Dragon attacks.

Post » Sun Sep 18, 2011 6:55 pm

Discuss.

When dragons attack villages, are these events scripted? What happens if a quest giver is killed in the fight? Will buildings be destroyed? Will guards and citizens help? Can other large creatures like Smilodons and Giants attack villages?

Sorry if there have been threads like this before, I havn't seen any.

I dont know if they are scripted.

Thanks to radiant AI, when a quest giver is killed, the radiant system assigns the quest to that quest giver's relative, or friend or wife. There are no destructable enviornments. Im pretty sure that the other citizens and gaurd will automatically get into fight mode or something, but most citizens might run away. I dont think other creatures can attack villages. . but you never know.

I read somewhere that dragons can destroy buildings, but I've always doubted that would make final release, never know though

Yea Todd stated it would be a very rare event because they didnt like to destroy buildings. Which implies that it is indeed possible, but doesnt say wether its scripted events or random events.

Actually just googled it, "some buildings can be destroyed but are rare"

http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/286552-skyrim-information/

sounds reasonable enough, I was worried they would wreck the smithy or something, but as long as its that odd building on the edge of town that gets destroyed I'm good.

EDIT: beat me to it, ninja

Radiant Story takes care of dead quest givers.

I hope so. The only example they've given so far (if the quest-giving shopkeeper dies his sister takes the shop and quest over, or something like that) involved a planned death of that shopkeeper, because another quest involves killing him. So I'm not so sure to what extend the game actually reacts to quest givers dying unexpectedly.

After all, switching from 1 questgiver to another if the first one dies also means that the other person needs to have their own voice acted dialogue for the quest, unless this second character is of the same race and gender as the first quest giver...

Also the dragons have their own AI, so they just roam around free from what I understand, maybe the buildings might be a couple scripted things, but I think alot of the dragon stuff is supposed to be free flowing

the only thing I worry about is them tuning it way down or taking out features again at the last second like they did with the "radiant AI" just before Oblivion, hopefully they aren't turning into Lionhead

I'm more concerned about the randomness. The fights could get really annoying, really fast.

I would prefer a finite dragon number, something like 30-40 truly epic mini-boss encounters.

I think most people exagerate here, I doubt we'll see a dragon every 30 minutes, I imagine it will have hours between them, but who knows?

Worst case scenario (for me since Im on PC) I bet theres gonna be a mod to tweak the time between dragon encounters.
