Dragon bones are heavy?

Post » Sun Sep 04, 2011 10:37 am

I took a look at this site: http://www.kotaku.com.au/2011/09/5-more-things-ive-learned-about-skyrim-murder-and-encumberance/ and when I kept reading I stumbled across this: "This is a game that lets you kill dragons, though, and Howard warned me that dragon bones are heavy."

Wait... What...?

How are dragons even supposed to fly when they are heavy?
Dragon bones are frequently described as hollow, like birds, so they are actually able to fly. Now these people who actually study these mythological creatures are somewhat convinced they actually exist so they try to image the most realistic possibility how they could live, fly, breathe fire etc etc..
TES V: Skyrim, however, is a fantasy game and plays off in a fantasy world. And in this world magic exists. So it could be that the dragon sort of lift themselves up or make them lighter with magic.

So...
What r ur thots on this?,.??" :spotted owl:

Dragons don't use their wings to generate lift, they just use magic. This is the actual lore explanation. Even if dragon bones were hollow and light, carrying them around with you would not be easy (thus they'd be described as heavy).

They fly with magic, but it's also a game balance thing, like the better weapons being heavier. Makes 'game' sense if the bones are heavier than lesser crafting materials like metal ingots.

Seeing as simply using the dragon language spoken in their own tongue is enough to cause pretty dramatic magical effects, I don't think its outside the realm of possibility that they are indeed magical creatures who possibly use magic to make themselves lighter. I mean we DO still have the feather spell I hope.

Why are people saying that they fly with magic? last time I checked, wings are for flying.

The dragons are able to fly, even though being so heavy, not only because of their powerful wings, but mostly because they speak the dragon language while flying. It's the dragon language that gives dragons their true powers (one of them flying) and not by being just dragons.

I don't remember where I read this, but I think it was in the lore.

Yeah, how can those fire breathing dragons, in a world of magic, elves, and strange beasts, ever fly

Because that is the explanation that the lore provides.

Plus even if dragon bones are light for their size, I'd imagine a lot of the bones are pretty big.

What's the point in having wings if they can fly with magic?

Nirn, I believe I read somewhere, isn't the same mass as earth, so gravity wouldn't be such a profound effect. On another point, Dragons are mythical creatures of magic, they may be heavy, but their magical inclination may allow them to by-pass conventional gravity in their world.

It could be heavy to you but that doesnt mean the dragon can't carry it with its giant wings... A stupid comparison but normal bird bones would seem heavy to an insect

That's different. A bird without wings cannot fly, but I guess Nirn is not Earth so it's instantly ok.

Dragons generate lift magically. Their wings aid with steering and balance.
