Dragon Age: Origins & Awakening

Post » Tue Mar 16, 2010 8:49 pm

Don't bother with the fire - in this game, for once, the frost/ice spells are really worthwhile. Cone of Cold can save your ass frequently. Combining spells can rock - and have some surprising results. Most of the spells are pretty interesting, but there is always one per line that is kind of meh. :P

Don;'t understimate the glyphs. The paralysis glyph is better than the paralysis spell more often than not, and repulsion is quite entertaining to use.

Maybe its just me, but I have never saw the appeal of taking Sten anywhere, he is pretty much like Alistair, ust replace the whining with him just being silent and trying to keep any sort of conversation to a minimum, he ust annoys me, atleast zevran talks, even if he annoys me its more entertaining than sten. So who is your guys least favorite party member ? For me its out of Shale, Sten and Oghren.

I can usually leave Oghren, Sten, and Morrigan behind, once I get Wynne. I can't help myself; I end up playing "paragon" 99% of the time. I got so tired of "Morrigan disapproves" that I usually leave her in camp. As far as Oghren and Sten go, I don't like the way the two handed fighting goes. Just my perception, but while you do a lot of damage if you hit, it seems that you are mostly swinging at the space where your enemy used to be, five minutes ago when you started your swing. When I leave Sten and Oghren to defend the gate in the final battle, I seriously doubt either one of them managed to hit more than one or two of the running darkspawn. Even Shale moves better than that. It improves if Shale can use her "crowd control" to hold the darkspawn and give Sten and Oghren stationary targets. Zevran isn't a favorite either; I do get that he's an assassin, not a rogue, so stop offering to open locked containers for me, okay? You can't do it, so don't offer. I like Leliana much better for the rogue role, even though that seems to be my favorite class so far.

I really avoid Oghren in Awakening. They changed the conversation system, and because I tend to forget to hit my tab key every .5 seconds I miss the conversation triggers. I have yet to figure out how to do his quest. Most of the others aren't that hard to start, but I keep running out of patience before I get Oghren's. There were other annoying things for me in Awakening, but it did have a decent story for the most part. I tend to replay games, and I'm still playing both Origins and Awakening, so for me it was worth the cost.

Talaran, if you are on the PC, I highly recommend the Respec mod. I've swapped skills for Sten for example to use sword and shield, I've made Alistair a dual-wielding warrior, I've modified Zevran to be a solid assassin rogue. Not had a problem with the mod, very easy to use and handy. :)

Barkspawn

I was awful tempted to use that name, but had to use something original. So eventually I went with Poochie the Rocking Dog, and later when I made an "evil" character, McGruff the Criminal Dog.

Both dwarf stories are really good, I thought. But I couldn't play through the game as a dwarf... I felt funny, perspective wise, being so short. Playing through the dwarf noble origin certainly lends an interesting perspective to any runthroughs of the Orzammer quests.

Heh. I only refer to him as that, because it is dopily amusing to me. I always call the dog "Tim".

I named him Baraka once, and Mubarak. I think I read once that the devs used to call him "Rabbit". Can anyone confirm that?

six, swords and saucy french accents. That'll make some of you angry but I want camp. For those of you without a cheesy or is that fromage sense of humour the following will interest

Leliana seemed an obvious fit, because she's a natural storyteller. We also did initial design work for several other followers—some as back-story, some as epilogue, some involving the player Grey Warden, and some not. I'm confident you'll hear about another of those soon

imo the Dwarf noble origin was the best one in the game, I immediately went back to Orzammar after Lothering to see what would happen.

I played this game a lot on my Xbox and enjoyed it a lot. I'm wondering how this would work on a average laptop, not a gaming laptop but its not crap either. I'm getting a new laptop soon.

For weapons, dual-wielding. Attack fast with Momentum, hit multiple enemies with Sweep and Whirlwind, knock 'em on their ass with Punisher, and stun them with Riposte. Add even more fun when combined with a rogue for backstabbing goodness, then give him two daggers and pile on the Cunning to increase damage and make armor a complete non-issue, and watch things die in seconds flat.

As for spells, Blood Wound is all sorts of levels of overpowered. Other favorites are Cone of Cold (always handy), Waking Nightmare (fun :chaos:), the Walking Bombs (so worth the friendly fire), and the ungodly powerful Storm of the Century combo (even if it chances are it'll kill all of your guys).

Hee - I love nightmare - it's also not got the friendly fire issue, unless you count when your enemies under the spell attack each other. Ha! And the two walking bomb spells remain a favorite, collateral damage be damned. As long as one party member can quickly hit group heal, I'm happy to use it. And for those damned mages with their fireball spell, I love taking them out in pretty much one hit with Mana Clash - another very overpowered spell. I end up almost never using the blood magic spells... just not my style for role playing.

One of my favorite moments in an early playthrough - completely mobbed by the dozen or so werewolves in that room just before the lair with the Lady. There had to be at least 10 of them, with their shred and damned overpower. Virulent walking bomb goes off, with an awesome chain reaction and the next thing I know, there is a pile of werewolf rugs on the floor. Everyone took damage but lived, as it is hard to maneuver in that close space but I just sat there for a minute, just appreciating the whole event.

What have you all thought about the dlc that has been released so far including the expansion? Also what about Leliana's song that will release in July? I was hoping for something from Orlais and maybe Antiva but was expecting something longer.

I already have The stone Prisoner, and Warden's Keep but are Return to Ostagar and Darkspawn Chronicles worth getting.

For dragon age 2 I was thinking about a new potential party member depending on your actions in Awakening. I would like The Messenger to join as a party member. While walking around he could be a hooded traveler and when combat begins he can throw off his cloak similar to Goris from Fallout 2.

I haven't played Darkspawn chronicles yet but Return to Ostagar was a bit of a let down for me. The loot is pretty good but the quest is short and doesn't really add a lot to the game. If you do get Return to Ostagar I recommend bringing Alistair and Wynne (or the secret companion) since they have the most to say during the dlc.

Eh, I would prefer that DA2 take place in a different country with a whole new protagonist, and save transfers be damned.

Yeah, I guess you could say they fixed the memory leaks. Originally, the best way to deal with them would be to periodically save your game, quit the program, and restart it. Patch 1.03 fixes all that inconvenience nicely. No more menus to access, no more extra keys to press, Dragon Age will now, more than before, crash to desktop automatically shut down, at any time, without any prompting or fuss on your end! Fast! Efficient! Convenient!
