she can join the Wardens. No way to save mom, unfortunately.

Now about 16 hours into the game and have finally realized that they keep reusing the same maps over and over again AND the same map layout over and over again.

WTF!

This...this... is just unforgivable.

Just finished DA2. It was pretty fun although a bit repetitive at some points. I also encountered an annoying slight freeze when playing in DX11 mode with my 6970. I am using CCC version 11.4 preview drivers. Overall it took me about 28 hours to beat. Storyline was good, but the same maps over and over again got boring.

Alright game so far, but doesn't touch Origins, in my opinion.

I didn't like how the PC is voiced... that kills RPing for me in a lot of ways.

Despised the continuous reuse of dungeons and maps, makes everything seem like it was rushed (and how could it not be? 1.5 years is so not enough to make an epic RPG).

I'm not done playing yet, so I won't comment on the story at this point, so far its pretty good though.

Companions are okay too, but I don't like how infrequently you can talk to them and they don't seem to have as much TLC put into them, either. I preferred Alistair, Morrigan and the gang by far... I find it strange how every single romanceable companion is bisixual now? Just seems really unrealistic to me, but I guess I won't complain.

Combat: really dislike the new style; its way too unrealistic, flashy and unnecessarily gory (bodies exploding after getting hit with an arrow? Um.). Its sad but I get farther in this game through button-mashing than actually planning tactics. Oh well, I'm hoping it grows on me. -_- I just think it was a huge step backwards. I also don't like the constant waves of enemies, it makes the battlefield seem even more chaotic (not in a good way).

I'll be waiting for more mods to come out (better presets anyone? ) before I go through a second, more detailed playthrough...only a handful out now and nothing really appealing at the moment. Seriously hoping they release the toolset (and actually make it freakin' work for all of us this time), but doubt it will happen. :(

So far I'm having the most fun with fun with the Mage. Then the rouge then the warrior. The npc tanks don't have personality so I've taken to runing two mages and two rogues. This one is very easy so far, nowhere near the challenge if the first game.

Now that I've played it through, I can say it's a better game than its predecessor, mostly due to its plot, which has taken a huge leap forward. Sure, I miss talking to companions whenever I want to, but at least it doesn't feel like a Joss Whedon rip-off in a save-the-world mess of a setting. Also, there's TONS of new lore and the art style got a necessary makeover to distance it from the generic fantasy feel of DA:O. Kirkwall's architecture looks fantastic, and so does the boss design (those wiggly brass slave statues, anyone?)

I'm about 14 hours in and I just finished the Deep Roads, and now I'm absolutely bored with the game and don't feel like continuing. Companions are flat and boring, and the side quests are dreadful. Does it get better?
