Dragon captions series

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 8:45 am

I've got several of the Dragon captions series in my modlist, still unaccessed, but ready to play. Thing is, I know at least one or two have since been revamped, such as Fort Akatosh. I don't know anything about the newer versions, and wondered if they had enough added recently to justify the overhaul required to install. (Bear in mind, I've TES4Edited the lot.) Would appreciate knowing which ones you think are worth replacing, why, and if so, which files from the older series can be safely removed (those resource files were enormous). Will take comments here, or in private messages. I'm not looking to get into the whole controversy surrounding the original mod team leader, if that helps. Rehashing the past in a situation like that is like rolling in the mud. It seldom gets anyone very clean.

In advance, thanks!

Original mod team leader for Dragon Captions is the same as it has always been, biulding3015 (aka Scythe). There is no controversy surrounding him at all, he is a dedicated, friendly modder.

One should always update to the latest version of any mod unless there is a specific reason not to, so if you are using old versions, update.

The person I mean led the original team that created the Dragon Captions Resource Pack, as well as The Elder Council. It wasn't Euther, Scythe, Firespark, Onra, etc. I'd mention the name, but there's a tendency for firestorms to erupt when people do, and the moderators tend understandably to frown upon that.

-But if you want to push it, I guess we could mention Giskard, and see if things can be kept under control. Perhaps you took me to mean some other leader, but he was the one who created the original resource pack, the first Elder Council mod, etc.

I suspect I could have been clearer. Let me try again:

My current versions of the Fort Akatosh, The Elder Council, and Guards of Cyrodil mods all use Building301's DCRP resource files, a huge compilation of content. But the new Redux versions of Fort Akatosh and Guards of Cyrodil have migrated the the Tamriel Resource Pack, while there isn't any Elder Council Redux. My understanding is that adding extremely large BSAs tends to slow things down, and if that's the case, I have to balance moving from just the 14 or 15 or so DCRP resource files to adding in the very large collection of the Tamriel Resource Pack, against whether Fort Akatosh Redux and Guards of Cyrodil really provide that much more than their immediate predecessors. If not, I can stay with DCRP, alone. If the changes that players find are significant, I'll bite the bullet, put in the Redux versions, and add in the Tamriel Resource Pack.

Second, assuming I just stick with my pre-Redux versions of Fort Akatosh and Guards of Cyrodil, can I remove all the resources for Giskard's CURP, Onra's DCUORP, and Biulding301's DCRP resource packs that have more or less superceded or linked into one another over the years?

In advance, thanks.

You should go to the Dragon Captions forum for information on their mods. As far as the other guy, his mods are separate and I believe at the moment unavailable. Your best bet would be to search on Google to see if those are available. Onra has his own website as well and I think he developed Fort Akotosh.

A good idea, but it's kind of dead over there. Last comments in the Oblivion Dragon Caption section were in 2010.

That is probably when I last visited it. Sorry to hear that.

Me, too. That bunch did very good, involved quest mods, as well as filled out sketchy background in some areas of the game.

I was merely correcting your statement, as Giskard never lead Dragon Captions, he lead other mod teams and before that modded solo, but the actual original leader of DC is the same person it is now, and there has never been any controversy around biulding. I'm sure you don't want to accidentally cause people to think there was any controversy about biulding :) DC had permission to release updates of some of Giskard's mods, but that isn't all DC has released, there were also several mods released with no connection to Giskard's mods at all (such as two of the mods you mentioned, Fort Akatosh and Guards of Cyrodiil, which are now not DC mods as their creators went their own way).

Well as I already said, you should always upgrade to the latest version of any mod (unless there are known problems with the latest version which did not exist in the previous version). The latest versions of all of Giskard's mods which were released up until August last year can be downloaded in one package http://www.fileplanet.com/216598/210000/fileinfo/The-Elder-Scrolls-IV:-Oblivion---Giskards--Cyrodiil-Upgrade-Mod-Pack. Use TES4Edit to clean them before playing.
Fort Akatosh Redux and Guards of Cyrodiil Redux are both available on Nexus, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=21856 and http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=28586.

If you don't want to use BSAs, then you can always extract them and install the separate files instead (use BAIN to keep the installation tidy). Oblivion Mod Manager provides BSA creation and BSA browsing tools, and the BSA browser can also extract.

Each mod should specify what it requires. If you have old resource packs installed, completely remove them first along with the old versions of each mod, then install the new versions of the mods, checking the installation instructions and requirements as you go to ensure that whatever resources are required get installed.
