Dragon vs Dragon?

Post » Sun Jul 24, 2011 3:14 pm

As I've all ready http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1209378-something-interesting-about-ai-and-dragons/, the concept of dragons are just damned awesome. All the cool things they can do, the fact that they have so many unique abilities, and that they are both land and air memories. Whilst we no doubt have all had our ideas about the plot at large, we know there are dragons that we get to fight. But, perhaps, will the dragons be fighting each other?

I won't go into my expositing of what I think will happen in the plot, but I think it's very likely there are "good" dragons and "bad" dragons. Those who want to eat the world, those who don't. Different factions, if you will. Even if you think I'm full of it, it has been confirmed that one dragonshout is the ability to summon a dragon to fight for you. I'm not 100% positive it is like the dragons we have seen thus far, but regardless it will most likely be able to have some sort of aerial combat else they wouldn't have bothered to mention it. Thus, to my point: How would a dragon fight a dragon?

Using the Construction Set, we can set allegiances of humanoid races and even some creatures to be friendly or hostile to the player. Again, one way or the other, it is possible for a dragon to fight a dragon. When such a confrontation does take place though, will it be awkward? We've seen the techniques that dragons can employ like bombing runs, but we've seen very little of their ground tactics beyond fire-breath down towards their assailants. Is it possible that they will actually enact in different AI behaviors depending on their opponents? Obviously there are a lot of techniques available with fighting a player, but what if it attacks another beast creature like those giants? Will it even? There's a lot of guesswork here, so I guess I should have my own say on it.

Again, we really don't know what Bethesda has in store in terms of the story, but I would not put it past them to at least have one fight where two dragons try to rip out each other's throats. It might be scripted in order to alleviate work for coders, animators, etc. but I have a strong feeling that this spectacle will turn up at least once in the game. There may be a system specifically in place for these battles, thus indicating that there will be a multitude of them, but I have less hopes in full for that. I think it would be well worthwhile to have some mid-air combat animations specifically for this purpose (and melee can be handled in a straightforward way) to give us a sense of the creature's power.

If it's not in yet, it's not in, so this is about you all then. What do you think? Will Dragon vs Dragon happen? Will Dragon vs non-humanoid beast happen? Do you suppose there is a system in place to facilitate such things? Would there be a purpose?

would be pretty awesome to have a frost dragon all of a sudden lay waste to a fire dragon that has you cornered. However, i dont think it will be found randomly.

as mentioned below it might be possible with dragon shout

Well, it is confirmed that there's a shout that lets you summon a dragon, so, hypothetically...

In a sense, they will fight each other, but not randomly. There will be a dragon shout that will call a dragon to your aide.

Dragons are all on the same faction, bar maybe a few. And that will be in quests no doubt. You will not see dragons fighting randomly.

unscripted- yes, but will they fight each other? no, just as you won't (and haven't) seen two wolves fight each other, or two skeletal warriors fight each other.

But there has been 'confirmed' a dragon shout that will summon a dragon to your aide

Yes, forgot to put that. I very much doubt it will be random, probably only related to the main quest.

But, as I said, we don't know if that dragon is an exact copy of the one's we have seen so far or if it will be greatly decreased in its usage.

Exactly if you summon a dragon to your side while a draggon is attacking you i bet they're going to attack each other.
i doubt they're going to hi five each other and gang up on you.

I'm sure that they'll act, as Todd has said many times before, like any other unscripted creature. Therefore, I am of the believe that yes, they will attack each other .

Well, if that comes out to be impossible, put it in the cheat console to see pure epicness:

startcombat 'dragon code' *clicking the other dragon*

I had so much fun doing this... guards killing each other, the adoring fan trying to kill the guards, then he starts running away from them... When I did it, everyplace I go, I could see him running from the guards...

Oh well...

Well, but this won't be necessary, because some people said it's possible to summon a dragon...
DAMN, I wish I never knew that this was possible...
NOW I can't wait for the game.

We've made it clear that one can use a friendly dragon to (hopefully) fight another dragon, but what will this entail? Will it be a rather awkward exchange of bombing runs as they fly around one another? Will the summoned dragon be rooted to the ground? Will there perhaps be an arbitrary limitation so that dragons can't fight others in battle? The reason I'm dangerously curious about all this is for my mod, and I want to see if there will be the capacity for dragons to fight others. Obviously, that's all ready metaphorical (ASoIaF pun!) but it would be interesting for an army to watch the two.

I don't think so, because Todd said that some times dragons travel in groups.

People assume far too much, also not reading my post apparently. Why couldn't there be various factions of dragons, territorial dragons, alpha dragons, and whatnot? It is not out of reason to expect that, especially with so little being known at the moment about the story. Are dragons truly sentient? Well, they've developed a language, so who's to say they've not developed culture and cultural disputes? Have an open mind here!

It is already known that they are as intelligent or more so than the player races. Aside from possible rogue dragons who are against the enemy dragons we face, they are all assumed to be basically soldiers sent forth by Alduin to invade and crush any resistance.

I very much like the idea of dragons fighting each other. Then again, I like the idea of ANYTHING trying to kill something OTHER THAN ME. :P

It only makes sense though, since there's no reason for all the dragons to get along perfectly with each other. What do the Daedric creatures do in Oblivion all day? Fight, I guarantee it.

And now we have dragon summoning? Seriously?

Skyrim just earned some points...

being unscripted doesnt mean they'll randomly attack EVERYTHING they see.

they already mentioned once, i think, that dragons wont always fly straight down at you anytime you see them.

if that happened, you'd never get a break, since there are unlimited dragons.

Or it could show that Akatosh and Alduin, two personality of the same Aedra are fighting. So the dragonborn real goal would be to help one of the personality win said fight and the plot like would make you have to fight for Akatosh, so we can have more Elder Scrolls.

Belief have power and The Nords belief could be Self-Fulfilling, their belief in Alduin and the lack of faith in Akatosh do to the empire fall may made it so Alduin in control.

I am not much on Lore in this series so my idea may be wrong.

I think that Dragons might have territory disputes but nothing resulting in a deathmatch. Kinda like male organisms fight for mating rights with a female in season, the losers back off, the strongest gets his turf, and usually only minimal injuries are sustained if any. This could be the same in Skyrim except the dragons are female.

Why are so many people under the false pretense, that the dragons here are no more than animals? I'll say it again:

It is already known that they are as intelligent or more so than the player races. Aside from possible rogue dragons who are against the enemy dragons we face, they are all assumed to be basically soldiers sent forth by Alduin to invade and crush any resistance.

The Jills, Black Dragons are female, they are the ones that serve Alduin who is male. Umm, as for all the dragons being female, I would guess not, but the majority would be if the lore going around is accurate.
