Dragon discussion

Wow did a Dragon eat your family? I'm sorry but I just can't get my head around your whole logic. I get freedom but I don't think Dragons are taking anything away from it, Bethesda trying to make it everyone friendly is more to blame in general than Dragons.

If you actually read his post you'll see he said that the development time would be better spent elsewhere.

Frankly I don't know, it's far too speculative what else they would've done. The only indications I know of are: Beast legs and Spears. Would that have been a worthwhile trade off to you? Dragons are a HUGE selling point however and the game will definitely sell better for it.

I don' mind the dragons they needed to be shown sooner or later, if you recall from some of the TES there is a land mass with dragons and more dragons if I recall right can't remember the name while they could have set the story there think that would have made more work then needed, plus don't think this nord god is anything new.

I think I will enjoy the story very much and will most likely to fight dragons and consume their souls. But ultimately, does it add where TES is about?

You say "what TES is about". I find it quite dumb. In TES you have freedom, but does that mean that other things cannot be added? In addition... what is freedom?

No, of course not.

Just to clarify, once more, because my point doesn't seem to be getting across, but I am not against more freedom or player choice, or wealth of items, but I do not agree with your assumption that extra time gained by taking out Dragons would automatically be re-appropriated towards those things especially when Bethesda clearly feels that Dragon's are worthwhile addition over such things and would be more likely to implement something similar to Dragons rather than simply add more items and 'more freedom'.

Again, this is not what I've been discussing at all, my response was a questioning of your assumed reasoning for asking this question in the first place, not a response based on my perception of what 'The Elder Scrolls' series is about.

No indeed. We could never know if it would be re-appropriated to such things. I will rephrase my question then. Do you want one more unique huge creature to fight or additions to what makes TES the game it represents? Not saying they dedicate their time to said additions, but what if you could decide between those two?

Sorry ,that's a dumb question. It's about both of those and more, much more. No i won't be specific, you should already know.

Dragons equal Additions to freedom? Sorry if I misinterpreted your message if I did.

I get what you are saying I think, Dragons are large, they aren't scripted, they pop up randomly so you never know when they'll be there, they took a lot of time to develop (I assume anyways), they may get in the way of some exploration and that is all my brain can think of right now. I just don't understand why they hinder RP. Lots of roleplay has dragons in it. They may take a bit of freedom away.

My question is What would you replace them with?

They had a team work on dragon's for around two years.....a team,NOT everyone. That means other things were being done also.

In that occassion, I'd simply have to state that it's an impossible question to answer at this point; while it's fair to debate some points based on pre-release information and how Bethesda represents the game, the true wealth of player choice available can only really be personally ascertained by playing the game for a sizable amount of time.

Assuming, of course that the changes Bethesda has made to the armour and weapon systems has indeed offered a far greater wealth of items themselves as they've promised, and that the greater number of quests, branches and well-designed dungeons is also, indeed true, then I would say, tentatively, that I'm satisfied with them spending development time on Dragons.

That is, of course solely assuming that what they've promised is true. In the case that it wasn't, then I'd prefer the opposite.

Freedom in what you want to be, want to train in, want to create, how effectively you can create the character you want. I never said other things cannot be added. I just prefered the time they put into dragons they'd put in other stuff. Like additions many people would like to see in this game, or what features could be balanced.

I'd put the time in what made TES populair in the first place and in what people have issues with.

Just saying that the particular team assigned to dragons could have been put on other matters such as more content or balancing of features.

Doomsiren, Edit your Thread and make a Poll on something like:

Is Skyrim the Dragons you play the Game for

Do you even want Dragons in Skyrim

Will you be ok if Skyrim dident have Dragons
==========================================================
Its clear you Dont like Giant Overpowered Beasts for some reason, so when is Bethesda Allowed in Your Opinion to have Giant Creatures in their Games, even the Giants themselves seem out of place for Skyrim

How do I edit my thread?

Even though people miss some things, the popular opinion is that dragons are a great addition. They have a cool Lore.... and Dragonshouts are a new and cool mechanic.

So... I would say that people prefer dragons. We have a lot of freedom already. And, if not dragons, they would have to have spent time in any other things for the mainquest.

Not everyone has the same issue/issue's....some none at all.

I don't think you really have a grasp of things overall to be honest. This is going nowhere.
It sounds to me ,like you want everything your way and that's that.....it doesn't work like that in my book.

Actually I'm far more excited over dragons than "dragonshouts". When it comes down to it they are just spells, and they take up an extra key. Eliminating that could have pleased the "WAT IS DIS I CANT BLOCK WITH TWO SWORD" crowd.

They are indeed a great addition, but I value balancing, more content involving...pretty much everything else above dragons. Guess I am one of the few who values this more so then dragons :P

I think that If Bethesda was not going to include dragons, people would still be uber excited.

Well, I suppose that's something personal. I love Dragonshouts because of their Lore... and they are far more awesome that normal spells. It's the [censored] power of the dragons!

About the blocking thing, I don't think that the lack of Dragonshouts would have made Bethesda work on dual-wielding blocking. They just didn't want it to be possible.

Please quote the part where I said It ruins my freedom? If you can't do this, then it shows how ignorant you are.

Okay:
You value dragons more then the content they could have included to make TES more about what it has always been about? Freedom?

What is skyrim about? Freedom or Dragons?

And the very answer to my post:
And why do people think I do not appriciate dragons? Because I value freedom and RP more?

And the OP
But do we really need dragons? I think the costs exceed the benefits in the case of dragons.

So I guess you state these out of fun, not actually meaning what you say.

But again, this argument is just stupid.
If there wouldn't be dragons you might as well complain why they've worked on better giant AI, instead of adding spears or I don't know, because that just "adds to the beastiary".

And it seems content has another synonym, it was depth before now it's "freedom". What's next, you lost your immersion because there's not enough stuff to do.
Actually, even this is wrong. So there's not enough things because of dragons? Where?
Hundreds of dungeons are already confirmed, and if there are less than before, that isn't because of the dragons but because they're actually working on making them more detailed. Aren't there also hundreds of sidequests, points of interest, random encounters?
Or is this about spears, again?
How you don't have enough choice in character creation for some reason?
It would be pointless to design multiple ways for the same problem if they would have to sacrifice content for the sake of "character depth"... Who cares about unique enemies, we need spears.

Overall, this is just a "what if..." question, a type of question that is completely meaningless. There's no "what if", because that did not happened and you would NEVER know how it would've gone otherwise, and again, even if you do, it doesn't make a bloody difference.

I still cannot find the ruined part? Only that I value other things then dragons?

Just saying that I'd rather have more features to create the character I want. Skyrim is an rpg after all.

Don't care about your book nor for mine in particular.

More Items? Balanced Spell creation for example? improved Attribute system?

I think you don't have a grasp of things. I am talking about the big picture here, not only my personal preference. Any content anyone would want to add instead of dragons suffice.

So in an rpg quantity beats quality?

I'm not a game designer, but don't they have different departments for different things? So say different ones for the storylines, world generation, character animation, game mechanics etc. If that is the case, I don't see how dragons would have detracted from the design of other areas, seeing as it would be the work of a different team of people. All of those different areas need to be worked on, and they were probably all done in tandem - I doubt they spent say 2 years working on dragons and then realised they forgot to plan for other stuff, so cut it out.
I doubt them not putting in dragons would have meant too much change to the basic structure/gameplay mechanics of Skyrim, purely because they designed the game to be this way to begin with, so any resources freed up from not creating dragons would have gone into creating another MQ/big baddie.

Hope that makes sense. :P

Bethesda designs the game the way they would want it to be if they played it, not based upon some laundry list given to them by the public. I wouldn't want the developers to be fettered by some litmus test of "Does this add to the overall freedom and/or RPGness of the game?" every time a new feature/content is considered. I would also contend that freedom is not the sole focus of TES. It is one of the core features yes, but it should not be focused on to the exclusion of all else. Also, if I recall correctly, they had a small team working on the dragons for a while before Skyrim got into the main development cycle. So even if the skills of the people working on the dragons were transferable to creating armor, locations, factions, new types of weapons, etc. (which I doubt), they would not have much of a context for such things.

Nah, i think the Dragons really add a uniqness to the game. Im gald that they are in, and i've always wanted some strong enemies that you fear, and are serriously hard to beat. This seems to be the case with Dragons in Skyrim.

And dont worry, i bet they have a lot of brilliant RPG futures in Skyrim anyways
