Unfortunately that is partially spoiled by
Spoiler Meredith's sword forged from lyrium idol found at the thaig at the end of Act 1
, as it causes there to be more to the conflict than just the people. Indeed just before the [censored] hits the fan
Spoiler Meredith does show regert in how she is treating the mages, if the sword had not been involved, perhaps there could've been a peaceful solution?
Still, as player choices do not affect the major events of DA2 it's pretty obvious that DA2's point was to serve as a setup for the war that will most likely play the major role in the next DA game.
